More than 30 million children trundle through school cafeteria lines and 24% of children leave their food untouched. If 24% of students leave their food untouched, this is a waste of perfectly good food. They leave their food untouched because they just don’t like the food that they are given, but they are forced to get it because they have no other choice other than that specific type of food. If students could choose the type of food that they want by leaving campus and going to their favorite restaurant, it could benefit students tremendously. to relieve stress that sometime school causes, it gives students a chance to interact with the outside world, and it also helps improve students overall mood. Having an open campus at lunch in high school has been an issue in recent decades. Students lunches used to be an hour long, but recently they have been cut to 30 minutes only allowing students to eat and quickly go back to class. Teachers and administration don’t want students to have as much leisure to do things that could potentially get students in trouble. North shore High school in Glen Head has an open campus at lunch giving students freedoms to leave schools campus. Students gave very good feedback on the way students make use of their time at lunch. Students would go home and visit their family and eat home cooked meals at lunch instead of pre made foods. Teachers reported that in most cases students after coming back from lunch would be more energized and improved on their mood which makes for a better environment to teach. Teachers loved the idea of students being able to leave school during lunch because it is very beneficial for students. High schools should have an open campus at lunch because it allows students to leave the stressful environment and go get food they enjoy giving them the opportunity to relieve stress and reenergize to tackle the rest of the day. “Being able to leave school for a while can be an excellent rest-and-restart for the rest of the day” (A.G. Rud). when students have an open campus they get to leave school and destress and hangout with friends while eating good food that they enjoy. When student seat food that they like depending if it's healthy or not it could energize them more than school food. “This means that open campus lunch would energize children from being on their own and allow them to return fully prepared to finish things up” (A.G Rud). Students are more energized and perform better after they eat a meal that they enjoy improving test scores and overall classwork. High schools benefit from having an open campus because students come back refreshed and more energized which allows them to perform better in class making the school look good. High schools should have an open campus at lunch because it gives students a chance to eat food that they like instead of them eating food from the cafeteria that they might not like. If students eat a meal that they enjoy it could improve their overall mood. “And according to one study, you shouldn't save chicken soup for the sniffles: Rats who had some slept better and were more agile. More important, they felt better” (Pierre). Different types of foods have different types of effects on the brain and if a student was sick and didn't feel well and the cafeteria wasn't giving out soup, if high schools had an open campus for everyone the student that wasnt feeling well didn't want to go home the student could go out for lunch and get soup which would hopefully make the student feel better. “The brain releases dopamine when the body receives something it enjoys” (Pierre). The body ingests the certain food it likes it releases dopamine in the brain which makes the whole body feel well improving the overall mood of a student which in many cases could potentially prevent a student who was in a bad mood before lunch keep them from doing something horrible like talking back to a teacher or even get into a fight. High schools should have an open campus at lunch because it can change a student's mood. Having an open campus at lunch is beneficial for students because it allows students to go out into the world and experience how it is to be an adult and interact with the world outside of a school environment.
Allowing students to go off campus and act as adults as in ordering their own food like they would have to do in the future is allowing them to grow. “Open campus lunch is observed to have taught students to be able to interact with the world and be more responsible in certain ways that are closer to how adults do it” (9 Primary Pros and Cons of Open Campus Lunch). When students get freedom it could help them grow. Freedom makes students feel like they are being treated like adults and they act more mature. “they have to communicate with other people when they go to the bank and then to the dining establishment, which is really helpful to their learning even if it is just quick” (9 Primary Pros and Cons of Open Campus Lunch). Students can learn by going out and interacting with the world. They learn ways to talk to people that they don’t know without the pressure of seeing that person again. They can benefit from it because they will continue to meet people for the rest of their lives. Having an open campus at lunch is beneficial for students because it helps teach responsibility by interacting with the outside
world. High schools should have an open campus at lunch because there are many benefits, but there are also some things to take into consideration. Having an open campus at lunch could be looked at an opportunity for students to interact in delinquent activities. “However, there are more reasons I disagree with allowing high school students the privilege of an open campus. Sure, it's great being able to escape school for a while, but soon enough that may easily become the rest of the day” (Johnson). Students go off campus and forget that they have to return to school, or they do not want to return to school and makes it easy for them to skip the rest of the day because the students are already off campus. “But concerns of pedestrian and vehicular safety and the misuse of free time, including drug and alcohol use” (Saslow). Students in their time of freedom may not choose the right thing to do and could put them in situations in which they are offered or tempted to use drugs or alcohol since they are no longer on campus. “ there is a fringe group of about 5 percent who are irresponsible in their behavior and should not be allowed off campus.” (Saslow). Many students do use their free time in beneficial ways, but 5 percent of students misuse their time and the 95 percent of students that are using their free time correctly should not have to be punished for the 5 percent of student’s actions. Students can make good use of their free time or they could misuse their time. Having an open campus could potentially lead to students interacting in delinquent activities such as skipping school or doing drugs. Students often leave the school and have fun, but then students do not want to go back to school and learn. Students want to keep wanting to have fun and sometimes results in students skipping classes, but that is not the case for all students. Many students would benefit from having an open campus because it allows the students to go out into the world and interact like adults teaching them responsibility, time management, and life skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives. Having an open campus lets student have a chance to breath outside of school and just not think about school for half an hour or an hour. If students can go out and buy food they want to eat it could allow them to relieve stress and improve their overall mood making learning at school more fun and comfortable. High schools should start having open campuses for all students because not only would it benefit the students it could also benefit the school. If students are happy they perform better making the school look better. Many things could be avoided by letting High schools have an open campus like food waste, Student stress, and ability for students to interact with the world.
Changes need to be made in American school systems. In fact, once American schools are reformed it would make it easier for those who want to learn receive an education. In the essay, “Lets’ Really Reform Our Schools” by Anita Garland, Garland explains why schools need to be reformed. Garland claims that American schools are in trouble and that they are a disaster. Garland also mentions that we need to restructure our thinking about the whole purpose of going to school and what one should expect from students. To start off, attendance shouldn’t be mandatory and one must stop forcing everyone to attend school. Next, cafeteria lunch is always a big problems with students. Students are hyped up with all
Schools are spending too much money with this program that could be spent on other benefits for schools. Rather than using the money to get students new technology or property it 's wasted on a lunch program that students do not enjoy nor want to purchase. In the Article, “School Lunch Food is Not Fresh, Students Say” Journalist Audrey Levine interviews high school students about they feel about their school lunches. “It’s way too expensive now, but I’m still buying,” said senior Stephanie Huang. “And I don’t think more people are bringing lunch because
has to spend more money on changing school lunch system from eliminating unnecessary spending portion of system and create farming class. As reported by Cooper, “ The National School Lunch Program needs 8 billion dollars to feed 30 million children a year to serve high quality foods.” However, this price of amount has to be double to serve healthy foods to students because our next generation has to grow up with high quality foods not with low quality foods. Moreover, according to Cooper, the U.S. spends more than 100 million dollars on fast foods portion which the U.S. suppose to spend less amount of money on fast foods to improve the entire food system of the country. If the U.S. government lower the expense of fast food system and raises the amount of money for school lunches, entire schools of the U.S. would get positive results. For example, students could brainstorm very fast as Albert Einstein, and gain more energy to work out on their gym classes. Furthermore, school have to create agriculture class for students to have strong knowledges in foods. Students can literally be ware of what they eat at their lunch times; they will know vegetables grow in the ground and how foods are really fresh. Therefore, schools must provide farming class as in Berkeley; students have rights to know how foods are important to them. As a result, students could get a lot of benefits for changing school
Also if Oak Creek High School has off-campus lunch, the school would save more money. By letting the student body have an open campus lunch, the school would be required to spend less money for clean up supplies, equipment, and for maintaining the cafeteria. The less that’s spent and the more that’s saved will allow more money to be available. There could be more money for extra-curricular activities, sports, and clubs. The money could be used t...
The right to the student should be guaranteed to open campus lunch. We are living in a failed experiment, that is the government controlling the school lunch. It is time to step out of the failed experiment and do another experiment, only this time successful. Student should be allowed to have open campus lunch.
Wandering kids. Bumper to bumper traffic. Drug dealing. Is this the picture drawn when local students have fifty minutes of freedom during lunch to do whatever they please? Students should not be allowed to leave their school campus during lunch. An open campus would lead to truancy, disturb local businesses and neighborhoods, and cause crime.
Throughout Virginia Woolf’s writings, she describes two different dinners: one at a men’s college, and another at a women’s college. Using multiple devices, Woolf expresses her opinion of the inequality between men and women within these two passages. She also uses a narrative style to express her opinions even more throughout the passages.
For the majority of high school students having the option to go home for lunch or to go somewhere to eat would be the ultimate dream. High school students do not think about the dangers and worry that open campus lunch would cause for staff and parents. They do not think about the small sum of students who would spend that time doing drugs or making messes at local businesses. There would also be an amount of students who would not return, or they may be late returning to school due to traffic at fast food places. Faculty would also have the fret of an increase of car accidents caused from the limited time students would have to go wherever and get back before their next class. On the other hand, students would learn responsibilities and time management. Parents would be forced to give their children money to eat out. Along with the money on their school lunch accounts, or they would be apart of the free lunch school program. Schools cannot have open campus lunches
“Schools become the ‘last frontier’ for hungry kids.” usatoday.com). Thus, many students do not carry the proper balance of nutrition through school that conceals the students indoors through the school day. Students are in a constant battle for motivation in the classroom atmosphere that does not consider a student’s pace while learning. Today, students in community schools from Michigan seldom use open campus privileges. (Johnson, Adrian. “Should high schools have open campus for lunch?” www.mlive.com). Students’ are required to stay on campus to abstain from the increase of truancy leading to missing instructional
Recently closed campus has been an argument at our school lately. Should a student have the choice to leave campus? Yes it’s a great idea but lately the school board has been putting it in our heads that that is a bad idea. Students love an open campus it gives them variety. They hate the idea of eating the same unappealing meal every day. Lunch gives students a moment to blow off steam and have some free time. Open campus gives students the time to learn to be more responsible.
Dining facilities, especially the main on-campus food facility, Gibbons Dining Hall, need to remain open later to accommodate everyone. By giving students more time to eat, more students would opt for the more costly meal plans and not have to load up on snacks and other items from off campus stores such as Wal-mart. The less students go off campus, the more likely their revenue is to stay in the university. The addition of dining hours would certainly benefit everyone involved in the university.
At State University, the school has a set of certain hours that one is able to go to the cafeteria. However, those hours only comply with the workers and the students no matter what. To many of the students, and others as well, those hours are not compliable to their schedule. Students are left with hunger, having no choice than to be late to class to go buy a snack or go off campus to buy fast food, when not necessary. Not all the students have the same class schedule which should be able to allow different cafeteria hours to comply to everyone's needs, not only certain people.
With the implementation of the “Healthy Kids Hunger-Free Act” schools are not serving as many lunches and participation is decreasing. According to the Government Accountability Office (GOA), “Nationwide, student participation declined by 1.2 million students(or 3.7 percent) from school year 2010-2011 through school year 2012-2013, after having increased steadily for many years”(sec. 1). The school lunches became more distasteful and bland; the combinations of foods did not make sense, and the portion sizes decreased significantly. In order to support the cafeteria
Students learn and do their best when they are hungry, and uncomfortable! That makes perfect sense right? If you’re like most Americans, this may be one of the most ridiculous statements you have ever heard. I know I have never done anything better hungry. Many students sit through their lunch time at school because they have no food to eat because they don’t have the money to afford it, or they are not able to bring food from home for various reasons. This is why many schools have free and reduced lunch programs. But not everybody can apply for these programs; even middle class families in today’s economy sometimes can’t give their child cash every day. Times are tough, and every family is different. These are good programs, but they are not good enough. One child missing a meal, and going hungry is too many in my book. That’s why I think it should be at least a state law in North Carolina, if not a federal law, that offers free lunch in all public schools for all students, regardless of income. This way it’s simple, cost effective and easy, and nobody will be singled out, or go hungry if they do not bring their lunch from home.
Not only do students save time, but now students have the benefit of having a variety to choose from. Having multiple private food vendors on campus gives students a variety to choose from rather than just the usual. Students typically get tired of eating the same food. For instance, eating the same old breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day can make eating dreadful. Just like when a mom feeds her child last night 's leftovers. Eating just isn 't the same which is why students need a variety on campus. Now that there is a diversity of foods students are likely to stay on campus, which is beneficial if a student has back to back classes. Also, now that students have a variety to choose from, students can replenish their taste buds and keep themselves pleased. One other perk to having a variety is students can have a place they really enjoy. For instance, everyone has a favorite place to go to that is impossible to get sick of, it is very possible
