Hope Something Is Over The Rainbow The effect that music has on an individual is astonishing. Words all of a sudden have meaning and purpose in one’s life, creating this new sense of reality that manifested out of the thin air. With the words, sounds that when it kisses one’s ears a sense of comfort and calmness surges through their body. The incredible simplicity of a note paired with a lyric soon becomes something that buzzes through one’s mind constantly, periodically, and repeatedly. The application of rhythm, rhyme, simile, imagery, metaphor, tempo, etc. to create a song is beautiful. “Over The Rainbow” influenced and gave “hope” for the soldiers that the war would only be brief and they will be reunited with their loved ones in the near future. It is this “hope” that “Over the Rainbow” brought forth that ignited the popularity of the song as it applied to the many families that were affected by the war. “Over the rainbow” empowered the whole nation to come together and hope for the best as the children of tomorrow were fighting for the country they loved.
But when the war ended, why was “Over the Rainbow” still popular? The many interpretations differed from each person’s perspective and how he or she viewed or applied the song in their life and give it the song its own meaning. In today’s world, the song by Arlen and Harburg may not signify just “hope” anymore, but it may signify luck, new beginning, or even faith. “Over The Rainbow” can be interpreted in so many ways that, it is unlike its many other successors; it’s not a song that demands attention. Its lyrics are sincere and heartfelt to be drowned out by the new music that is produced in modern music (Levin). Perhaps it is the emphasis on the substance of the lyrics,
