Shawn Mendes posted a six second video on the app vine in 2013, and woke up the next morning with over ten thousand followers (Biography). But many people don’t know why or how he became as popular and well known as he is now. “It was a mix of hard work and good luck” said Mendes (Hernandez). It didn’t take Shawn very long to be discovered by Andrew Gertler; Shawn's current manager, who then showed it to Island Records, who later signed Shawn in early 2014 (Biography). I chose this topic because I find it very interesting how Shawn grew to fame overnight. Shawns initial break seems to have been a lucky one, but his talent and dedication is really what got him so far. He had always helped young African Americans at some point in their lives that have had similar dreams of becoming something in life. Rap has always dominated most of the black community to assist in the expression of their feelings, emotions and situations. Single parent homes are very common in the African American Community, and J. Cole’s is also a product of this unfortunate circumstance as he writes about his life through his music. He has been fascinated by rap since he was fourteen and followed his dreams becoming Jay-Z’s
Growing up I remember my mom turning the music up whenever she heard a good song. The only genre, she listened to was country so I grew up loving country music. I now turn the music up whenever I hear a song Luke Bryan wrote because his music is so good. Growing up Luke Bryan was a normal child, but over the 20 or more years, so many devastating things have happened to his family that are hard for Bryan and his family to get over.
Hip-hop music is my favorite genre of music because the way I grew up I can relate to a lot of the things it portrays. I also enjoy R&B and gospel music because it is what listened to as a child. Some hip-hop artist I enjoy are Fabulous, Andre 3000 and T.I. because a lot of their music tells a story and gives life lessons. J Cole is my favorite hip-hop artist because he makes great music, he is a philanthropist and he uses his platform to speak and act on social issues.

Pop music has long been defined by “idols” and superstars that are subjects of high levels of adoration from severely devoted fans, whose love of these superstars often blurs the line between fandom and obsession. This love is mainly based off of physical looks and charm more often than actual musical talent, as majority of the songs written by these massive superstars are not written by the artists themselves, instead by people hired to write for these artists in a way that will best connect with a crowd willing to spend their money on these manufactured stars. Therefore, it has become evident that in the world of popular music, image has overtaken talent as the determining factor of success in the industry. Instead of skill and songwriting ability, good looks and the ability to draw large crowds of impressionable people have become the main factors of fame in music.
Shawn starts off wanting to avoid being arrested, but as time goes on, he becomes more and more elaborate with his “visions” allowing people to fall even deeper into the deception that is his psychic abilities. While Shawn may use his skills to solve crime after crime, he also tricks people into believing he is actually psychic. This makes him out to be a very ambiguous person because while he does good deeds, it also shows that he can be a very manipulative person and take people’s trust for granted. Even after taking away his cunning nature, there is still the question, does he truly want to help people, or is he doing this because it is fun and he enjoys the challenge of solving a new
