Occupational Health can be related to everyone in individuals’ lives. Occupational Health refers to identifying physical, chemical hazards that are present in the workplace in order to create a safer work environment for individuals (Friis, 2006). Diseases that come from injuries in the workplace are called Occupational Diseases. Occupational Diseases are the outcomes of exposure to general conditions or specific hazards from the work environment. The health hazards in the work place can cause possible risks through toxic chemicals, fumes and dusts, high noise levels, ionizing & nonionizing radiation, high temperatures, biohazards and stress which can be classified under psychological & social hazards (Friis, 2006).The significance and goal for occupational health is to create a safe environment for individuals in the workplace and to protect coworkers, family members, employers, customers and the community in general. Many prominent individuals contributed to occupational health. During the Greek and Roman age, there was an acknowledgment of the risks and hazards in occupational health. The prominent individual that contributed to occupational health were Pliny the Elder, Hippocrates, Galen, Rhazes, Agricola, Paraccelsus, Bernardino Ramazzini, Sir Percival Pott, Irving Selikoff and Dr. Alice Hamilton(Friis, 2006).The founder of occupational health, Bernardino Ramazzini, he describes the hazardous effect of certain jobs. He explains these hazardous in his work, De Morbis Artificum Diatriba, during the 1700s (Felton, 1997). De Morbis Artificum Diatriba pointed out the threats posed by hazardous chemicals, dusts and metals used in the workplace (Friis, 2006). On July 13, 1900 Joseph Aschs’ new building plans in New York City are approved and by January 5, 1901 the building is complete. In 1906, the eighth floor of the Asch building is bought by the Triangle Shirtwaist Company who opens a factory there. Even before it happen, the Forward predicted the terrible disaster of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory that occurred one year, one month, and seventeen days later (86). The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire is a turning point in history because, unions gained powerful alliances and people who wanted to fight for their safety. This needs to be communicated to all employees and employees will know the hazards that exist to prevent injuries (Bernardin & Russell, 2013). The plan can involve management where they can be in charge of the program, and they can train employees on hoe to follow and report hazards to their immediate supervisor. Evaluate workplace conditions by conducting a survey on equipment, materials, machinery, and daily operations (Bernardin & Russell, 2013). Then evaluate current illness and injuries within the organization. Then develop and action plan and keep reviewing it to see if it is working. Communicate with employees and it is important that they know how the injury and illness plan works. It may be beneficial to designate someone to monitor the programs progress.

Saturday seems like the perfect day to unwind, but not to the women at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company. They tediously spent 7 days a week bent over an overheating, run-down sewing machine for 13 hours; producing shirtwaists for the city’s population. What everyone expected had occurred. A fire set ablaze on the eighth floor, engulfing the room at an expeditious rate. In a matter of fifteen minutes, 146 women had died. Their skin had been charred by the flames; peeling off to expose their vulnerable skeleton. On March 25th, 1911, workers in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory thought it would just be another long day at work. Little did 146 of them know that it would be their last day earning little pay in the dreadful place. Near the end of the workday, a fire broke out on the 8th floor of the factory. Many workers could not escape due to the locked exits and stairwells, which resulted in many people jumping to their death. Like any factory in the 1900s, the experiences and conditions working at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory were not appealing to the many who immigrated to the United States, but it was necessary to earn money. In Triangle: The Fire That Changed America, David Von Drehle tells about the immigrant workers experience at the factory, challenges and dangers of industrialization, workers demands for a union, and the relationship between labor and government as a result of the fire.
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in Manhattan, New York City on March 25, 1911 was one of the deadliest industrial disasters in the history of the city, and resulted in the fourth highest loss of life from an industrial accident in U.S. history. Triangle Waist Company was one of the largest blouse makers in New York City. They specialized in making shirtwaists, the very popular women's blouse that had a tight waist and puffy sleeves. Approximately 500 people, mostly immigrant women, worked at the Triangle Waist Company's factory, in the Asch Building. They worked long hours, six days a week, in cramped quarters and were paid low wages. Many of the workers were young, some only age 13 or 14. The source of this fire was due to a lit cigarette on the ninth floor. The women on the ninth floor were not able to escape. The exit doors were locked, and the owners on the tenth floor were able to escape. One recalled, the clawed nails of the women being trapped. The large number of deaths exposed the dangerous conditions in high-rise factories prompted the creation of new building, fire, and safety codes around the United States. A hazard is defined as an activity or object that has the potential to cause harm if contact is made with the person, object or activity (MHS, 1996; Harmse, 2007; HSE, 2006). These hazards in a work place need to be identified and dealt with accordingly to prevent any harm to employees or any individual acquainted to a certain activity or establishment. The key roles and principles of occupational hygiene are Anticipation, Identification, Evaluation and Control (Schoeman and van den Heever, 2014; Harmse, 2008; SAMTRAC, 2012). To practise in accordance to the above principle; a hazard identification and risk assessment needs to be conducted. Anticipation is the foreseeing of the activity
