The pantry was a busy place. Currently, we don’t have a partnership with this pantry. I spoke with the person in charge on site, Cheryl or Sheri. She said we would have to ask Lt. Terry Olson, the person in charge of the pantry, if we could come in for nutrition education. However, the woman I spoke with seemed very receptive to our ideas and the other initiatives we were doing at other pantries.
There is a small waiting area for clients with room for a table for nutrition education. That day, someone from Medicare was tabling and signing people up for insurance. The pantry is a walk-through grocery store style. Clients took numbers when they walked in. Presenting nutrition education while the clients wait would be the best scenario. I didn’t
The mission of the agency is to “provide for the needs of hungry people by gathering and sharing quality food with dignity, compassion, and education”. Volunteers were there to restock the shelves and bag the food for the clients. The staff duties consisted of interviewing clients and making sure the facility ran smoothly. Harvest Hope serves a diverse population residing within Lexington, West Columbia, and Cayce.
They provide food to over 46 million people in need through their network of 200 food banks. They also work diligently on raising awareness by partnering with high-profile celebrities to create effective public service announcements. Though they are doing an amazing job tackling the hunger issue and spreading knowledge regarding hunger in America, there are two areas that may require adjustments.
When residents have been allowed to participate in their diet decisions, they have been found to have increased appetites and enjoyment of food, both of which are equated with quality of life. Alternatively, strict diets have been shown to result in lower intakes leading to weight loss and undernutrition. (Dorner, Niedert, & Welch, 2002). Offering a wide variety of foods with 24/7 access to allows active participation in choosing their own diet. Eliza Jennings homes were assured resident health was not compromised as a result of person-centered care by performing regular Accu-Checks and other diagnostic checks to monitor the health of the residents (“Case Studies in Person-Directed Care”,
A community health assessment of the Hillside-Quadra area was performed and considered various aspects of the community, including the population, the socioeconomic environment, and health and social services. Personal communication with some of the residents determined that food insecurity is of major significance for many in the community. “Food insecurity exists within a household when one or more members do not have access to the variety or quantity of food they need due to lack of money” (Statistics Canada, 2015). Community kitchens (CK), are easily adapted to an IFK concept, have been implemented by two communities within Victoria (Appendix B; Personal Communication) and are capable of serving as a public health initiative that benefits the communities they serve (Iacovou et al.,
I also recently volunteered at the Cleveland Food Bank by packing lunches for under privileged children and sorting non-perishable foods for those in need. Prior to participating in volunteer services for the day, we were required to watch a video that explains the purpose of the Cleveland Food Bank and why there is a need for continuous support. The Greater Cleveland Food Bank works to ensure that everyone in our communities has the nutritious food they need every day. The mission of the Cleveland Food Bank is to alleviate hunger by providing food and support to community organizations that feed the hungry. Many people depend on the support because of their financial situation, life changes, and possible mental or physical limitations. The Food Bank acts as a storage unit and distribution facility for smaller agencies and organizations such as schools, homeless shelters, churches, and day
For instance, there have been several nutritional interventions implemented in health care facilities. Specifically, screening can be effective in health care facilities to aid in identifying poor nutrition among the elderly, which is often undetected. Additionally, screening tools has been used to establish appropriate nutritional meals. One study by researchers Babineau, Jolyne, Villalon, Laporte, Manon, & Payette (2008) showed that the introduction of screening in a general hospital raised awareness of nutrition-related care. In this intervention dietitians conducts a full nutritional assessment and implemented a nutritional care plan for patients aged 65 or older (Babineau et al., 2008). The nutrition care program included nutritional screening, timely intervention, and close dietitian
Food insecurity is an issue faced by millions of Americans every day, and the biggest group affected by this is working families with children. Food insecurity is so big that the United States government has now recognized it and provided a definition for it. The United States government has defined food insecurity as “a household level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food” (USDA.gov). Food banks and anti-hunger advocates agree that some of the causes of food insecurity are stagnant wages, increase in housing costs, unemployment, and inflation of the cost of food. These factors have caused food banks to see a change in the groups of people needing assistance. Doug O’Brien, director of public policy and research at Chicago-based Second Harvest says “’we’ve seen a real shift in who we serve. A decade ago, it was almost always homeless, single men and chronic substance abusers. Now we have children and working families at soup kitchens’” (Koch). These families that are feeling the effects of food insecurity will not be only ones affected by it, but all of America. Studies have shown that there is a link between food security, performance in the classroom, and obesity. If this issue is not faced head on, America will have a generation of children not fully prepared for the workforce and high health insurance rates due to obesity health issues.
The hope food pantry in Chicago consisted of a lot of preparation. we have to make sure we have enough food on what they thought how many people on average was going to show up. We had to bag the food.
For those students that might qualify for the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, I met with the University of Minnesota director of public health to discuss and implement a process aimed at reaching out to those students. The guidelines for applying, along with the application steps were comprised and formatted into an email. An email from the university was sent to approximately 500-1000 targeted students. The email contained a list of

Although there were different topics discussed during the seminar, most speakers touched on some common themes. Many speakers made emphasis on the importance of communication, how to find a life balance, how to choose priorities in life, the importance of practicing the golden rule and of standing for what one believes, and how to adjust to changes in life. The topic that stood out to me the most was about the importance of standing for what we believe. As Brett Biggs, Vice President and CFO of Wal-Mart said, it is essential that we find a Company that values what we value. I personally feel like when we get a job offer, we feel like we must do anything to get a job. We may even feel like the company is doing us a favor by hiring us. Yet, getting a job is essential, we should also see ourselves as an asset for the company, set our own standards, and
I think it is important to educate the population on their disease state and so that they know the importance of taking their medication as prescribed. I also found that a large percentage of the people that did come to the event have a primary care physician that they go to regularly. I noticed that a lot of the people said that they wanted to come to the screening to get results before they go to the doctor and they would talk to the doctor about the results they received from the screenings provided by Duquesne University. As before going to the event, I said that the population that was going to be served would be uninsured, underinsured, or people wanting to stay healthy. To me it seemed like a majority of the clients were ones that wanted to learn more about how their health status and how they can work to stay health. I could tell that some of the people there monitor their blood glucose and blood pressure regularly because some where telling me that they don’t understand why their blood pressure was so high, and that they measure it every morning at home and it is never that high. At times I felt that the clients did not trust us with the results they were given. A lot of the people that I talked to at the event look forward to coming to the event every year, one day said she drove 2 hours from West Virginia just to come to the event to
The health care changes for the better of the patients and how to make it better. As a Nutrition Counselor, is to help client with reimbursements, insurance claims (denied or approved) may pay the partial for the care. Helping the client to understand the health care rights and client rights until further notice if there is any change. Many client believe that the health care just more expensive as the years goes by because middle class and lower class are struggle with the health care due to error in documentation, reimbursement, and insurance. I know that some client have these errors before and when they are referred to a nutrition counselor, some document says something, but it’s not the clients’ information, can become a big

My field practicum at the University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center Nutrition Support Shared Resource would be a great experience for other students interested in public health, epidemiology, cancer prevention, and population dietary assessment. It would not be as relevant to students interested in clinical dietetics or food service because clients, patients, or customers are not interacted with and no food is served.
