Folke Tersman claimed that" In any narrative, the advocacy of a certain point of view is usually accompanied by a degree of oversimplification.” (Ethics', in Routledge Companion to Philosophy and Film, 2009, p. 119). The key word of this sentence would be the word oversimplification. “Over” refers to something used too much in most of the cases, which is a negative meaning usually. In other words, Tersman suggested that if people are going to make a statement on a moral issue, P, by using narrative, there would be a risk of making P too simple to justify its complexity. In the movie, The Road (2009), we could understand the gangsters are written as bad guys in the story against the main characters just when they came out. But, in reality, people could not be identify such easily in most of the cases. Also, when the audiences heard that the gangster would eat people, they would immediately feel digusted and have an image that they are absolutely terrible guys who are dangerous. Yet there might be many external factors we do not know of this action, just like people would be eaten because of special culture or famine in reality. Also, the story would be arranged “coincidentally” to highlight the major conflict and expression of idea. In The Road, the gangster just returned to their base after the father and his son escaped form the basement, and the people came out from the basement to disturb the gangsters just before the father wanted to kill his son. So, it is obvious that the time of different events in the film are arragned cleverly, which in order to show the characters’ wants and actions. But, in reality, things do not happen such coincidentally in many cases. We might have to spend more time to figure out the same information by more effort with more details. That is, compared to reality, narrative are much more simple and direct for us to receive the information from the elements arranged by the creators for the purpose of advocating their point of view, including simpfiying characters’ orientation, culture background setting, and story. Glory Road is a 2006 sports film directed by James Gartner starring Josh Lucas and Derek Luke. The film portrays the story of how Don Haskins had the first all black starting lineup in the NCAA and led Texas Western to a national championship. Along the way, the players and Coach Haskins face great adversity throughout the season because of their all black starting lineup. As the season progresses, the threats continuously grow worse and eventually are directed towards the family of Coach Haskins. This problem continues to grow due to the fact that Texas Western’s team gains national recognition not only for being the first with an all black starting lineup, but for making i through the regular season with only a single loss As the movie progress the audience sees one of the players get beaten because of his race. Another scene shows a hotel room that has been completely trashed because it was where the black athletes were staying. I will prove that that this scene where the hotel room is trashed is racist towards the black athletes.
This type of "narrative" writing gives believability to the people, and a sense of realism to the story.
There are four main modes of discourse: expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive. In Mary Rowlandson’s A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, it is apparent in the title that it is a narrative. Like Mrs. Rowlandson’s literature, Olaudah Equiano’s From Africa to America is a narrative. A narrative form of literature is a story, account of events, or experiences, whether it is true or fictitious. In this case their stories were their real experiences and they gave the reader actual facts and information, also making it expository. "The closeness of the place and the heat of the climate, added to the number in the ship, which was so crowded that each had scarcely room to turn himself, almost suffocated us." (73) This is a perfect example showing that Olaudah Equiano’s narrative is also descriptive, giving the reader vivid images in his mind, whereas Rowlandson’s narrative rarely has descriptive content. Stories are the way humans share, create, and explore their many experiences and identities with each other. When a story is told, the original content lingers depending upon how the storyteller recalls the content. Once the story is retold, it often takes on different details and meanings, because each storyteller adds their own perspective, experience, and meaning. The story then begins to have its own life. Each storyteller has a connection to the beginning and the end of the story.
When one thinks of a gangster they may think of speakeasies and classy cars or maybe drive-bys, but they will always imagine a man who is not afraid to get his hands dirty to grasp for a higher place on the social ladder. They will think of a man portrayed in a genre of cinema more American than any other, the gangster film. This genre began in the early thirties and has been re-adapted each decade to fit a new time. Although gangster films may mold themselves to fit into a certain cultural era, they still stay deeply tied to the foundations of the genre and its historical relevance to the american dream. This is apparent when comparing the differences and similarities between The Public Enemy and American Gangster. To better understand this comparison one needs to understand the origination of some of the classic conventions of the gangster film genre.

Stories let us see and even feel the world in different prespectives, and this is becuase of the writter or story teller. We learn, survive and entertain our selves using past experiences, which are in present shared as stories. This is why Roger Rosenblatt said, "We are a narrative species."

For instance, narrating the text of a story allows the audience to connect with the feelings of the narrator. A description incorporates visuals so that the audience can recognize the image being portrayed. “Shooting an Elephant” and “The Lottery” are both descriptive narratives. Descriptive narratives give the reader a clearer understanding of the passage. “Shooting an Elephant” is the stronger descriptive narrative because of vivid sensory detail, manipulating the perception of the reader, and Orwell’s use of conflict.
They wear fancy suits, drive luxurious cars, and parade around with different women each day. Although being a gangster has some advantages, everything comes with a price. Tom and Matt were such successful gangsters that they attracted enemies from other gangs. The audience watches as Tom and Matt walk down the street, and suddenly gunshots are heard, Matt has been shot and killed. The audience may have assumed all the violence and tragedy would end there but the death of Tom only sparked a bloody mob war. This film was one of the first films of its time to show a mob war which were very common during the 1920s. Competition was one of the biggest parts of being a gangster. Al Pacino who played a famous gangster in the movie The Godfather says in the film, “Everybody loves you until you become competition.” Gangsters were perceived as powerful men who were above the law and who could handle anything, but that is not always the case, especially for Tom. In the end of the film, Tom reign as a gangster comes to an end. He wanted to get revenge for his friend Matt, but it only resulted in his death as well. "The role of the narrator influences the type of relationship we have not only with him or her but also with the story" (Landy 75). This quote was taken from our Literary Studies book in which we have read several stories concerning different styles of narration. Narration is one of the most important components of a story. The characters, plot, setting, and theme are also significant, however the narrator sets the mood and also the pace of the story. Two good examples of narration is the short tale The Zebra Storyteller by Spencer Holst and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. These are stories in which the narrators retain certain styles of narration. An outside book that we have not read is the fairy tale Cinderella. In these three works, the narrators have specific functions or duties to carry throughout the story.
The narratives is a necessary component. The narratives lead the audience to think about the event that the speaker talked about. Expression of values and goals is the main aim of narratives. (Hampton, 2004) stated that stories provide frames for understanding experiences, explaining and solving problems, and giving emphasis to moral value.
