In Dalai Lama’s piece, “The Ethic of Compassion”, he argues compassion is the key to life and happiness. Lama explains the meaning of compassion and ways to achieve it. Throughout his piece he rebuttals several different counter arguments. Lama is able to argue compassion is a responsibility to all, not just those we are close to and explains why it should be used in our professional and personal lives.
Lama starts his chapter with his meaning of compassion. He shares that most “understand it mainly in the terms of empathy- our ability to enter into and, to some extent, share others’ suffering.” (Lama, 538). He describes compassion to be somewhat natural for humans but, must be continuously worked on in order to reach “great compassion” which “causes the one who is compassionate to dedicate themselves entirely to helping others overcome both their suffering and the causes of their suffering.” ( Lama, 538). reaching “great compassion” is not a practical goal and it should be used more as an inspiration. Not only is “great compassion” used as an inspiration, but also a reminder against selfishness and not to “neglect our responsibilities toward those outside our circle.” (Lama, 539).
Our responsibility towards others means our kindness should not only be for family and friends but should be shown to anyone we meet. Compassion is meant to be equal, “if people only deserve compassion based on their actions, then we can hardly expect ourselves or others to feel it toward all human beings. Extending it to everyone would require a shift in focus from action to something shared and underlying.” (LaTour, 10). Relationships based on attraction are unstable because “someone we consider a dear friend one day can become our sworn enemy the next.” (Lama, 539). In order to distribute compassion equally, it is best to not depend it on the circumstances of each person, such as if a person is wealthy or poor. “We forget that just like us, whether fortunate or unfortunate, distant or near, they desire to be happy and not to suffer.” (Lama,
540). Compassion should not be used for just special circumstances; it should be incorporated into our everyday lives. Although many people think there is no place for compassion at work, “Lack of caring exhausts human beings and results in diminished productivity as well as loss of soul.” (Walsh, 66). Lama explains, “because when we ignore the question of the impact our actions have on others’ well-being, inevitably we end up hurting them.” (Lama, 341).
The definition of compassion: sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. As this definition shows compassion shows concern for other that every person would love to have. In The Chosen written by Chaim Potok, Mr. Potok really presents compassion in his book. Not only does he display compassion in one of his character but in every single one he gives them compassion that is expressed in different ways. He goes into detail example of compassion with each of his characters and really emphasizes the true meaning of compassion.
On 1/13/16, I watched the TED Talk of Gregory Boyle, “Compassion and Kinship,” a founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries. He explained how we should form a relationship with others so that we can come together as one rather than being enemies towards each other. Specifically he claimed that having kinship and compassion breaks down barriers it allows people who don’t fit society’s standards know that their life has value, meaning, and worth. As he said, “How can we achieve a certain kind of compassion that stands in awe at what the poor have to carry rather than stand in judgement at how they carry it, for the measure of our compassion lies not in our service of those on the margins but in our willingness to see ourselves and kinship with them and mutuality.” Although some people believe that once they choose to make bad decisions, they have

In our world, I see many people that lack the ability to show compassion. They can be so selfish when they should be more selfless. In the story On Compassion, the author, Ascher, explains how no one is born with compassion and must be taught it. A homeless, black man was staring at a women’s baby in the stroller and she offered him a dollar. At first he was hesitant to take it, but eventually did. Later another man walks into an overpriced coffee shop in which the store owner handed him a bag with food. Ascher makes the readers question whether these were acts of fear, pity, or just simply out of the good of heart.

In Barry H. Corey’s book, Love Kindness, the underestimated, devalued virtue of kindness is explored. Kindness is a powerful, gentle strength that is often underestimated and devalued. Living a life of kindness is not for the meek or the prideful for this is a humbling, bold, and whimsical way of being. Love and kindness are difficult to separate because kindness is a result of love in its most authentic state. Love and kindness are the keys to moments of vulnerability.
