I chose to write about the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the families behind it because of my own family’s connection to the Patrol. Before my brother went into the force, I never paid much attention to Ohio State Highway Patrolmen. I did not know what they did besides give out traffic tickets, and I feel that many others in society have the same basic knowledge I once had. Now that I have a close family member involved in the Ohio State Patrol, I have come to realize that they do some much more than that, and they deserved to be recognized for it.
After researching, I found that the Ohio State Patrol has a short and fascinating history, so I chose to include some historical elements in my writings. I also found that throughout time, men in the Ohio State Highway Patrol have relied on a strong family foundation to support them. In talking to my sister-in-law, I found that the people the troopers leave behind at home while they go out on the field, also carry a significant burden and play an important role in their jobs. I wanted my project to be all-inclusive, completely capturing what it means to be a part of the Ohio State Patrol, so I included small pieces of what an officer’s home life is like.

I wanted express the lives of Troopers and their wives in multiple different ways throughout time. Ultimately, I focused on the women’s voices through expression of their devotion to their troopers on the field and decided to focus on the men’s commitment to their job by exemplifying their mindset through pieces about their careers. Some information I included in my fiction piece was embellished because the State Trooper I interviewed did not feel comfortable releasing all the information I desired.
