The article titled One Foot in Front of the Other was about the Women’s March on Washington and the reasons why the marchers were there. The event occurred because the people participating in the march were afraid that President Donald Trump will take away the civil rights and reproductive system rights the women have now. At the march, there wasn’t only women but also men who supported the marchers as well as other minority groups like the LGBTQ. The authors wrote about how the environment at the march was very nonconfrontational because everyone there was in that place for the same reason. The women and men were speaking to each other on how women have the right to choose on what to do with their own bodies. The way the authors illustrated the march demonstrated how it was a powerful protest where …show more content…
The authors of the article got to speak to the people at the event, take part of it, and take pictures of the crowd with their signs. The way the authors wrote about the march gave a sense of liberal vibe. The people as well as the author supported the movement which conservatives, centralist, and all the other political parties would not be very open or even supportive of the cause at all. For example, one of the author wrote “But I know I will have memories of this march, this crowd, the can-do spirit and the solidarity and I will hope for better days to come” (Weiner 2017). The author shows total support for the march because she will have “memories” of this march as if it was one of the best days of her life, which can indicate that they are liberals or just open minded. Also, when the authors wrote about some of the reasons why parents brought their kids, mainly daughter, they showed compassion and wanted to spread the news to everyone else which made me come to conclusion that they were
“The idea of a march on Washington seized the imagination of A. Philip Randolph, president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters.” (Takaki,
One of the most influential leaders of the African American Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King Jr., stated in a letter from Birmingham Jail: “We have waited for more than 340 years for our constitutional and God-given rights.they were in reality standing up for what is best the American dream”(75). In the document written by Casey Hayden and Mary King, they discuss how there are many similarities between the way African Americans were being treated and the way women were being treated. These women go on to say that people aren’t discussing these issues enough socially to give them adequate importance. All of these advocates for both movements chose to voice their concerns and opinions through writing or speaking to groups rather than through violence. They were parallel in this sense because they thought this was the most effective way to get the message across to America.
By alluding to popular activists in today’s society and the use of inspirational photos, the article shows support to women’s rights and inspiration for other women to fight for their rights. Quoting Madeleine Albright with “there’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other,” it helps integrate the idea that, no matter how hard a few people work to change something, it takes a larger group to highlight the
In recent headlines, an American businesswoman was sent home from work without pay for not wearing the required heel height shoe to work. This woman quit her job to take a stand for women’s rights, and within a matter of days, other women began sharing stories of how it was required by their offices to wear a minimum heel height also. This is just a small example of the unfair stipulations placed on women in today’s patriarchal society. Lucille Clifton, an avid women right’s advocate, has dedicated the majority of her life to the progression of women’s rights through her writing. In her poem, “homage to my hips,” Clifton uses “hips” to symbolize women and their desire for equality in today’s male dominated world. Clifton’s poem attempts
The movie focused on Anthony and Stanton's determination to the movement of women's rights, and covering the first women's rights convention at Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. The women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls is where the battle started, the battle for legislation and protection of a married woman’s property rights. However, the filmmakers did not make mention of further accomplishments during 1848 like “slavery being abolished in the West Indies, the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-American war, the Communist Manifesto was published, and revolutions occurred in France and Germany” (McCann & Kim, 2013, p. 12). Thus, the 1848, the women’s rights convention at Seneca Falls can be claimed has the foremother of women’s liberation, however, limiting itself t...
The listener visualizes what the majority of women are doing and how they choose to ignore their rights. It paints a picture of the average woman using these material items to make up for the rights they do not have. Asking for more purses and clothes is easier than asking for their equality. If they had their rights, then they could buy those items on their own without the need to beg from men and the inequality would show . Women would not be portrayed as very dependent especially on males. The imagery provides a picture of what women are doing and makes the reader think about how that image could change if they had their
Through out history, Americans have fought for the rights of freedom in their country, freedoms that have been passed down through dozen’s of generations. Freedom’s such as religion, speech, press, slavery and the right to vote. Americans, though very aware of their freedoms, often take them for granted and forget the struggles that their ancestors went through to obtain them. One example of this struggle is a woman’s right to be treated and looked upon by the government as equals. This was not an easy battle to win, and it took a strong few to begin to bring the struggle that women had faced for centuries to an end.
When creating a comparative rhetorical analysis of two different feminist essays, we must first define the term “feminism”. According to Merriam-Webster.com, feminism is “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities”. Feminism is a also a long term social movement, one that’s been in the works since the early 1900’s. However, as any challenger to the norm might receive, the words ‘feminism’ and ‘feminist’ have gotten a bad reputation. Throughout the years, popular opinion has agreed that if you’re a feminist, you hate men, and don’t shave. It’s a very close-minded belief, and both Lindy West and Roxane Gay agree. Both authors of the essays I am comparing today, West and Gay try and convey their beliefs that feminism isn’t what you think it is. However, they do it in very different ways. Who conveyed their beliefs of feminism better and the superior argument? That is what I am going to display today.
People from around the country came by any means necessary to support the march. One man from Chicago began rol...

They hold biweekly meetings to discuss upcoming events, community needs and outreach, and building a stronger sense of community in the coalition. If they are not hosting their own protest or march, they promote and attend other activism driven events in the tri-state area that align with Millions March’s beliefs, values, and demands. As an organization, they stand in solidarity with organizations all over the country with similar goals who have also come together for action in response to the victims of police brutality and abuse of power. In addition to stand in solidarity with cities like Baltimore, Oakland, Charleston, and Ferguson, Millions March NYC is dedicated to educating the community. They hold educational workshops about global and local issues. Their workshops cover issues like oppression in youth, safety in the LGBT community, the history of movements and liberation, and the connection between what’s happening in our own communities and the militarized policing in Palestine. They make an effort to make sure that members of the community are aware of the issues as well as their
The Women's Rights Movement continues to impact everything around us, reshaping our world with every step of equality and empowerment. Everyone has an impact on our world and everything we do can change something forever. Despite the acts during the women’s rights movement, gender discrimination is still in effect and impacting women’s social, economic, and political standing, which shows the continuation of their struggle for equality in society Before the women's rights movement, they were treated horribly. Women had to rely on husbands to live well, and they weren't even treated like human beings. They couldn't vote, it was illegal, and they weren't even allowed to own property.
Starting with those who doesn’t believe in feminism but believe in equity, to the other category who are only against feminism because it belittles men, or because it shows them as rapist or violent. Cathy Young cited different cases to show how men and women are treated, in other way to show how people respond or accept it, for example the raping case in Ohio University and how the jury considered them drunk without punishing the man for raping the girl just because she was drunk too. The arguments had been done about if feminism is a bad thing for men, if it only cares about showing them as violent, rapist, criminals or if feminism are supported because females are (as described) oppressed. The author stated that the gap between men and women is decreasing in the 21st century, they are both treated nearly the same in some fields. The article is published through the internet, to everyone so everyone knows and respect the different perspectives about feminism but in my opinion, I think the author directed it to those who are slowly giving up their right, the novice women encouraging them to speak up their rights, in other way I felt that I’m one of the intended audience to know how people from the same sex as me are thinking so I decide what’s wrong and what’s right, and never to let go of my own right. The author is being both serious and narrative as she concerned more about what other said, she used it as her way of showing different minds and thoughts when in second paragraph she used the quotations more than once and quoted the women’s words ex: ‘ I don’t need feminism because egalitarianism is better!’ and
The marches were organized by feminist groups in response to Constable Michael Sanguinetti’s statement that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order to not be victimized” (Craig, 2011). The demonstrations, called ‘SlutWalks,’ consist primarily of young women marching in provocative clothing to protest the attribution of sexual assault to a victim’s appearance and “assumptions about their sexuality,” as well as other forms of victim-blaming (Jarvis et al., 2011, FAQs). These marches are part of a larger sex-positive feminist movement in support of rape victims and against
