Government date shows that in the past thirty years, rate of being overweight in six to eleven year olds is up 19% and 6% in age 12 to 19. Without support, school lunches remain high in fat. (Finkelstien) According to the CDCP, obesity is double what it was in children and triple in adolescents since 1980. Many reforms were attempted to help this problem, but many inadvertently caused more problems. Americans eat entirely too much. And the foods we are consuming are not at all healthy, they contain excessive amounts of salt, sugar, saturated fat, carbohydrates, etc. This over eating is not only a severe problem in the adult population but also in America’s children as well. Results from a study performed by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association showed that 1 to 2 year olds get 30 percent more of the 950 calories they require a day. It has also been found that another contributing factor to most children’s bad eating habits is the fact that they either rarely or never consume vegetables and fruit. Besides the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables children are consuming large amounts of sugar. Wether it be in candy or desserts, soda or sugary fruit juices children are beginning to consume these at very early ages. Results from another study performed by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that infants are drinking soda out of baby bottles as early as 7 months of age. In response to these disturbing facts Parents magazine published the preceding article. It outlines 10 steps that can be taken to
Schools should educate children about what they consume from what they offer children for breakfast and lunch. “With many schools districts facing budget shortfalls, a quick solution has come from offering more profitable fast food” (Barboza 17). In order to keep their jobs schools shouldn’t directly turn to fast food. It shouldn’t be the job of schools to decide what is fed to the children but the parents job to help decide what is best to feed their children, since the children do not know what is best for them. Money shouldn’t always be the reason that school turn to fast food companies for help. The school should receive help from it’s community so the children who go their have a place they can go and receive good quality information. “Schools get paid a kickback for every sugary soft drink or burger sold” (Barboza 24). Children usually apply what they learn from school to the real world because thats what they are taught to do. Kids who learn at school that junk food and fast food is ok so serve at breakfast and lunch will think its ok for them to eat it whenever they are not at school. In conclusion schools shouldn’t teach kids thats its ok to eat junk food and fast food by what they serve for breakfast or lunch they should be offering kids a way to better their life when at school and not at school. Today, we face the problem of getting kids to make healthy choices in their diet. Students spend about half of their day in school eating breakfast and lunch. That’s why it is important to put healthy foods in their lunch. Although, students complain about not being able to consume sugary drinks or sweets it is for the best. They don’t see that many kids who struggle with obesity or being overweight are regretting not making better choices in the past. If we want kids to be more active and healthy we have to convince them by banning candy and soda.
Usually most of the students in the school will eat a lot if they are older. The younger kids will most likely eat a little less, but sometimes it’s pretty close. The biggest downside that the students do not like at all is how they are served the healthier food. Due to this the kids have no interest in eating any of it, by having healthy food these children are not receiving enough food to eat. Since they won’t try it or they have, and either the kids don’t like it, or may be allergic or feel sick from something
Now, some students are underweight and can control what they eat, but others can't. That is not healthy. Healthier foods would help the students focus more, be more energetic and not feel so tired all the time. If the school menu changes to a healthier one then students would become healthy.
These unhealthy food will cause riots protest and chaos in the world. The community and parent need to change to help the children's diet in the schools. There are overwhelmly to many obese children because of school lunch menu. As a means to make more money to avoid falling into debt, convenience foods are sold next to the healthy foods. The president of the School Nutrition Association, Katie Wilson, states “ Schools can either provide only healthy foods and go into debt, or allow unhealthy options… a contributing factor to weight gain. ”(Bornstein 2.) From low test scores and bad lunches national and local groups have set a new standard in the school cafeterias for the students to eat healthy foods and staying active to benefit their body throughout school and outside of school. With these goals set it will make a difference in the students and the school. Throughout my research I have found out how healthy lunches are very beneficial to our bodies and to our brains during a long school day and also outside of school. I’ve learned that eating healthy will limit our hunger during the day and that it will also help your brain work faster during test causing school scores to rise. Also, these standards have lowered the percentage of child obesity.
The deaths exceed thousands each year, almost as many as million lives, and behind this serious issue, there is a simple solution; the solution is school foods. I, and many others, extremely disagree with the current filthiness of school foods that are provided regularly; therefore, the food conditions must be improved.
Have you ever tasted school cafeteria food? I don’t think you would want to. In school story books, do you have characters saying that the food tasted good at school cafeterias? Nope. Why is this? Cafeteria food is often cheap, bought in bulk, high in calories, malnutritious, and microwaved. Student polls and opinions prove this. Therefore, this leads to a suggestion: Healthier, tastier foods and a better, advanced lunch system should be implemented.
Regulating diets in the school systems and educational facilities of America are absolutely crucial to the development of a great nation. If a stricter restrictive boundary was adopted in the school districts of America, students would be forced to eat healthy, and not have an option to eat bad in or out of school. A limit of caloric intake of drastically lower proportions, but with proper nutrition and a customized meal plan to reach the proper calorie maximum, would be beneficial to our students in America. As youth develops a sense of self control and self discipline, a restrictive but nutritious diet would be absolutely beneficial to
This can lead to making unhealthy choices in their future with regard to snacks and meals.” This is very important, because when kids have the opportunity to eat these unhealthy things, it makes them want them more often. For example, when a kid has pizza for lunch at school and it’s really good, they want pizza again and again. They become almost addicted to pizza. Next, when a student has a burger at school, they think that it is perfectly fine to have a burger a lot because it is what the so called “healthy” lunch program is serving. They then make unhealthy decisions when they get into college because this is what they were taught to eat. Not only are we serving these meals to high schoolers and older kids, but we are serving it to kids, including kindergarteners that cannot make their own decisions. They are just taught their whole k-3 years that hamburgers, soda, ice cream everyday, and pizza is normal and not unhealthy at all. They grow up that way and there is no one to teach them otherwise. Then, the whole generation grows up eating unhealthy junk and ends up looking like the fat people from the disney movie “Wall.E” by Andrew Stanton, and Jim Reardon. Therefore, students should be served healthier choices, so that they want to make healthier food choices in the
