Feminist Comparative Rhetorical Analysis Elsa Knight ENGL 151 09-27-2015
When creating a comparative rhetorical analysis of two different feminist essays, we must first define the term “feminism”. According to Merriam-Webster.com, feminism is “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities”. Feminism is a also a long term social movement, one that’s been in the works since the early 1900’s. However, as any challenger to the norm might receive, the words ‘feminism’ and ‘feminist’ have gotten a bad reputation. Throughout the years, popular opinion has agreed that if you’re a feminist, you hate men, and don’t shave. It’s a very close-minded belief, and both Lindy West and Roxane Gay agree. Both authors of the essays I am comparing today, West and Gay try and convey their beliefs that feminism isn’t what you think it is. However, they do it in very different ways. Who conveyed their beliefs of feminism better and the superior argument? That is what I am going to display today.
The first essay I will analysing is “What No One Else Will Tell You About Feminism” by Lindy West. In her article, published on Jezebel, August 2nd, 2012, West claims that everyone who doesn’t think of women as objects, or treats them like dirt. She

then goes on to describe the history of feminism, highlighting the three ‘waves’ in their ideals and goals. After that, she sums up her essay by displaying two messages: One, that women don’t exist to please men. Two, that male privilege is real. At the very end, West repeats her opening statement that we are all feminists. This essay, in my opinion, is very peculiar. West doesn’t rely on the usual persuasive tactics. Instead, she uses a technique of using comedy and curse words to relate to a younger audience. However, that is also her detriment. In the process of trying to be funny, West in the meantime also forgets the ‘persuasion’ part of her essay. I believe it’s very hard to change someone’s opinion, when the mindset and tone of the article is ‘I am right, you are wrong. If you are wrong, you are a terrible human being. Shame on you.’ For example, one of the quotes in the article says “Guess what? You're a feminist. If you are a person alive in the world, other people, both men and women, have told you that all feminists are hairy, reactionary…who need to quit cryin'... HOWEVER. THAT IS OBVIOUSLY STUPID.” Those are the opening words, and in my opinion, don’t sound very persuasive. To paraphrase West’s article: You are a feminist. This is what feminism is, and you are one. Take my word for it. The second essay is “Bad Feminist” by Roxane Gay.
In this essay, Gay deconstructs the stereotypical view of a feminist, by showing that you can be a feminist, even if you’re not in the small box the rest of the world thinks you should be in, in order to qualify as a ‘feminist’. Throughout the essay, Gay uses several quotes and stories from other women who are either afraid to say that they’re feminists, or don’t quite understand you don’t have to be in the limiting ‘box’, even though in their moral beliefs and actions, these sourced women are, in fact, feminists. According to Gay, if we didn’t have this stereotype, then maybe more women with diverse lives and views would be able to ‘come out’ as
feminists. In short, if feminists are confined to strict lifestyles, Gay assumes that she herself must be a ‘bad feminist’. However, if all of us tried to get rid of the bad connotation the word ‘feminist’ has, then we might not have the ‘bad’ feminists. We’ll have a diverse amount of people who believe that men and women are equal. I think that Gay did a very good job portraying her argument that society should try and expand its view of what a feminist is.
Ulrich had a well explanation for her slogan on "well-behaved women." She supports her slogan by bringing up certain women stereotypes that have been going on throughout history. She uses these stereotypes to explain how certain people view on women.
Women’s Brains deals with the abuse of scientific data in order to “prove” negative social analyses with prejudiced groups such as women, blacks, and poor people. Evolutionary biologist Stephen Gould points out the flaws in the scientific methods of various scientists and correctly asserts that many scientists incorrectly used anthropometric data to support social analyses that degrade prejudiced groups.
Men and women both drive cars, it’s a simple necessity to be able go to work for most people, however, from the commercials on television, one would assume that men are the primary purchasers of cars. In Steve Craig’s essay, Men’s Men and Women’s Women, he analyzes four commercials to illustrate how advertisers strategically targets the viewers. Craig argues that advertisers will grasp the attention of the viewer by the gender ideals that both men and women have of each other. Not only do advertisers pick a target audience demographic, but they also will target the audience at specific time to air their commercials. By analyzing an Audi and Bud Light commercial, one can see that Craig arguments are true to an extent but it appears that commercials have gone from an idealized world to a more realistic and relatable stance. for are still [true, however it seems that commercials may have altered to appear more realistic.] [relevant to an extent. This is to say, it appears that advertisers may have altered their commercial tactics. ]
During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s the fight for equal and just treatment for both women and children was one of the most historically prominent movements in America. Courageous women everywhere fought, protested and petitioned with the hope that they would achieve equal rights and better treatment for all, especially children. One of these women is known as Florence Kelley. On July 22, 1905, Kelley made her mark on the nation when she delivered a speech before the National American Woman Suffrage Association, raising awareness of the cruel truth of the severity behind child labor through the use of repetition, imagery and oxymorons.
“I have no idea what a feminist is although I have heard the term before,” said Stewart. I told her not to feel bad because I did not know the meaning of the term until I took the class and gave her bell hooks’ definition. Feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression. Her response was “I still don’t consider myself a feminist because I don’t really care about trying to make a change for women’s rights. I think it’s as good as it is going to get,” said
I chose this word because the tone of the first chapter seems rather dark. We hear stories of the hopes with which the Puritans arrived in the new world; however, these hopes quickly turned dark because the Purtains found that the first buildings they needed to create were a prison, which alludes to the sins they committed; and a cemetery, which contradicts the new life they hoped to create for themselves.
In “In Living Color: Race and American Culture”, Michael Omi claims that racism still takes place in America’s contemporary society. According to Omi, media and popular culture shape a segregating ideology by giving a stereotypical representation of black people to the public, thus generating discrimination between races (Omi 115:166). In “Bad Feminist: Take One”, Roxane Gay discusses the different roles that feminism plays in our society. She argues that although some feminist authors and groups try to create a specific image of the feminist approach, there is no definition that fully describe feminism and no behaviors that can make someone a good feminist or a bad feminist (Gay 304:306). Women’s rights pioneer, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, in her speech, The Destructive Male, expresses her feelings about Women's suffrage in 1868, and brought to light the misconception that women are not equal to man and imply that men bring more destruction than restoration.
Within Hon. Shirley Chisholm’s well known speech, Equal Rights for Women, which she presented on May 21, 1969, she discusses in detail the ideology of woman’s rights before the United States House of Representatives. She touches base on her own experience with discrimination, how society has prejudice against women, and introduces the Equal rights act, in which she states “that has been before every Congress for the last 40 years and that sooner or later must become part of the basic law of the land.” With her speech, Hon. Shirley Chisholm makes a substantial argument about women’s rights. With her use of anecdotes, counter arguments, and statistics, her speech obtains great value.
Hello Ladies, started off the 2010 Old Spice campaign, The Man Your Man Could Smell Like, with this appealing greeting to the lady viewers. After research, the Old Spice team found that just about 60% of all men body wash purchases were by women, which meant the wives and girlfriends were the ones buying the body wash their men use. Old Spice also recognized that during the early 2000s bar soap had started to be replaced by men’s body wash, thus creating a very competitive market and an opportunity for Old Spice to advertise their product. Since the last century, we have seen feminists rise to fight for women’s right on the basis of gender equality. While feminists did have an impact in this world on feminism, not all feminists had the same point of view. A well-known example of this statement is two texts that had an impact for feminism on a national level and yet one contradicted the other: “Lean In: What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” by Sheryl Sandberg and “Dig Deep: Beyond Lean In” by bell hooks. Sandberg shares her anecdote as reasons for her points on feminism and hooks writes an article that contradicts Sandberg’s view on feminism.
However, the stigma of openly sexual women was not eliminated therefore marking down women's sexual freedom because of the stigma they carry in society.In conclusion, chapter by chapter hooks highlights how feminist theory repeatedly excluded non-white and working class women by ignoring white supremacy as a racial problem and by disregarding the highly psychological impact of class in their political and social status all while, in the case of black women, facing three classes of oppression in a racist, sexist and capitalist state. Throughout the book the author defines feminism, the meaning of sisterhood, what feminism is to men in addition to brushing upon power, work, violence and education. Although I found some elements of this book problematic hooks' critiques of feminist theory and the movement are well-presented, piercingly direct and remain relevant.
Starting with those who doesn’t believe in feminism but believe in equity, to the other category who are only against feminism because it belittles men, or because it shows them as rapist or violent. Cathy Young cited different cases to show how men and women are treated, in other way to show how people respond or accept it, for example the raping case in Ohio University and how the jury considered them drunk without punishing the man for raping the girl just because she was drunk too. The arguments had been done about if feminism is a bad thing for men, if it only cares about showing them as violent, rapist, criminals or if feminism are supported because females are (as described) oppressed. The author stated that the gap between men and women is decreasing in the 21st century, they are both treated nearly the same in some fields. The article is published through the internet, to everyone so everyone knows and respect the different perspectives about feminism but in my opinion, I think the author directed it to those who are slowly giving up their right, the novice women encouraging them to speak up their rights, in other way I felt that I’m one of the intended audience to know how people from the same sex as me are thinking so I decide what’s wrong and what’s right, and never to let go of my own right. The author is being both serious and narrative as she concerned more about what other said, she used it as her way of showing different minds and thoughts when in second paragraph she used the quotations more than once and quoted the women’s words ex: ‘ I don’t need feminism because egalitarianism is better!’ and

Webster defines feminism as both "the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes" and "organized activity on the behalf of women's rights and interests" (Webster 418). Equality of the sexes (in terms of rights) and the furthering of women's rights are seemingly positive aspirations; yet people tend to describe feminism using negative terms, and feminism today has acquired a bad reputation. "Radical" and "extremists" are adjectives commonly applied to feminism as a whole, when, in truth, feminists who adopt extreme positions constitute the minority. Moreover, these "gender feminists," or "militant feminists," as many call them, although they receive the most public attention because of their aggressive tactics and high visibility, alienate people in broadcasting their views. Their goal, to create a "sentimental priesthood" that will achieve collective power and retribution as oppressed "victims" of a white-male supremacy, seems unreasonable (Himmelfarb 20). In contrast, "equity feminists," or "academic feminists," embrace the basic principles of feminism. They celebrate women's achievements, work for the individual rights of all women, and, as Christina Hoff Sommers aptly says, "want for women what they want for everyone, equal protection under the law" (Himmelfarb 20). Though not all feminists agree on how to reach this goal, most argue for a reasonable, realistic, and positive method. By contrasting the differing feminist ideas of writers like Adrienne Rich, Gertrude Himmelfarb, and Camille Paglia, one defines a winning brand of feminism: a philosophy founded on equity feminist ideology and dedicated to the achievement of social, political, economic, and intellectual reform.
