Orthodontics has been a special interest of mine for a long time, and the significant decision to apply to an orthodontic residency is one that I have put considerable thought into. The initial event that sparked my interest in orthodontics was undergoing my own orthodontic treatment. Growing up, I was shy and very self-conscious, particularly about my teeth. After undergoing three years of orthodontic treatment, my self-confidence blossomed, leading me to flourish in school and extracurricular activities. I truly believe my orthodontic treatment had a huge impact on molding me into the person I am today.
In dental school, I had my first didactic course and lab sessions in orthodontics, and I began to understand the mechanics behind orthodontic treatment. Listening to instructors’ narratives about their clinical experiences and seeing the transformations of their patients furthered my interest in exploring this field. I soon began shadowing in the orthodontic department, where residents and

Here, I have had the opportunity to utilize all aspects of dentistry to treat patients for routine and emergency care, including providing limited orthodontic treatment to correct minor crowding or spacing under the direction of orthodontist Dr. P.Over the course of the year, it was these patients that had the greatest impact on me personally. Each patient was eager and motivated during the course of treatment, and I found that I became very excited to document their progress with them at recall visits. While only one of my patients completed orthodontic treatment during my year of residency, debonding her brackets and seeing the joy on her face was one of the most rewarding experiences of my dental career. This residency has allowed me to further explore the vast world of dentistry, solidifying my dedication to the field of orthodontics and improving my ability to treat
We have all had those dentist or orthodontist appointments that were a complete nightmare. Getting poked, jabbed, and pinched in the mouth. Well, I have been thinking since I have had this experience and wouldn’t want anyone else to go through that. Maybe I could become an orthodontist and ensure to my patients that these problems do not happen. I enjoy helping people that I don’t know and being as precise as I need to be, to be an orthodontist. Though I have never had any experience at all with any of this, that is what school is for. I realize that being an orthodontist is the best career choice for me.
Some people tend to believe that a dentist is all about pulling teeth, filling gaps, and drilling holes in a mouth. That may be true, but this is more about the person that treats a patient prior to a dentist drilling into a mouth. Dental Hygienists provide more than just the basic examination. They also give advice on how to properly brush and floss, the types of foods to avoid, and give examples of what teeth could look like if not taken care of correctly. A dental hygienist provides preventive, therapeutic, restorative and educational interventions to promote optimal oral health.
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry which involves the prevention and correction of irregularities in the teeth. The ones who practice orthodontics and specialize the field are called orthodontists. An orthodontist has specialized and in depth knowledge about the human teeth and jaws. Providing treatment for people who have problems associated with their teeth and jaws has been their goal. The treatment provided will be varied from person to person depending on their ailment. The orthodontists make sure that our teeth and jaws are in good condition.
Orthodontic treatment has aided me in several ways. It helped keep my teeth looking perfect and straight. It aided me with self-discipline, and it made me a more responsible person. My mood also changed drastically, putting me in a better mood every time I smile. Most importantly, orthodontic treatment has taught me to be who I am today.
To get an overview of other specialties I shadowed an implant specialist and an endodontist, where the dentist’s team working skills and the essential role of dental nurses became emphasised, in order to streamline the increasingly complex
Dentistry as a profession over the years has evolved rapidly in light of new scientific evidence. Rapidly evolving science and technology have implemented changes within dentistry as evidenced by new standards and guidelines being produced by nationally recognised associations including National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP) and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) in Scotland, in provision of new scientific evidence. The latest standards and guidelines produced, endorse everyday clinical practice through evidence based dentistry (REF). All dental professionals as part of continued professional development are expected to keep to date on relevant guidelines and knowledge related to their practice (REF). This is supported by the General Dental Council who state all clinicians must maintain their professional knowledge and competence throughout their working career (REF).
I chose the career I'm focusing on because going to the dentist or orthodontist and getting my teeth cleaned, whitened, or worked on has always been something I looked forward to. Having straight, white, "perfect" teeth is something that I've always wished to have. As I slowly lost teeth to the time they all grew back in my parents as well as I knew that I was going to need braces. So I personally know how it feels to have teeth so messed up that you are embarrassed to talk or smile because there is always a chance someone will say something about it, and that is why I chose to peruse a career in orthodontistry. My best sources were "occupational employment statistics" at bls.gov and "orthodontist careers" at learningpath.com. I was surprised
Healthcare is a necessity to sustain society. Dentistry is an area of healthcare that I feel extremely passionate about because access to proper dental care is limited, especially in the underserved communities. As an African American, I want to become a dentist and healthcare provider in the hopes of helping patients and adding to the diversification of the field. With a growing minority population in the United States, it has become apparent that there is a shortage of black dentists. This is problematic because underrepresented minorities are in great need of access to culturally connected dentists who understand their clinical needs as much as their lives and their challenges. I believe that when the profession includes a range of ethnicities
During my high school days, I had an opportunity to visit the dental office frequently accompanying my mother. Her appreciation for the dentist and impressive outcomes inadvertently augmented my interest in dentistry, resulting in the decision to pursue
Dentistry is a fascinating profession for its approach to patients, restoring function as well as es-thetic. I believe that Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is the most important specialty in dentistry and medicine which combines art with science. It is appealing when patients leave the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) clinics not only with good function and esthetic, but also in a better psychological status. And I find the AAOMS’s motto “Saving Faces.. Changing Lives..” very insi...
I decided to do my research report on dentistry because it is a perfect blend of science and art. It is a science in that you must fully comprehend on the different types of diagnostic and procedures you are doing. It is an art in that you are constantly working with your hands to create a beautiful smile. The impact you make on helping a person achieve an impeccable smile is not one to compare with materialistic things like money or cars. People often mistake dentist as only doing practices when in fact they could do more, like research. I was fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to interview Dr. Sarah Pham, DDS, a close family friend who practices dentistry in her own private office in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Pham was

Using the six assumptions of adult learning I can implement what pro instructors in the art of andragogy do by designing the tooth anatomy class to be self-directed, creative and collaborative as opposed to the teacher-directed lecture format. These changes should better engage the students, allow them to express what experience they already possess in this area, and apply the information directly to the patient and satisfy their need and emotions as to how the information can better help society.
I chose to become a dentist as being a child I had to visit a dentist many times for correction of malaligned teeth that i had. So my dentist who was also a specialist in the field of orthodontics inspired me deeply as it gave me a vague idea of how can i also bring smile and self confidence back to an individual by providing him with a competent smile again by incorporating the blend of my hand creativity and mental alertness, same as my dentist did for me thus returning me my self esteem and the confidence to smile again .Thus i found this field very satisfying and fulfilling.
Starting the ninth grade with a mouth full of brackets was not at all how I envisioned starting my high school career. However, two and a half years of embarrassing school pictures, agonizing pain, and a lisp, the final product made it all worth it. The day I completed my orthodontic treatment made me realize why people choose to pursue dentistry. The instantaneous boost in self-confidence that I found from a glowing, electric smile was what sparked my
