I grew up in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV), which is usually ranked among the top ten fattest cities in America. Because of the obesity concern in the RGV, I decided to change my eating habits as a child. Unfortunately, my lack of nutrition knowledge and professional guidance led me to become severely ill and hospitalized several times. Through my illness, I consulted with several professionals all of whom taught me about a healthy diet, mindset, and lifestyle. Being able to grow in a community with a high rate of obesity yet also understanding malnutrition from personal experience helped me learn the importance of nutrition in both extremes of the spectrum. Although my actions at a young age led to disabilities I currently struggle with, …show more content…
Initially, I came in with motivation of wanting to get into research that focused specifically in the brain like Alzheimer’s disease. However, I was inspired by a lecture about how food resources and accessibility is heavily impacted by businesses. Therefore, I developed an interest in community nutrition and business. In addition, I still wanted to understand all areas of nutrition. By earning a dietitian credential my experience in all areas of nutrition with the dietetic internship will help me make a difference in nutritious food accessibility through business. Moreover, I decided to build my …show more content…
Shortly after, I was promoted to be an account manager in AIESEC for the partner company National Instruments. As an account manager, I was responsible for facilitating communications among a National Instruments’ representative, AIESEC Turkey committee president, and our local chapter president. This responsibility helped me learn and enhance my skills in business communication and time management. Through the dietetic internship, I can incorporate these skills to communicate effectively and in a timely manner and also learn about communication in clinical setting. The following summer I shadowed a dietitian at a local hospital. When I shadowed the dietitian, I learned more about the responsibilities in dietetic career. It was motivating to see how a diet could change the health conditions of critically ill patients, especially in pediatrics. The dietetic internship can provide me more exposure to the dietetic field, which can help me become more familiarized to a clinical setting. Moreover, I helped to organize patient charts corresponding to each dietitian of the floor and learned about the dietitians’ experience and opportunities in the dietetic profession. Because of my interest, the dietitian director offered me a job as a catering associate. As a catering associate, I quickly
I have been in healthcare for about 6 years now. I started off as a nutritionist in a hospital setting, working with patients of all health statuses. I worked closely with doctors to determine what meal plan would best suit each patient. I went to work day after day to meet a new group of patients who were previously admitted the night before; very rarely did I work long term with one particular patient. Although I enjoyed helping people change their eating habits and educating them on how to better their health, at the end of the day I felt like there was something missing; I wanted more.

Keyla Negron is a first generation college student at the University of Connecticut, better known as UConn. She states that being a first generation college student was an accomplishment, but that it brought “all the challenges of trying to succeed”. She started college just like many other new students, not knowing exactly what to study or what to do after graduating. This made Keyla realize that is “one of the positive things” of college because “you have the opportunity to take different classes and discover your likes and dislikes”. In her case, it took her just about three years to discover a passion in nutrition, an area she never had imagined herself studying, although Keyla does realize that she was always “questioning how certain foods affect our body and what defined a healthy food and an unhealthy food”.
Waist sizes are expanding, everyone is on a diet of some sort, and a large majority of the population is under the care of a physician for some disease that can be attributed to the modern diet. With no end in sight to the obesity crisis and its associated diseases, individuals will need to educate themselves on healthy nutrition and how to avoid the pitfalls inherent in our food environment. Information on the origins of this epidemic, potential cures both magical and old-fashioned, and who or what is to blame for this crisis are everywhere you look. Two authors that offer their opinions on this vast subject are Michael Pollan, author of the book Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual, and Mary
“As I work every day”, she started, “even though this is a job that I do in a repetitive fashion, I am moved every time by the fact that I can treat and improve people’s lives through food: what we might sometimes care less.” “I am able to help people with what they choose to eat, which in the end will help them walk the paths of healthy lives. And this is the driving force that strengthens my life as well.” And she added, “But compared to the amount and intensity of education one has to attain in becoming a dietitian, I don’t think this profession gets paid enough.” “And I devote plethora of my time in counseling my patients to reshape their nutritional practices. But I realized that these practices are really tough to break. This is when the negative aspects of being a dietitian come into
Do you struggle with health problems or anxiety? If so, do not worry, because you are not alone. Today, America is in the middle of a serious crisis. Many people are suffering from diseases that are directly related to the American Diet. An estimated sixty-one percent of Americans are deemed overweight, and about one-third of these are currently obese (cdc.gov). Throughout the country, the obesity epidemic has struck every population demographic. According to the Center of Disease Control, an estimated 248,000 Americans die prematurely every year owing to obesity. The Center also asserts that many more people die prematurely today owing to illnesses related to obesity, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers. An even more ominous statistic is that the percentage of children and adolescents who are obese has doubled in the last twenty years (cdc.gov). In order to understand why obesity is on the sky rise in America, the average diet of Americans must be taken into consideration. In comparison to other countries, the American Diet is one of, if not the worst in terms of nutrition (Young 93). The unhealthy American Diet is a dietary habit that is highly associated with fast food, processed foods, soft drinks , and large portions, which explains why it has to change in order to save our country.
When I started studying health and nutrition in September 2014, my goals were, to find out the proper foods that a person should consume to lose weight and to find out what type of workouts burn the most fat. In October, 2014, I volunteered to become a fitness instructor at a Herbalife fit camp, where I helped lead out workouts for my local community. My objective was to help out the personal trainers that ran the camp wherever they needed the help at and to learn more about the proper nutrition choices that they offered to the community.
I wish to study the “Nutrition” bachelor 's degree course because health is the most important thing in our live. Although “health is wealth”, health is priceless. That is why we have to be more concern about what we eat every day. Otherwise, you have a lot of money but you still can not do anything to gain the health. So, if we do not eat healthy, we will get sick easily; especially having malnutrition, obesity or anorexia.
In the next five years, I aspire to give back to my community of East Hollywood, California. Help focus our healthcare system from sickness to wellness medical education. Furthermore, I want to develop my own wellness center that along with a multidisciplinary team out goal will be to drastically change families’ health and lifestyle. My ultimate goal within 10 years (20 years) from no will be to become the chair of LAHIDAN and demonstrate role model for the future dietitians yet to come. Providing nutrition services in my community and eventually one day my own private practice, I want to provide the resources a better well being of individuals to retard premature death, disability in adults’ unnecessary painful procedures, and decrease cost of health care. Dietitians are today’s secret heroes. What would athletes, patients, and clients of all ages do without them? This is definitely the career I see myself doing when I mature and get older because I know some people in the world really desire to be a better in shape. We only have one body so we have to take as much care of it as possible. It has always been my interest to help people work out and give advice especially my friends, but this is much bigger, it’s helping the world. I find this career interesting because not only do nutritionists get the chance to travel, work in various places or get the opportunity to meet different people but they put their heart in their job.

Obesity levels as the second leading cause of avoidable deaths in America, following smoking by only one percent. People need to set boundaries and health plans early in their life to overcome this new hazard. Even though we are living in a nation with great commercial control and incredible knowledge, we are also living in a nation with the least nutritional awareness. We are living in a nation that has been stunned by obesity.
I am inspired to explore the field of dietetics which is very broad and dietitians perform a variety of functions in their jobs. As a dietitian, I can work in a wide variety of positions such as a foodservice manager in commercial or institutional, a community nutritionist, such as the WIC and Headstart, a consultant to major food corporations such as Kelloggs and Kraft or go into sales. I am very interested in working in a position where I can help people develop habits to improve their health. I may eventually go on to graduate school to advance my knowledge of dietetics.
...arable interaction between nutrition and exercise, and I appreciate a program that challenges students to see how different areas of health intersect and connect. In addition to this solid foundation of public health knowledge, George Washington’s one-on-one mentorship opportunities and customizable field and research experiences allows students to develop the skills necessary to succeed in their specific area of interest. The university’s location also provides access to a wide range of organizations, agencies, and policymakers, and the chance to work with these groups would give me unparalleled insight into public health policy. George Washington’s public health program strives to fully prepare students for successful careers in public health, and I hope to use the knowledge and experience from the program to reduce the impact of eating disorders on public health.
