One Direction is a band that was formed on the ITV reality show The X Factor in 2010. Each member of the group auditioned on the show as solo contestants but failed to succeed past the bootcamp stage of the show. Simon Cowell, the executive and head judge of the show, then decided to form a group out of the boys, who later went on to finish third in the competition. Like other finalists from the past years, the band were offered a contract under Simon Cowell’s record label Syco, and within a year they shot up to number one with their debut single What Makes You Beautiful released in September 2011. Success for the band never seemed to diminish, as following their debut single they managed to have countless number one singles over the span of 5 years, including each album following their debut peaking at number one worldwide.
Syco, the band’s record label, is a joint venture between Simon Cowell and Sony Music Entertainment, with the

Computers were in development from as early as the 1950’s, but the general public wouldn’t hear of the World Wide Web until the 1980’s. By the year 2000, the internet was accessible to the general public from their home computers. It was used mainly for e-mailing, online shopping and research, but with its growing popularity, the World Wide Web was quick to expand its content. We can now, in the present day, access the internet on a number of platforms such as mobile phones, laptops and PCs, and even Smart Televisions, which makes a vast difference to the platforms people used 30 years ago.
Each of these sectors One Direction deliver content across exist as a profit
It was released in April 2005 as the lead single from their second album, From Under the Cork Tree (2005). With the music composed by lead vocalist and guitarist Patrick Stumpand all lyrics penned by bassist Pete Wentz, it was the bands first top 10 hit and it launched there career. In an interview with Rolling Stone that he slurred the lyrics in the chorus on purpose to make it sound better and he wanted the song to be a fun punk song. During the writing of the song, the band made 30 changes to it. He said that he saw the lyrics first time he sung it out loud and it sounded excellent so he came up with the rest. I have chosen this song because it brings back so so many significsant memories in my life, such as the first time my family went to America, this song was played almost 5 times every day on the radio. It is also a very lively, energetic song that can turn a frown upside-down in a second. Even when I am having a horrible day, when I get home and listen to this song it makes my day so much better and always brings a smile to my face. This song tells you that you must never give up without a fight and I believe that , that is a excellent morale to sing
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to rise to fame overnight? Shawn Mendes posted a six second video on the app vine in 2013, and woke up the next morning with over ten thousand followers (Biography). But many people don’t know why or how he became as popular and well known as he is now. “It was a mix of hard work and good luck” said Mendes (Hernandez). It didn’t take Shawn very long to be discovered by Andrew Gertler; Shawn's current manager, who then showed it to Island Records, who later signed Shawn in early 2014 (Biography). I chose this topic because I find it very interesting how Shawn grew to fame overnight. This essay will explain how successful Shawn Mendes has become so far, and how he was one of the most successful to come from social media.
“Over the days they got to know each other really well and performed better every week” (Akanksha, OneDirectionFans.net). Once F.Y.D., Diva Fever, and Belle Amie in the first four weeks, the boys were Simon’s only group in the competition. One Direction sadly finished third behind runner-up Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt Cardle. Although Simon Cowell had made it very clear that only the winner would be signed to a record label, he knew there was something special about the boys and offered One Direction to sign with Sony Music Entertainment.

In his article “How Indie Labels Changed the World”, Richard King focuses on one of the most notable artists to sign to an indie label, The Smiths. Formed by Steven Morrissey and Johnny Marr in 1982, The Smiths had arranged from their inception to sign with an independent record label, with Rough Trade being their ideal preference (King). This was more than a business decision as it was also one of personal identity for the group, as Marr expresses, "The very act of being on Rough Trade at the time was a statement in itself. It cut across our whole aesthetic." Like artists who embraced the D.I.Y. ethos before them, The Smiths did not want to appear grandiose or elite but rather to present themselves as realistic models for independent music production, inspiring the likeminded to take a shot at breaking into the music industry. When The Smiths eventually grew to a popularity better fitting the support of a major label, they began meeting with record companies and considering new deals. But Marr
As a result, the four ordinary ‘guys’ joined together as one and played classically influenced instrumental music and shared it with the public. Their videos were watched by more and more people and within a short period of time, then they became YouTube stars. From their popularity, they were able to sign a contract with Sony Masterworks in 2012 that allowed them to continue their
In 2000, Costa and another one of his friends, Duncan James, decided to form their own band, and they were soon joined by Ryan. Their manager Daniel Glatman said, "Duncan came to see me with his friend, Antony Costa, who was also in the same position [wanted to be in the music industry], and they told me that they wanted to do something together. When I asked them if they had anyone in mind to work with, they said they had a friend, Lee Ryan, whom they wanted to invite to join their band. The three of them came in a couple of days later and I was completely blown away by the incredibly talented stars that stood before me. "[7]
The history of the internet shows that the internet is not a new medium. The internet was initially created in the 1960's to as a way for the United States to stay connected in case of a nuclear fallout due to the possible consequences of the Cold War. F...
Individuals who pursue a career in the music industry are constantly being asked the question, “How do performing artists actually make it?” Some artists know early in life that they were meant to be in the music industry and others may simply stumble upon a great opportunity that puts them there. Whatever the case may be, most artists have different dreams and ideas of what making it is. It could be making a six figure salary for some and becoming a celebrity for others. In all cases this question needs to be answered in preparation for a successful career in the music industry. The answer to that question and the key to becoming a success within the music industry is the development and maintenance of a dedicated fanbase.
Connecting by Twitter, Instagram or Facebook can reach out millions. Social media is the new asset to marketing and maintaining a career in the music business. With millions even billions of users actively using these sites, it is a promoters’ tool to take advantage of it. “91% of mobile Internet access is for social activities and There are over 1.15 billion users access Facebook” (Luu). These numbers are shocking and social media users are seeing the messages that are sent out multiple times in different way. “Social media is connecting Billboard Music with Twitter in late May to provide real time charts for listeners that are connected via Twitter”(Brusuelas). This is a perfect example of how the future will be. Twitter and Billboard music will allow people to see new upcoming music and a way for musicians to interact with the consumers.
Social Media influences what music we listen to. In the past people used to listen to songs that had meaning behind them, and it was because they personally enjoyed the music. For example “ Go back in time a few decades, to the 60s, 70s, and 80s… Many of the bands of the past wrote music that had real depth to it. Their lyrics were meaningful.”- states GiannaA. In today’s society
“The Net’s beginnings went largely unnoticed by the public. For all its technological brilliance, the Internet of today is far removed from the concepts that propelled initial research. And the Internet’s story- which has become the World Wide Web’s story- has not been so much one of planned development as of individual genius, at least until recently.” (Gilster. 1997).
In today’s society, just the mere mention of the name “One Direction” can cause a young teenage girl to experience heart palpitations, sweaty palms, and an intense desire to jump up and down. Even during the nineties, with the births of *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys, the reception from the fans have not been as enormous as it is now. In terms of fan reception, teenagers are an interesting group as they represent a wide, powerful community that interacts smartly through social media. Not only does there seem to be an established relationship between the bands and their fans, but there also seems to be a strong effect in the fans’ psychological states, creating an infatuation that exceeds the standard admiration.
It is crazy to believe that such a brilliant invention like the internet has only been around for about sixty years. The internet began with the use of huge electronic computers in the 1950’s but the use of “telegraphing” and the general concept of the internet came in to play way before the cyber world was invented. The whole concept of the internet is to send data from point A to point B and this concept was being practiced way before dial-up internet on a Dell computer was in the picture. Before individuals had access to ...
During the 20th century, electricity, the telephone, the automobile, and the airplane made the world more accessible to people and transforming our society in the process. Most people had to call their local bank to check their statements. Or wait for the paper invoice in the mail. The latest score for last night's hockey game were found in the local newspaper. Then came the accessible worldwide system of interconnected networks called the Internet. "The Internet is the publicly accessible worldwide system of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using a standardized Internet Protocol (IP). It is made up of thousands of smaller commercial, academic, domestic, and government networks. It carries various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, and the interlinked Web pages and other documents of the World Wide Web." (Wikipedia). The Internet has changed the way we communicate, the way we learn and the way we trade. Communication trends have changed in the past few years that no one would have predicted. It is evident that the Internet is reshaping our culture and changing the living habits of individuals, the structure of organizations, and society.
