At the Bridge to Wellness Expo, I was participating in cholesterol and glucose screenings. In order for the cholesterol screening to run properly, I needed to collect a small blood sample from the clients. I had a hard time getting enough blood for the machines to work because the weather that morning was cold making the clients hands cold and difficult for the blood to be drawn from a finger prick. The first person I was doing screenings for actually made a scene at the expo because I could not get enough blood from the prick. I tried a different finger and still no results, he then preceded to blame me for not knowing how to do the screenings correctly. I then went and got a pharmacist that also tried to drawn blood on two separate occasions, …show more content…
I think it is important to educate the population on their disease state and so that they know the importance of taking their medication as prescribed. I also found that a large percentage of the people that did come to the event have a primary care physician that they go to regularly. I noticed that a lot of the people said that they wanted to come to the screening to get results before they go to the doctor and they would talk to the doctor about the results they received from the screenings provided by Duquesne University. As before going to the event, I said that the population that was going to be served would be uninsured, underinsured, or people wanting to stay healthy. To me it seemed like a majority of the clients were ones that wanted to learn more about how their health status and how they can work to stay health. I could tell that some of the people there monitor their blood glucose and blood pressure regularly because some where telling me that they don’t understand why their blood pressure was so high, and that they measure it every morning at home and it is never that high. At times I felt that the clients did not trust us with the results they were given. A lot of the people that I talked to at the event look forward to coming to the event every year, one day said she drove 2 hours from West Virginia just to come to the event to
When we see patients, we must remember that we are not simply treating a disease. We are caring for people with lives, hobbies, jobs, families, and friends, who are likely in a very vulnerable position. We must ensure that we use the status of physicians to benefit patients first and foremost, and do what we promised to when we entered the profession: provide care and improve quality of life, and hopefully leave the world a little better than it was
It was intimidating and a bit scary, but instinctively I tried to help the patient and his family in any manner I could. As the day progressed, I had less anxiety when administering medications to the patient, and I felt more at ease with checking on the patient and his family to ensure they had no unmet needs. Because of our initial encounter with the doorway assessment, providing patient care was not as frightening as past first days of clinical have been. This resulted in a quite interesting post clinical conference where every student had something interesting to discuss regarding the patients they cared
For my Brown Bag Assignment my participant, JR, was found within my family. I was aware JR took daily medications due to his recent heart bypass surgery in June 2015 and met with him. JR is 62 years old and takes seven medication daily. My participant, JR had heart bypass surgery, exactly 4 bypasses, on June 1, 2015, due to 90% of his coronary arteries being blocked. For about two weeks prior to the surgery, he could not walk, felt very dizzy, fatigue, and weak. His legs even gave out and he fainted. He then decided to go to the doctors, got lab work done and found out about his coronary arteries were blocked. If he did not have this surgery, he would have died. This eight-hour surgery was a huge reality check for him. After this surgery, he completely changed his lifestyle by not smoking, not drinking, eating healthy and going on walks. Prior to this surgery, JR had and still has type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol for about five years now. As I was talking to him, it was clear that he knew all his medication very adequately especially when to take it, why he takes it and how to take it. He is also fully aware of healthy lifestyle choices. As we were talking I gave some advice to help continue his healthy lifestyle.
Ask each person what they learned about themselves and how it will help them communicate with patients and improve quality care.
The Healthy Body Wellness Center requires an Information Security Management System (ISMS), in order to implement a plan to maintain and audit the company 's information system security objectives. This necessitated outlining the scope of the ISMS plan as well as an evaluation of the risk assessment conducted by We Test Everything LLC (WTE). We Test Everything LLC was contracted by the Healthy Body Wellness Center 's (HBWC) Office of Grants Giveaway (OGG) to provide a risk assessment of the Small Hospital Grant Tracking System (SHGTS).
208). This in turn will allow me to identify populations of interest and those which are at risk for health issues. In addition, providing education to my patients and the community about available resources, will help prevent illnesses, and promote wellness. Lastly, by using the 17 public health interventions, I will be able to use a variety of interventions to help improve the quality of care I provide to my patients (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014, pp.
The conclusion of the study in the article is that “health care providers should work together to address gaps” in care. One of the factors utilized in the article is whether or not the patient had met with a diabetic educator, dietitian, or nurse in the past 12 months. I could use this assessment piece doing chart reviews and as part of my goals to make sure each patient with an elevated A1C is offered health coaching and diabetes education at least every 6-12
If you really think about the situation from all aspects it would be really damaging to make a careless choice with others medical information. The most appropriate choice would be to alert the proper people to make sure the patients were aware of their need to return to the office for another blood draw and allow the testing be done knowing the proper person is being considered. A person who values their job and wants to portray good character would clearly know without a doubt that the right choice would be to go with your gut instinct and do the right thing. I am sure this type of problem arises often and it definitely makes me think twice about my own medical concerns and hope that the people handling my tests are doing so carefully!
When I met my patient for this service project, I was unsure of how I should introduce myself and how I would explain my role relative to their care. My community health worker, Sherron, took all the pressure away from the situation; she had already established a relationship with my patient and I felt more like an invited member into a health care team rather than a new face with something to prove. Sherron had already taken steps to help my patient and I was an added benefit with pharmaceutical knowledge. I spent most of my time reviewing disease states and answering questions about drug therapy. My first interaction with the patient was the first primary care visit; I spent my time extracting medical information from the patient alongside the new physician. This first interaction lasted over an hour, there is no way the patient retained all the details discussed, however Sherron was keeping contact with the physician and was given copies of the patient’s medical record. Sherron kept in constant contact with the patient and was truly the best resource for information besides the patient
Population health management is the organization of health care delivered across a population with an aim to improve quality of care while managing cost (McAlearney, 2003). The intent of population health management is to improve the health by addressing a broad range of factors that impact well-being on a population-level, such as environment, social structure, and resource distribution (Kindig & Stoddart, 2003). A significant step in achieving success is by reducing inequities in health among the defined population group (Kindig & Stoddart, 2003). Population health programs include the ability to assess the health needs of a specific population, implement and evaluate interventions to improve the health of that population, and provide care for individual patients in the context of the culture, health status, and health needs of the populations of which they are a member (Association of American Medical Colleges, 1999).
It makes her a good doctor to want to improve the health of everyone, and she compares her motivation to impact women’s health to the advancement of pediatrics. The anatomy and physiology based on gender and age of humans is simply different, and that’s an indisputable fact, we just can’t treat everyone the same. She also uses small anecdotes of humor to keep the speech from becoming too stale or uncomfortable. I really enjoyed the overall impact of her speech, it really moved me, and it made me want to support her cause. The only visual aids that were present during her speech was a projector that displayed and organized each topic addressed, and a fake fire burning. I liked both, the projector being practical and helpful, and the fake fire symbolizing empowerment. It was simple, direct, and
Health 391 course- Principles of Community Health focused on principals of community health and my class of about twenty junior level students was in charge of planning, facilitating, and evaluating a health fair. We separated into different committees and each committee had specific responsibilities. My committee was in charge of the making the flyers and getting things together. Within my committee, we called community members, created and disseminated surveys, and used previous data on the community to identify community needs for health promotion and disease prevention. We researched the community to better understand the demographic details and what resources were available in the communi...
Wellness is defined as “an active life-long process of becoming aware of and making choices to achieve optimal health and a more successful and balanced existence” (Ren et al., 2007). Wellness incorporates the spiritual, emotional and social wellbeing of an individual. When it came to thinking, planning and developing my SMART goal I decided to focus on my physical health as this was an area that I needed to improve the most and would also contribute positively to my spiritual, emotional, social, intellectual and environmental wellbeing aswell. In this reflective essay I will discuss and reflect on this journey. This reflection will include why I decided to focus on this specific SMART goal aswell as how I found the SMART goal journey. I will then discuss my own view on my attitudes for health and wellness and will discuss what a SMART goal is and the importance of them in order to start working towards those goals and to positively change behaviours and habits. This reflection will also include challenges that may be experienced in relation to behaviour change. These may include time management and motivation.
Educating the public to recognize the signs and dangers of myocardial infarctions could lead to earlier interventions and prevent life endangering delays. Furthermore, the ability to afford medical procedures is a huge barrier for many of the patients. As a result, life threatening delays often occurred because of considerations for the cost of the procedures. It became clear that meeting the health needs of the public took more than education; it would also take an interdisciplinary effort to eliminate health inequities resulting from disparities in income, social status, education, employment, social and physical work environments. However, all I had were raw ideas. It was clear to me that I would need the formalization of a public health education to obtain the skills needed to actualize my
