We constantly watch movies derived from novels and sometimes they are either a hit or complete miss. The basis of a story does not change much from the novel to the big screen, however smaller components of a story are altered before production. This is demonstrated in “No Country for Old Men” by Cormac McCarthy in which symbol, character and theme are changed in the film for a more cinematic appeal at the cost of greater character and plot development.

The scene in the movie where Chigurh and the store clerk exchange words, ultimately resulting in Chigurh asking the man to flip a coin. The man does not know the stakes of the coin toss, but judging from the cadence in Chigurh’s voice the man is hesitant to choose the outcome. The tension within this seen in the movie is a practical take on the novel, while later when it is done with Carla the scene loses it dramatic pull due to the causality of the encounter. In the novel the reader is given the freedom to infer the amount of tension of an even, while in a movie the director gets to make the call as to how a scene should be dramatized. The coin symbolizes the satisfaction of Chigurh’s killing to the extent he makes it a game. The symbol is also used to further develop Chigurh’s unsympathetic nature.
Moreover, another symbol not fully explained in the movie but imperative to understanding the characters of the novel is the part of the in which Officer Bell stops to move the dead bird out of the road. The only real way to truly understand a story is to understand all aspects of a story and their meanings. The same goes for movies, as they are all just stories being acted out. In Thomas Foster's book, “How to Read Literature Like a Professor”, Foster explains in detail the numerous ingredients of a story. He discusses almost everything that can be found in any given piece of literature. The devices discussed in Foster's book can be found in most movies as well, including in Quentin Tarantino’s cult classic, “Pulp Fiction”. This movie is a complicated tale that follows numerous characters involved in intertwining stories. Tarantino utilizes many devices to make “Pulp Fiction” into an excellent film. In this essay, I will demonstrate how several literary devices described in Foster's book are put to use in Tarantino’s film, “Pulp Fiction”, including quests, archetypes, food, and violence.
Many novels are transcribed from their original texts to films. Some of the movies are similar to the original plots, others do not follow the authors work. Alice Hoffman’s novel Practical Magic is altered when it is made into a movie; and Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible which was also made into a movie, was extremely similar to his original writing. There are multiple variables that account for how a movie is made some of them include; the amount of income, how much can be changed, and the author’s approval. The two recreations previously mentioned, have two completely different outcomes, the results all depend on the amount of creative licensing the movie company has.
In conclusion, details involving the characters and symbolic meanings to objects are the factors that make the novel better than the movie. Leaving out aspects of the novel limits the viewer’s appreciation for the story. One may favor the film over the novel or vice versa, but that person will not overlook the intense work that went into the making of both. The film and novel have their similarities and differences, but both effectively communicate their meaning to the public.
