Odwalla Juice Recall Crisis Discussion Questions: 1. What should the company do regarding the following specific issues? a. Should the company recall all of its fresh apple juice, just those batches considered potentially contaminated, or not recall any of the product? I think Odwalla should recall all of its fresh apple juice in order to prevent consumers from having to worry about purchasing the product and getting contaminated. Until the problem is solved fresh apple juice should not be distributed. b. Should the company admit responsibility immediately? If so, then why? If not, the why not? Yes the company should admit responsibility as soon as they are certain that the crisis has occurred so that people see that they are serious and willing to do as much as they can. c. How should the company address media interviews? What should be said and what should not be said? The company should be honest and acknowledge that they have made a mistake. On all interviews the company should express sympathy and regret for those affected and immediately promise that the company will pay all medical costs associated with the crisis. The company should also say the latest news on the crisis and ensure the public that the company has a handle on the problem. I think this unfortunate circumstance has made organizations look close into the products and services they offer. No one wants to clean up a mess that could be easily avoided. Even if they do it as a marketing plan that was found out by the public, it would prove to bring about a negative view of the firm. Also, I think it also stresses how companies influence society and how important it is for them to be responsible.

The ability of a company to maintain a good reputation is directly linked to the company’s ability to retain its stakeholders (Peterson, 2005). During a negative event or crisis situation, a company needs to ensure that it has effective strategies and resources in place, to deal with it responsibly, efficiently to minimize losses in share price value and public perceptions of corporate reputation (Coldwell .D, Joosub .T, & Papageorgiou .E, 2012). It is always advantageous to analyze past crises in order to develop a conceptual understanding of crisis situations and appropriateness of various means of coping with them (STERN, E. K., pg.1, 2009).

There are many definitions for what is considered to be a crisis. Alan Jay Zaremba, author of the textbook ”Organizational Communication,” combines several definitions of the word to conclude that a crisis is “an incident that occurs unexpectedly, could damage an organization’s reputation, values, and/or performance, and requires effective communication. (Zaremba, 2010) In the case of the Nuance Group, their current situation completely blindsided the organization, was a nightmare for their reputation, and communication was now the key element in restoring their image. This could mean putting a dysphagia patient at a higher risk of complications such as aspiration pneumonia. “Aspiration of an overly thickened fluid can increase the risk of pneumonia, as it is difficult to clear the airway” (Garcia & Chambers, 2010). “One primary concern of over-using thickened liquids is the risk of dehydration” (Sura, Madhavan, Carnaby & Crary, 2012.) Compliance of patients with thickened liquids is often reduced. The communication process is not something that begins when a crisis rears its ugly head rather it is a process that takes place in preparing for a crisis before it happens. While the term crisis represents a blanket term used to describe many situations, each situation is unique, thus presenting different obstacles to overcome. However, with a well-established advanced plan in place an organization places itself in a position to overcome and work around obstacles. The development of a comprehensive crisis management plan is one achieved through effective communication where each member of the crisis management team has an advanced shared understanding of his or her role and responsibility during a time of crisis (du Pr'e, 2005).
