There are two systems, old system and recent system. (AD and BC are old system) whereas, (CE and BCE are recent system). The system has changed to CE and BCE because this system does not have religious meaning, and this system is accepted by all people with different religion. Whereas BC and AD system have a religious meaning Christians feel comfortable with the BC and AD system because BC system started with birth of Jesus and that is associated with Christianity, and AD states in the year of the god. BCE stands for “Before Common Era”. CE means “Common Era”. BC means “Before Christ”. AD means “Anno Domini” that means in the year of our lord. BCE and BC are the same, and refer to a time before and including the reign of Herod until the time that Jesus Christ …show more content…
was born. CE and AD refer to the time after the birth of Jesus Christ up to the present day. For example, 400BC is 400BCE, and AD2009 is 2009CE. 2 These two pictures above are a plan and an artist’s reconstruction of the Temple of Venus and Rome in Rome that is designed by Hadrian. The left picture is the plan of the Temple of Venus and Rome, and the picture on the right is the Temple of Venus and Rome. The Temple of Venus and Rome is different from ancient Roman architects. The usual ancient Roman temple has frontal columns that do not surround the temple, whereas the Temple of Venus and Rome has ten frontal columns and twenty columns along the sides. The plan of the Temple of Venus and Rome is different from ancient Roman Temple and does not match with the Roman critique for some reasons. First, the Temple of Venus and Rome is not raised above the ground, whereas the usual Roman temple is always raised above the ground. Second, it is not frontal and has one side entry. Third, the plan has two Cella, however the ancient Roman temple has one room. Fourth, it is colonnade and the construction is horizontal. For these reasons the roman do not like the plan of the Temple of Venus and Rome. 3 The order of strata started with the oldest of age is III, V, IV, II, then I. The law of Superposition states undisturbed context stratigraphic layers that lower are the older Which means the oldest layer is on the bottom of any sequences. After applying the law of superposition we recognize the lower stratum is the oldest, but stratum III is the oldest because it is disturbed, so it does not fit on the law of superposition. Then applying the superposition law the lower stratum is V, IV, II, then I. Basically V and IV cut into it. The late date for stratum III is 43CE and an unknown earliest date, the oldest stratum is (III). The evidence which shows that the latest date is 43CE comes from the knowledge of the second oldest stratum which is cut into it, which is stratum (V). This stratum (V) is dated 43CE, and it was formed from coins and glasses, which remained from this era during which they were in use. The third stratum, formed circa 60CE or 61 CE was stratum (IV) in which was found a mixture of charcoal and sand known as terra sigillata, the remaining tell tale signs of Roman soldier occupancy. Stratum (II) might have been formed between 60CE and 61CE in the earliest sense, but the latest possible time it was formed was between 90CE and 150CE.This stratum has six features labeled A23 to A29, excluding A28, and these helped in the formation of Stratum (I). Stratum I may have come into being around 150CE to 1929CE, and may have been a sheep farming site because of the sheep skeletons which were found there. Having been buried, the sheep may have been unfit for consumption. 4 This is Arretine ware Terra sigillata. (last 3rd of 1st cent. BCE to first 3rd of the 1st cent.CE) From Arezzo. This ware has a relief on it as it shown in this picture. Red to brown in color, stamp on bottom, and has decoration on it. Whereas, Impasto ware (10th – 8th Cent. BCE) it is black or grey, dull finish not shiny, and made by hand, and it has no decoration. 5 This is portrait of husband and wife. As we can see here the man is so busy for baker, so he does not have time to shave his beard, he holds papers, so that means he can read also, that means he is an educated man. He is wearing business suits toga. As we can see here the woman looks good and she wears pearl that means her husband is taking care of her by having her looks good. Also, it means they are wealthy and educated couple. The woman looks much younger than him, and she can write and she can help him in his business. The Roman gender roles are the men support the woman and bring honor to their family, and take care of their family. However, women must do a household and help their husband in their business. Women should look good in public to bring honor to family 6 A building like the pantheon was constructed in the form of a dome, from which has emerged similar structures including half-domes. At present, cathedrals and other worship buildings still use similar architecture. Numerical that use letters of the alphabet were first used in the Roman empire, and to-date Roman numbers (for example, (iv)) are still used in books and legal papers.. Wrestling matches like in the WWE Championships remind people of the Roman way of entertainment where slaves would fight to the death. 7 The message was that Hadrian embodied the deity that watched over Romus and Remulus.
The wolf is the symbol of the Rome. Therefore, his edicts were proclamations from the deities worshiped by the Romans. In addition, there is the Owl, the symbol of Athena, used as a way of showing the Grecians’ acceptance of Hadrian. The two eagles (Jupiter, the main god of the Romans) represent two wing victories that mean he always wins and he is a hero. The snake above the wolf represents Hygieia, showing that Hadrian was a person who was conscious of his health. 8 1 Pompeii: Art: Frescos from Pompeii; to appreciate the intricate details of how the frescos were made, and how long they have stayed since they were made. For example, I want to know if their colors have changed or some aspects of their colors have remained the same over time 2 Macedonia: I would like to see the Macedonian currency called the denarius, and study the various denominations to find how the presence of Romans influenced their designs. 3: art: denarius in Cyprus; to appreciate its texture, the kind of metal used, and to make an estimation of the period when it was first

The Lion symbolises royalty, the books symbolise wisdom and the golden fur and mane of the lion symbolises power (because gold is usually worn by rich people).
An analysis of Mycerinus and Kha-merer-nebty II and Augustus of Primaporta, reveals that there are many similarities, but also many differences between these two pieces of sculpture. These similarities and differences are found in the subject, style, and function of both works of art.
The Egyptians often included lions to symbolize strength, leadership, loyalty, and war. The top of the palette also includes a human face with bull horns. This was done in attempt to represent the gods the ancient Egyptians believed in. These gods are associated with power, masculinity, and fertility.
The compositions that each piece displays is different and prestige in its own right. Flemish panel painters were largely influential and created extraordinary developments in composition. The artwork tends to be very detailed and filled with symbolic meanings from surrounding objects or even coloring. Jan van Eyck was especially credited for paying exceptional attention to detail that creates such a realistic form, the figures seem lifelike. Much of this realistic appearance is due to the medium that was widely used in the North. The use of oil paints and techniques, such as finer detail with smaller brush strokes and layering of oil paints to create a glaze, were used and developed giving the Northern art distinct characteristics and composition. Italian painters created frescos by applying pigments to wet plaster. The result is a dull, flatter color and they were unable to achieve intricate detail. The com...
This paper will employ a close visual analysis of the White-Ground Lekythos, which is attributed to the Reed Painter circa 450-400 B.C.E. on ceramic with paint.
Overall, the six pieces of jewelry in this set shows that Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome took a lot of pride and effort in their jewelry. The jewelry was continuously changing to become more complex as time went by. All of the jewelry was made by using the most innovative techniques of their own time period and by using metals and gemstones valued in each

Roman vs. Greek Civilization Although both Roman and Greek civilizations shared similarities in the areas of art and literature, their differences were many and prominent. Their contrasting aspects rest mainly upon political systems and engineering progress, but there are also several small discrepancies that distinguish between these two societies. This essay will examine these differences and explain why, ultimately, Rome was the more advanced civilization of the two. Greece, originally ruled by an oligarchy ("rule of the few"), operated under the premise that those selected to rule were selected based not upon birth but instead upon wealth.
The works of art from the Archaic Period, Classical Period, and Hellenic Period developed physically and mentally, and the study of their aesthetic differences from period to period allow for a decided contrast and comparability. This interpretation has had a profound effect on the art world and that continues even in today’s world. The importance of Greek sculptures is evident in the storytelling of the gods, the people, and the culture. We use these sculptures as a tool to go back into the past of the Greek people, letting us admire how far mankind has truly come, whether it is in art or intelligence. Generation after generation has been and will continue to be able to see for themselves the society, culture and uniqueness of these periods through the wonderful sculptures that came out of ancient
Furthermore, the animals held an important part in the religious beliefs of the Celts. For example, the hare thought to bring good fortune. “Swans in particular, if portrayed wearing gold or silver chains were supernatural, often Gods in bird form.” (Pierce Online) The Raven which were “ special favorites as messengers of the gods and their calls were considered prophetic.” (Pierce Online). The boar was perfect example, which illustrated the strength and power of the Celts. The fish symbolized clairvoyance and the serpent signified the divine wisdom.

Additionally, the styles changed; from Rococo, which was meant to represent the aristocratic power and the “style that (…) and ignored the lower classes” (Cullen), to Neoclassicism, which had a special emphasis on the Roman civilization’s virtues, and also to Romanticism, which performs a celebration of the individual and of freedom. Obviously, also the subject matter that inspired the paintings has changed as wel...
