My client for this design was John Sutton, CEO and founder of ‘Oakland Landscaping’. John established his landscape design business in 2000 and in the past 17 years has been able to grow the business to be competitive with other landscaping design businesses. The brands recent uprise is due to the publicity in the magazine ‘Australian House & Garden’. Due to this recent publicity the businesses has had an influx of new clients and larger jobs leading to them needing to employee more staff to keep up with this demand. The office building they have been inhabiting was in the heart of the Melbourne CBD but is no longer suitable as it is too small and cramped for a growing business. This lead to their first request. ‘Oakland Landscaping’ requested plans for a brand new, modern building which would be used as the main office of the company. The building had to be built on the property of 43 Riversdale Rd, Hawthorn and be sustainable and cost effective to run. It had to also include a waiting room and consultation rooms. John also mentioned he wanted open workspaces in order to promote creativity and teamwork. He asked that the design be presented in the format of floorplans, elevations and a 3-dimensional model which would be shown to the company’s ‘Board of Management’ for final approval. second request was for a way to promote an open day for the new building. The open day was to be held on the 23rd of December 2020 after the completion of the building. The promotional material also had to have ties to landscaping as a profession. Through the design process the choice of an invite and a flyer were decided as the promotional materials.
This decision was made after looking into many different categories of promotional materials and referring back to the brief as to which would be the best fit as seen on this page. The decision on where the materials were to be handed out was also decided through the brief via a survey. The results of the survey showed that the majority of the business target audience, consisting of prospective clients, were located in a 25km proximity of the Melbourne CBD as seen on this page. This is how the decision was made on where the promotional materials would be
distributed. Another constraint that the client asked for was that the ‘Oakland Landscaping’ logo was to be featured on all promotional materials. The promotional material also had to be cost effective and eye catching. The designs intended to promote their business and bring in prospective clients. With all the design brief and all its components including purpose, context, constraints, expectations, audience and proposed presentation format I carried out the design process which resulted in these final products.
Once the target market has been identified it is important to develop a marketing strategy. In today's fast paced, information overloaded society; conveying a message about a product seems to be more difficult than ever. The consumer is bombarded with advertising everywhere they look. Today advertising not only exists on television, radio, magazines, and newspapers, it can be found on billboards, park benches, in our mailboxes, on buses, taxis, at sporting events, and on clothing.
The quality of any water sources is imperative to every creature in the ecosystem due it being vital to survival. For example, humans can’t go without water for a few days while can survive for days without food. Hence protecting water sources is imperative. Lake Merritt is a tidal lagoon in the center of Oakland California, a refuge for animals. Lake Merritt was created by Dr. Samuel Merritt, the Mayor of Oakland, who at that time owned a majority of the properties near the shorelines of the lagoon ("A Brief History"). He proposed to construct a dam to manipulate the flow of the water to enable the water level inland to rise, thus turning the lagoon into a lake. Sewages and storm drains were later directed into the lake, thus the condition of the lake reflects the community level of pollution within the ecosystem. Throughout the years, Lake Merritt has deteriorated and still is due to the pollution and the stagnant state of the water. The pungent stench releases during the drought seasons and the summer’s heat cause the lake once beautify state to decline. However, in November 2002, Oakland voters approved a $198 million dollar bond measure to fund restoration and clean water projects throughout the city. A total of $115 million was allocated for Lake Merritt’s restoration (Miller). However, there are critics conveying the misused of funds and that Oakland can’t afford to fund this project. The enormous loan from the projects will have to be pay off from the people of Oakland through higher charge for public services and tax’ rates. With the restoration project, not only will the stench of the lake be resolve, but the ecosystem around the lake will have major improvements. The constant influx o...

I live in the Northeast, in southern New England to be exact. We are trying real hard to get the Eco-Friendly thing right, so this year we have decided to let our landscaping company go and do it all ourselves! Here are some of the things that we have implemented into our green landscaping since January 2008. We are allowing native plants and ground covers to spread into our Lawn. It is a big step in going green and one that I admit I've had to get accustomed to. I am used to having crisp edges and clean lines around our planting beds and landscaping, this is a big change, but I already like the result. This is a step that is worth considering when starting a new project because materials such as stone, timber and gravel have to be sourced
