Oral Pathology is a specialty branch of dental medicine that is concerned with the detection, treatment and management of diseases that affect the oral region. Its area of specialty also covers the oral and dental treatment of patients that present with medical conditions.

Our oral cavity lies in close proximity to the brain and heart while at the same time it is inextricably connected to our lungs and stomach. If this area is being compromised by an oral disease, it can affect the overall health and wellbeing of our whole body. Extensive and prolonged damage to our oral cavity may even impair our ability for normal daily functions – and diminish our capacity to do the things that we often take for granted like eating, talking and breathing. …show more content…

Our job is to detect and treat any underlying oral condition or pathological pattern that may pose a future health risk – the most serious of which is oral cancer.

Beyond just checking your teeth and gums, we investigate areas that a general practitioner does not: including your cheek, palate, tongue, face, neck, gum tissue, salivary gland, lip and floor of the mouth. The result is a highly accurate diagnosis in which we are able to determine the onset or development of any oral ailments, their root causes and stage of development. This allows us to treat and manage the effects with higher efficiency and better outcomes.

Evaluation and treatment may include observation, biopsy (removal of suspicious tissue for lab examination), laser removal, or excision. Areas of concern are evaluated under a microscope to confirm a diagnosis.
