It is possible to overcome traumatic events in our lives, however it will take time and effort in order to cope with the situation and learn how to talk to others properly, work well with others, as well as, have a relationship with friends and family. Attending counseling or a therapist is a excellent idea when having a troublesome time. Interacting with other people who have experienced similar situations can help you understand yours better. Try to talk to someone about your problem or it will change you. In order to overcome traumatic events and other situations, a person may visit with a counselor or therapist so they may be able to communicate with other people about the situation so they can change their lifestyle and attitude for the better. You can recover from an emotional experience and it shapes you and influences who you become in your life for the better, however this can not be done on your own. Trauma is an incident that leads to a great suffering of body or mind. It is a severe torture to the body and breaks the body’s natural equilibrium. It is defined as an emotional wound causing a psychological injury. American Psychological Association, defined trauma as an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, rape or natural disaster. Immediately after the event, shock and denial are typical. Longer term reactions include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks and strained relationships. J. Laplanche and J. B. Pontalis assert, “Trauma is an event in the subject life defined by its intensity by the subject’s incapacity to respond adequately to it, and by the upheaval and long lasting effects that it brings about in the psychical organization” (qtd. by Hwangbo 1).
“Trauma is used when describing emotionally painful and distressing experiences or situations that can overwhelm a person’s ability to cope” (John A. Rich, Theodore Corbin, & Sandra Bloom, 2008). Trauma could include deaths, violence, verbal and nonverbal words and actions, discrimination, racism etc. Trauma could result in serious long-term effects on a person’s health, mental stability, and physical body. Judith Herman, from Trauma and Recovery, said “Traumatic events are extraordinary, not because they occur rarely, but rather because they overwhelm the ordinary human adaptations to life” (John A. Rich, Theodore Corbin, & Sandra Bloom, 2008). Trauma does not involve the same experiences for everyone; each individual is unique in that they, and only they, can decide what is traumatic for them.
From research through SAHMSA and increased knowledge through my choice in graduate-level courses, I learned how to best integrate a trauma-informed approach into my clinical practice. This example from my concentration practice shows how I sought to choose interventions from an evidence-based practice perspective, seeking to meet my clients and support their dignity and worthwhile also using approaches and interventions which have been shown effective through research. Although a trauma-informed perspective would have been beneficial in my foundation internship, it became imperative in my concentration internship and I increased my competency and supported the dignity and worth of my clients by choosing to learn about and integrate a trauma-informed approach in my clinical practice.
PTSD is a debilitating mental illness that occurs when someone is exposed to a traumatic, dangerous, frightening, or a possibly life-threating occurrence. “It is an anxiety disorder that can interfere with your relationships, your work, and your social life.” (Muscari, pp. 3-7) Trauma affects everyone in different ways. Everyone feels wide ranges of emotions after going through or witnessing a traumatic event, fear, sadness and depression, it can cause changes in your everyday life as in your sleep and eating patterns. Some people experience reoccurring thoughts and nightmares about the event.
Greeson et al. (2010) found complex trauma to be a significant predictor on tests for internalizing problems, for PTSD, and for having at least one clinical diagnosis. They recommend a “trauma-informed perspective, because of the negative effects of trauma on an already negatively-affected population” This means catering treatment, considering the client’s experiences and seeking out evidence based approaches to trauma-based treatments.
The weight of constantly listening to difficult, harrowing, and upsetting events in other people’s lives can have negative impacts on therapists, especially for those who are inadequately trained or who have poor coping mechanisms. While most therapists deal with this strain, it is particularly true of those who work consistently work with patients who have experienced trauma. With my past social work experience I understand that trauma can affect many people in different ways. Traumatic life experiences can vary with everyone and their way of coping and reacting. I worked a children services for about two years. I have been able to witness the effects of trauma on a lot of the children I worked with. For example, I had to remove 5 children from their mother. Their mother was using meth at the time leaving the oldest child, who was thirteen years old, taking care of the youngest. The mother was in an abusive relationship with their father. The father was very emotionally abusing by threatening the kids and mother. Removing the children from their mother was a traumatic life experience.

Safety and Stabilization The effects of trauma reverberate through time and across a wide spectrum of life activities. Depending on the circumstances, these effects result in debilitating behaviors meant to alleviate anxiety that are often less than healthy and less than useful to that purpose. They may withdraw from life, use alcohol or drugs, or develop personality habits that are self-defeating. They may actually continue to place themselves in situations that are chaotic and anxiety provoking because they lack the skills and emotional stability to make better choices.
