“The representation of women in society, especially through mass media has been the most delusional act...on the grounds of human existence”, said Abhijit Naskar. Media has led to a misconstrued perception of women. The presence of media has sexually objectified women, portrayed them to be weak, and has pressured conformity. Views towards women have been distorted by the media in many ways. One distinct example is sexual objectification; the blatant usage of women for the sole purpose of sex appeal. The media is notorious for using women sporting skimpy clothing or using seductive mannerisms as a means to entice consumers, even when the model has nothing to do with the thing being sold, whatsoever. In the music industry, women are used as extras in music videos where they are shown to be nothing more than shiny props. Obviously, this is degrading on so many levels, and will only encourage the mindset that women are not of high worth for anything except for their bodies. Another view of women that is very commonly held is that women are weaker than men. Withal, the media has only amplified these beliefs. As a male may be presented to be a hardworking family man or breadwinner, a female is more typically shown in the role of a passive housewife. But what …show more content…

One primary argument may be that the showcasing of women’s bodies is no more than a promotion of body positivity and self-confidence. When women are shown to be weak or passive it may just be used as a means of satire, or is a way to inspire women to break the status quo and search for the independence that others do not have. Additionally, some believe that media doesn’t set expectations for women, but instead wants to highlight individuality and help people find the beauty within themselves.
