I have chosen the constellation Orion the Hunter as my favorite. He has always interested me, ever since I was a young kid. I really like his Greek Myth with Artemis (who, by the way, is my favorite god/goddess.) I also enjoyed hunting as a sport in the muggle world, before I was accepted into Hogwarts, so I assume that may have influenced my decision. Orion's current name derives from Greek mythology. Orion had many names from different cultures, however. For example, the name for the constellation in medieval Muslim Astronomy, he is known as Al-jabbar, or "the giant." In China, he is known as Shen. He has still other names in European Folklore, and the Americas. Orion can be seen easiest in the sky during the evenings of January through March. …show more content…
I have selected the myth to tell you that I have heard before, and think most interesting. Here it is: Orion was a hinter, and thus enjoyed hunting. He spent much time hunting with Artemis, the goddess of the moon, the hunt, and animals, as well as childbirth. Sometimes known as the "Eternal Maiden," she never got married or had children (which I've always thought odd, seeing as she's the goddess of childbirth.) Obviously a very beautiful woman, many men fell for her and did desperate things to attract her attention. Artemis was known for killing (or worse) such men. However, Orion decided that he had a chance, and when he was declined by Artemis, he tried to force her to marry him. Artemis, who was angered, sent a scorpion known as Scorpio to kill Orion. Zeus, however, took pity on Orion, and placed him in the sky, opposite from Scorpius, and is seen fleeing form Scorpius as he sinks below the horizon in the …show more content…
Being the son of a god and a mortal, he was known as a Demigod. Orion was the most powerful of all Demigods, using the power of flight, which he had inherited from his father, to make him more powerful than the other Demigods. One day, he decided to set out to see what he could do. If he could become powerful enough, perhaps the gods would send him on a Quest, and he could earn much glory. Orion met a Centaur on his travels, and was taught by him. The Centaur's name was Pholus. Pholus taught Orion well, and Orion became even more powerful then he ever was.
One day, as Orion was in the forest training with Pholus, they were attacked by a Fury, a six winged, hag-like creature form the underworld. Orion tried to save Pholus, but couldn't get there in time. The Fury killed Pholus, and turned to Orion. Orion knocked an arrow on his bow and slew the creature with a single arrow. Now alone, Orion traveled through the forest, using the skills Pholus had taught him to stay alive.
Five years later, Orion was setting up camp in the woods, when he saw the most beautiful woman he had ever seen running through the forest, pursued by a pack of wolves. Orion rushed to her aid, killing the entire wolf pack with only his bow and his hands. Orion later discovered that the woman was the goddess Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. They traveled together for many

One of the myths was, Polyphemus was in love with a sea nymph named Galateia, a sicilian nereid who had cheated on him with a man named Acis. When Polyphemus discovered this he crushed Acis under a rock. Another myth was the story of Odysseus. This story was when Polyphemus had captured Odysseus one of victorious greek leaders and twelve of his crew members when they were sailing for home from the trojan war. They became captured when they arrived to an unknown island of cyclopes. Odysseus and his men came upon the cave of Polyphemus, and went inside in hopes to steal food while Polyphemus was away tending his flock. Curiosity got the best of Odysseus as he wanted to see what a cyclops looked like. Odysseus and his men hid in the cave waiting for Polyphemus to come back.
Due to a accidental exclusion of sacrifice to greek goddess of hunt and moon named Artemis by a the king, Artemis got furious and sent a huge boat to come down and terrorize the people. Atalanta was able to join the hunt full of men heros because of her talent. No one thought she should be there but Atalanta proved them all wrong by killing the boar just before anymore people got hurt. However Atalanta had shown that she could do things just as good as a boy could leading to her father taking her back into his home, this step in the Hero's Journey is called the atonement with the father yet that does happen until later in Atalanta's life. Nevertheless though Atalanta did not face the steps in order as Joseph Campbell mentions in the Hero's

It is revealed that the goddess of wild animals, Artemis, is angry, and the sacrifice of Iphigenia and the massacre of Troy are mentioned. Agamemnon was well aware of what he was getting into and began his worried oscillation between the love of his daughter and the love of his power, prestige, and country. His weakness of character is becoming more apparent, his ethics appear arbitrary.
Euripides’s The Bacchae tells the story of Dionysus, son of the Greek god Zeus and the mortal Shemele. Conceived through an illustrious affair between the two, things got complicated when Zeus’s second wife Hera found out. Hera set out to make her husband suffer; she came up with a devious plan, tricking Shemele into convincing Zeus into revealing his true form to her. Thus after initially saying no, Zeus is persuaded and eventually appears to Shemele in the form of a lighting bolt thus causing her to die seemingly instantaneously from his presence. Thankfully for Dionysus, at the very moment of her death, Zeus other son Hermes, whom he had conceived with the goddess Maia, saved his brother’s life by placing and sewing his sibling within his father thigh to protect him from the wrath of Hera until he was fully grown and ready to be born into the world. Unfortunately for Dionysus, his mother’s mortal family, whom he was returned to after his birth, did not believe in his true parentage. Believing “That Semele having slept with some man/ proceed...

In considering the relationship between the meanings of myths and their representation of women, we learned that the major role in shaping the narratives was played by men. Myths reveal to us the experiences of women living in the patriarchal society and we gain the symbol value accorded to women and we come to realize what the term "Woman" meant to the ancient Greek man. Reading through the various stories on Goddesses and queens, monsters and more. Princesses, we learn that there are three major levels of women in Greek mythology. The first level is composed of the divine beings known as the goddesses.
In the Greek society women were treated very differently than they are today. Women in ancient Greece were not allowed to own property, participate in politics, and they were under control of the man in their lives. The goddess Aphrodite did not adhere to these social norms and thus the reason the earthly women must comply with the societal structure that was set before them. Aphrodite did not have a father figure according to Hesiod, and therefore did not have a man in her life to tell her what to do. She was a serial adulteress and has many children with many men other than her husband. She was not the only goddess from the ancient Greek myths to cause doubt in the minds of men. Gaia and the Titan Rhea rise up against their husbands in order to protect their children. Pandora, another woman in the Greek myths, shows that all evil comes from woman. Aphrodite, Gaia, Rhea, and Pandora cause the ancient Greek men to be suspicious of women because of her mischievous and wild behavior.
Aphrodite, is the goddess of love, beauty and romance. She is Piper’s mother. Her Roman aspect is Venus. Her animal symbols are the Dolphin, swan, dove… Her plant symbols are apples, roses, quince…
