In an essay titled “Concerning Spiritualism and Materialism”, Ludwig Andreas Feuerbach wrote: “Der Mensch ist, was er ißt." This translates into English as “man is what he eats” (You Are What 1). When it comes down to it, this quote is true. Having outstanding nutrition will determine how one’s body functions and how they feel mentally and physically. As for me, when I eat poorly, I feel like I have cheated myself and threw my daily workout out the window. This could be a mental thing, considering I am still young and I am not going to gain weight after one bad meal. I do, however, gain a sense of disappointment because I know I could have avoided fueling my body with unhealthy food. One can relate their body to a car; it needs the right fuel, …show more content…
Maintaining a healthy diet has many positives that go along with it. Like me, when I eat healthy, I feel more energized and more motivated to accomplish everyday tasks. Though feeling fit and motivated is important, for some, the main concern is their appearance, which is normal; but they do not understand that nutrition is the main contributor to weight lose. By eating clean, one will become the desired shape they strive for. As gym owner and personal trainer, Joe Howard, says, “Abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym.” This goes to show that even if one goes to the gym and pushes themselves to the limit, they will not end up with their desired figure if they do not eat healthy. Other than appearance, there are many positives that come from eating healthy. In an article about why proper nutrition is important, Case Western University lists many positives such as; the delay of aging, boosting of the immune system, limit tiredness and fatigue, and even enhance one’s ability to concentrate and alter mood (Why is Proper 1). These are just some of the rewards from eating clean. In order to maintain these benefits, it is important to understand what to fuel one’s body with and the reasoning behind …show more content…
There are, however, some easy guidelines to follow to ensure one will stay on a healthy track. What can I eat and what can I not eat? First, cut out all fats from fatty foods, fried foods, butter, cream, and oils. Saturated fat cut down is important in order to have a healthy heart. Keeping carbohydrates in one’s diet is essential. Carbohydrates are the sugars, starches, and fibers found in fruits, grains, vegetables, and milk products. Good carbohydrates are; sweet potatoes, brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat pasta/bread, beans, etc. Carbohydrates are one of the three food groups that are essential in every meal. The next essential food group is protein. Protein is designed to repair skin, hair, nails, but most importantly, gain muscle! Some lean meats include; tuna, ground beef, ground turkey, grilled chicken breast, crab, shrimp, and more. Though eggs are not a meat, egg whites are an excellent source of protein. The last important food group to include in every meal is fat. Yes, fat! It may sound crazy, but fats actually drive our anabolic hormones and allow us to gain muscle and lose fat. Though people think of cake and candy bars when they think of fats, but there are some healthy fats, such as; avocados, almonds, olive oil, and natural peanut butter. Joe Howard in the “90 Day Ripped Body Challenge,” explains the importance of understanding nutrition. Howard
Eating the pizza instead of the salad seemed like a good idea at the time, but now one is stuck in this sloth like state hours later. It seems letting cravings control what and how to eat is not the best strategy to healthy living. Mary Maxfield, in her article “Food For Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Food” discusses her views on how people should eat. She believes people crave what their bodies need, therefore, people should eat what they crave. Maxfield claims that diet, health, and weight are not correlated with each other, and because of this, people view obesity as unhealthy, thus forcing them to distinguish “right, healthy” foods from the “wrong, unhealthy” choices.
Nutritionism and Today’s Diet Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Pollan presents a strong case pointing out the many flaws and problems that have risen over the years of following scientific studies and government related warnings on the proper amount of nutrients needed for a healthy diet. Pollan’s main point is introducing science into our food system has had more of a negative impact than a positive one, we should go back to eating more of a traditional diet. I believe food science has given us
Nutritionism is an ideology that believes that the nutrients in foods are the key to understanding them. Nutritionism believers are so focused on the nutrients that food contains that they forget about all other aspects of food. The problem is that consumers rely on packaging to tell them what nutrients a food provides, since nutrients cannot be obviously seen, and they rely on science to tell us what nutrients are good and which are “evil”.
Education plays a dominant role in the lives of students all over the United States. Since most students spend roughly eight to twelve hours in school, it is important to make sure that they are provided with a healthy and nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack.
In order to perform at peak potential an athlete must fuel their body with nutritious foods. Proteins, carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables; these three-core food groups fuel a winning athlete. Proteins help build, teeth, bones and muscles, and create enzymes, red blood cells, long-term energy, as well, boost the immune system. Its functions are the most diverse of any food group. Protein consists of combinations of structures called amino acids that combine in various ways to make muscles, bone and tissues. They serve other functions as well including nutrient transportation and enzyme production for overall health beneficence. Adequate, regular protein intake is essential because the body does not easily store it. Various foods supply protein in different amounts with the highest quantaty coming mostly from animal products such as meat, fish, and eggs.
Since we have been learning about nutrition in class, our task was to record a food log. Nutrition requires a well-balanced diet containing nutrient and vitamins like amino acids and fatty acids. Over the past seven days I have been recording and have been looking very carefully at my intake of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and fats. In our task, the objective was to record the basic foods we ate during the period of seven, but it did not require recording every single detail or our intake of food. Doing this food log was a pain and it was disturbing because I never wrote about what I ate like breakfast, lunch, dinner, or additional meals. I found this food log useful because it helped me learn what I can change in my intake of foods to make my diet healthy and to see what about my diet is affecting me from being healthy because I could affect me in the future.
Nutrition is an important key to learn and understand in your life while you get older. Many people do not know the proper diet and exercise to keep their body healthy and strong. Throughout this course, I have learned information on different kinds of vitamins, carbohydrates, amino acids and other helpful diets. After reading and logging my dietary log for a week it has helped me re-organize my diet and health. I have learned about how to personally manage my exercise and diet and I am seeing some good results because of what I learned from this class. I started to see what I was missing in my diet and started to know what quantity and quality was for your diet. I also took a leap into my family health history to see what I need to change
A Family and Consumer Sciences course that I plan to teach is Foods and Nutrition to high school students.
Many people have trouble understanding what a healthy lifestyle is. They often picture endless hours in the gym and being on a crazy liquid diet. Others may think they can spend an hour doing a hard workout and then go eat whatever they want because “they workout”. Once balance is found a healthy lifestyle becomes easy. Understanding the difference between balance and being strict and obsessive about what you eat and when you work out is key. Some have an extremely hard time learning a balance. If they eat junk food, they feel guilty. If they miss a workout, they feel guilty. The truth is, junk food and rest days are great in moderation. Find a balance will help them feel much happier, healthier and even see more physical results. Getting an ideal physique is simply, 80% diet and 20% exercise. The best thing to do is eat healthy, well portioned meals at least five days a week. Then allow one or two days of eating more relaxed foods in moderation without any guilt. If one has a few cheat meals, or in other words, foods that aren’t very healthy, are not going to make them “fat” or gain weight. Especially if they are also working hard in the gym five to six days a week.
There is a relationship between food and exercise and people do not understand that. Everyone needs food in order for their body to work properly and do their daily activities, especially exercising. Without good nutrition, one will not be able to exercise effectively. To exercise effectively, one need the right caloric intake, energy, and nutrients in one’s body. The human body needs have carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water to fuel it up, just like the car needs gas to run. Everyone should fuel their body with right foods so that they can maintain their energy levels. Bananas and lean white meats are examples of excellent sources of natural energy that can help the function properly and achieve fitness goals. Bananas are an excellent food to eat because they contain high potassium, makes the mind alert making the brain smarter, builds strong bones, and keeps the digestive system regulated. Lean white meat such as chicken and fish are good to eat because they make the tissues in the body healthy. Good nutrition is more important because if the body absorbs the nutrients it needs, one will be able to exercise very
Face it, we have all heard the phrase,"You are what you eat" countless times in your life, but what does that truly mean. Every few months or years, millions go into trying new diets and diet pills but fail to understand why they cannot continue to eat healthy after their first few days on their new diet. Well, 1) the word "DIE" is in diet 2) no matter where you look you 're going to find delicious food ads and junk food and 3) you don 't have support.

I chose to have the same meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner for three days, not in a row, of course. So day one, two and three will look the same; it is roughly what I consume on a regular basis, I really didn’t have to alter my meals much at all, only to make sure I had the same meals each day.

Proper nutrition is one of the most essential elements to being healthy and living a long life. People deal with food every day, and food has been a part of life since the beginning of civilization. What we eat becomes our diet, and our diet plays a major role in deciding how healthy we are and how well our body functions. Without proper diet, our body cannot carry out the functions it needs to perform. Most people have some common knowledge on what is good and what is bad for the human body to consume. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains are some common items people think of when they think of healthy foods. However, it is not enough just to know what foods are good for your body, it is also important to understand why certain foods are good for you and what they do to help the body function.
