Stress is often linked with affecting many internal and external aspects of our lives. We often associate the phrase ‘one thing led to another’ with stress as this is often the case. It can lead to us leading unhealthy lifestyles, and unhealthy eating is at the core of this. Whether we eat too much or too little, it is still defined as unhealthy. The definition of health is ‘A state of complete physical, social and mental well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’ In order to maintain a complete state of health we need to focus on our nutrition or what we put in to our mouths on a daily basis. Whether we chose to pour our stress levels in to eating too much, or too little- both can lead to worryingly dangerous consequences, putting our bodies under even more physical stress.
Particular foods are crucial for our bodies, and enable us to maintain a balanced diet and these are fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains (Olphin/Hesson, 2007).
People regularly associate eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia with external or internal stressors in their lives. Whether it is a job, school or even their perception of themselves, it is easy to pour emotions in to a simple action such as eating. When our bodies experience an acute stress and our body initiates the fight or flight response, our appetites are suppressed (Torres, 2007). When people think of stress eating, they tend to affiliate it with over eating, or ‘comfort eating’ as some refer to it as. Eating things we like releases a chemical called dopamine in our body, meaning that you can become almost addicted to that feeling, without realising the effect it may be having on our body; before it’s too late (Olphin/Hesson, 2007). It is crucial that children are taught at a young age the importance of having a healthy balanced diet and the effect it can have on their bodies so that when particular stressors in life become a problem, they are able to deal with them in a safe and sensible manner.

It is apparent that living an unhealthy lifestyle, as well as eating poorly, negatively affects one’s health. From a young age it is quickly learned which foods are considered healthful as opposed to junk food. It is a parents responsibility to supervise the intake of their child's food, however there is a higher risk than ever before of childhood obesity.
Binge Eating Disorder also known as Compulsive Eating Disorder, is a disorder in which a person uses food to deal with their stress and other negative emotions. A person affected from Binge Eating Disorder will secretly and compulsively overeat large amounts of food even if they were not hungry at all. During a Bingeing Episode, it could last several hours or all day, and can be reoccurring several times in one week. Often the foods that are consumed are “comfort foods” such as cookies, chips, candy, etc. Aside from the disorder there are its symptoms, who is affected, age of onset, causes, potential treatment methodology, and several resources for help. The children range in age from 12-15 and their issues from simple obesity to needing gastric-bypass surgery. The children are fed fast food in school cafeterias, with government labeling of pizza, fries and tomato paste as vegetables. Stores have candies and snacks at children’s eye level, and at home they eat the standard offerings of processed foods. One of the other things this film shows is the complete lack of support for these families in the area of proper diet education. Chronic stress may be a factor in cases of heart disease and obesity. Due to the type of hormones in the body being released or restricted Cholesterol levels have been known to increase in individuals with chronic stress. A person’s relationship with food can increase their chances of heart disease and obesity. When people are experiencing high levels of stress they may use food as a way to feel satisfied temporarily- whether they are hungry or not.

There are, however, some easy guidelines to follow to ensure one will stay on a healthy track. What can I eat and what can I not eat? First, cut out all fats from fatty foods, fried foods, butter, cream, and oils. Saturated fat cut down is important in order to have a healthy heart. Keeping carbohydrates in one’s diet is essential. Carbohydrates are the sugars, starches, and fibers found in fruits, grains, vegetables, and milk products. Good carbohydrates are; sweet potatoes, brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat pasta/bread, beans, etc. Carbohydrates are one of the three food groups that are essential in every meal. The next essential food group is protein. Protein is designed to repair skin, hair, nails, but most importantly, gain muscle! Some lean meats include; tuna, ground beef, ground turkey, grilled chicken breast, crab, shrimp, and more. Though eggs are not a meat, egg whites are an excellent source of protein. The last important food group to include in every meal is fat. Yes, fat! It may sound crazy, but fats actually drive our anabolic hormones and allow us to gain muscle and lose fat. Since we have been learning about nutrition in class, our task was to record a food log. Nutrition requires a well-balanced diet containing nutrient and vitamins like amino acids and fatty acids. Over the past seven days I have been recording and have been looking very carefully at my intake of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and fats. In our task, the objective was to record the basic foods we ate during the period of seven, but it did not require recording every single detail or our intake of food. Doing this food log was a pain and it was disturbing because I never wrote about what I ate like breakfast, lunch, dinner, or additional meals. I found this food log useful because it helped me learn what I can change in my intake of foods to make my diet healthy and to see what about my diet is affecting me from being healthy because I could affect me in the future.
That leads to the children adopting the lifestyle to their adulthood stage of life, making the world to be full of obese and overweight unhealthy individuals prone to many diseases (FamilyDoctor.org). The schools should have healthy diet menus to have mentally alert students who are excellent in their academic work without depression and anxiety to avoid cases of school strikes and dropouts which are in association with the poor eating habits. For the students to participate in sports fully and to determine their talents, there should be no junk foods in schools for them to be strong without complications related to severe eating such as weak bones which can hinder them from taking part in sports. Lastly for the parents not to spend so much money on their children’s food, the schools should provide the healthy diet which is cheaper and its consumption is not frequent, unlike the junk whose serving is at any time leading to
Childhood obesity is a health problem that is becoming increasingly prevalent in society’s youth. For a number of years, children across the nation have become accustomed to occasionally participating in physical activities and regularly snacking on sugary treats. In result of these tendencies, approximately one third of American children are currently overweight or obese (Goodwin). These grim statistics effectively represent all the lack of adult interference, in regards to health, has done to the youth of America. The habits of over consuming foods and under participating in physical activities are all too common in the children of today. Children cannot solve this issue alone, though. These young people need to essentially be given the opportunities to make positive health decisions and learn about good, nutritional values.
A child’s proper growth depends greatly on their nutrition and health. A healthy diet is essential to the developing child. Food should never be used to reward, punish, or bribe a child. Instead children should have three healthy meals with snacks in between. It is also important for children to have good self care behaviors (including bathing, washing hands, brushing teeth), and adequate sleep.
I chose this topic because more and more people are starting to eat unhealthy. This paper is showing awareness of eating unhealthy over time.
