During our lifetime, we encounter several obstacles and challenges, some make us stronger, while the others push us down. However, we tend to forget that the cycle of human life is filled with ups and downs. Thus, we should realize that where there is joy, there is the pain waiting to happen. Although pain and suffering are an inevitable part of our lives, we can learn and take a valuable lesson from each incident. These adverse situations help us to grow and expand our wisdom. In the fourth part of the book, His Holiness, The Dalai Lama highlights the key steps that an individual should follow to transform their negative behaviors into positive ones. In the Dalai Lama’s opinion, the crucial step to overcoming negative behaviors and making positive changes in our lives is to develop a sense of “conviction, determination, and action” (Cutler 220). The Dalai Lama believes that to become a better person, an individual must develop conviction of the need to change to increase his commitment. Additionally, Hugh Prather also believes the same as he notes “unless I accept my faults, I will most certainly doubt my …show more content…
Acceptance is the key to converting our flaws into positive attributes. In my first semester, I believed that college was just like high school. I thought that I could just study for a test the night before and end up making an A on the test. Thus, I skipped classes and overslept on a regular basis. Consequently, I was unable to perform well during the first semester. However, this major incident helped me develop a sense of conviction that college is nothing like high school and I recognized that I must work hard and limit the hours I sleep daily. Thereby, this incident assisted me in developing a firm conviction about the adverse effects of skipping classes and
Adversities are often given a negative connotation and view, as most consider them to be hurdles which impede progress. Nevertheless when taken in and accepted under a positive light, adversities can serve as stepping stones through which an individual can better their character. In the face of looming obstacles individuals who persevere come out of the situation as stronger, determined, and more hopeful for the future.
In Dalai Lama’s piece, “The Ethic of Compassion”, he argues compassion is the key to life and happiness. Lama explains the meaning of compassion and ways to achieve it. Throughout his piece he rebuttals several different counter arguments. Lama is able to argue compassion is a responsibility to all, not just those we are close to and explains why it should be used in our professional and personal lives.
When I first came to college, I did not have a solid idea of what the experience would be like, but I was excited for this new chapter in my life. I enrolled in courses I though I would excel in but a couple of weeks into the quarter, I felt unprepared for the fast-paced courses that I seemed to be struggling in but that my peers seem to of been excelling in. Early on this cause me some hardships suddenly I did not feel that I was as smart or accomplished as they were. As a result of this my grades in my courses suffered early on. As time progressed, I became friends with a group of people who were also in my similar situation, they were first-generation college students, students, this great support network of students allowed me to gain more confidence in my academic ability and with the help of my lab work, I began to see that I could excel in college.
Many of us have often wondered if we have a moral obligation to help others we don’t know. The term moral obligation has multiple meanings but it is often referred as a belief that an act is one prescribed by a person’s principle and set of values. In the reading “The Ethic of Compassion” by the Dalai Lama, the author’s argument is about the importance of cultivating not only love but, also compassion. It is said that in terms of empathy we are able to share others suffering. This is something that just occurs naturally from our own instincts. When we enhance our sensitivity towards others it is believed that we can extend our compassion to the point where an individual feels responsibility towards other people. This causes the person to help
Throughout human history one has seen horrible atrocities and insightful tragedies, one has seen determined, figures of hope and brutal ends. Somehow, mankind has continuously found a way to mess up time and time again, to slaughter its own kind, to discriminate against a slight difference, to determine one's life without repercussions. Yet, despite all these unjust mistakes humanity has evoked, in the roughest of times humanity has always banded together to eradicate the wrong. With time there is prevailance, a joined society, forgiving the death and injustice that once torn it apart. We accept and learn from the mistakes of the past in order to move forward. This concept brings me to the theme that one’s ambition and ability to endure pain,
Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college.
Going through life means experiencing great happiness but also great loss. Every loss we face may hurt and cause us grief, but we must let life take its course and endure the pain, for we cannot know true happiness without knowing true sorrow. Kahlil Gibran’s “The Prophet” discusses the hardships that come with pain and loss and gives insight about how a person can overcome that pain. Even the pain might hurt a great deal right now, the wound will only heal if we allow ourselves to feel that pain. As famous poet Lao Tsu once said, “Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”
“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” (Keller) College is definitely a challenge, but it is also a very beautiful thing. Many students enter college expecting knowledge and a sense of direction. It may be hard to balance school between work, you’re social life, life at home, personal issues, etc. A few challenges that I know about all too well have to deal with money, transportation, and procrastination. You spend all of high school listening to your teachers and parents preparing you for what is to come in the near future. The truth is that there is only one way of truly learning, from experience.
Dalai Lama, in The Four Noble Truths states that anyone who can perceive the inter independent nature of reality can see the Dharma, and by seeing the Dharma one can see the Buddha. He strongly believes that anyone who approaches such assertion from the perspective of Nagarjuna's teachings can accomplish the deepest understanding of its inference. With such approach of the Nagarjuna, one can then discover the three levels of purpose.
The Dalai Lama defines compassion as having much empathy for others’ till we can start to share each others’ own suffering. Empathy should be presented towards all beings including our enemies; that is the most effortless and purest form of compassion. The Dalai Lama would argue that when it comes to the use of compassion in our professional life is somewhat crucial or else “our activities are in danger of becoming destructive.” (Dalai Lama, pg. 64). This meaning that we wouldn’t consider the things we do or the decisions we make and how that might affect others’. The ideal of compassion can be applied to the professional life in many ways, such as leadership, relationships, job fulfillment and performance.
After only being at The University of Akron for three weeks, I dropped two classes. Shortly after dropping those classes, I received an email from my advisor asking to schedule an appointment. While in my academic advisors office, she proceeded to tell me that most students who drop two or more classes tend to not graduate. These words frightened me and even made me regret the decision to attend college as a whole. I sat there and thought about how disappointed my family would be and wondered if I would be successful in college. Since then, I have learned that there is a lot more to being successful
In conclusion, There are many things you will need to change and learn about yourself to be a success in college and taking accountability for all that happens while in college, will teach you growth and maturity. Relying on these positive techniques will allow you to accomplish not only being a great student but giving you the tools and exposure to be the best employee after obtaining your dream degree. I believe that most students may be successful in college and that the measure of handwork, devotion, and dedication are the features that divides the students who are effective from the students who are not. We may not all be effective at everything, yet don't work against yourself and at any rate try it out.
Concept of Suffering Both religions opinions on suffering are quite opposing; they are different in conceptual view as well as them not both coinciding in the realism of suffering. In Christianity it is put forth that mankind was first introduced to suffering when they rejected god. Christians also believe that if a person rejects the presence of god, then they will be effected with temporary suffering while still on earth, and then experience eternal suffering while in hell; since suffering in the afterlife is the outcome if you sin during life, and disobey god. The Christian god should be never disobeyed since he is the one that sacrificed him, for them. Man is too weak to free himself from sin by his own strength.
The type of attitude we partake can have a huge effect on how we handle daunting times. A negative attitude can prevent one from overcoming fear...
People don't truly accept life for what it is until they've actually tasted adversity and went through those misfortunes and suffering. We are put through many hardships in life, and we learn to understand and deal with those issues along the way. We find that life isn't just about finding one's self, but about creating and learning from our experiences and background. Adversity shapes what we are and who we become as individuals. Yann Martel's Life of Pi shows us that adverse situations help shape a person's identity and play a significant role in one's lief by determining one's capabilities and potential, shaping one's beliefs and values, and defining the importance and meaning of one's self.
