My undergraduate degree in Human Biology, emphasis in Nutritional Sciences, has given me a foundation of knowledge that could be expanded upon through the Clinical Dietetics master degree and supervised practice program at Grand Valley State University. The ASCEND accredited DPD program at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay fully prepares students, myself included, for a career in the Nutrition field. My professors facilitated learning while meeting the requirements of the certification with a rigorous cutting-edge curriculum. My degree focused on the Human body as a whole, while honing in on nutritional processes, advancements in nutrition research, and the various issues that future nutritional professionals may face. It was a well rounded program that encompassed all facets of the nutrition field with coursework in: community nutrition, food science, quantity food preparation, nutritional biochemistry, life cycle nutrition, and advanced nutrition and metabolism as one of the only undergraduate programs in the nation to teach upper-level concepts in nutrigenomics. I am an analytical thinker and enjoy learning about the scientific and practical use of nutrition, acknowledging that diet alone may not be enough to treat a disease but a combination of medicine and food can work wonders. In my MNT courses we had practice writing PES statements, using the Nutrition Care Process (ADIME), motivational interviewing, and reading and evaluating research articles to name a few topics. The army in Rome was made up of Plebeians, they were in the frontier to fight for their country, but they didn’t get an equal or fair treatment. Patricians on the other hand were enjoyed the fruits of success by the whole Romans. Rome was not a democratic Rome, but an aristocratic Rome at that time. The unfairness between the Patricians and Plebeians made a conflict.
Keyla Negron is a first generation college student at the University of Connecticut, better known as UConn. She states that being a first generation college student was an accomplishment, but that it brought “all the challenges of trying to succeed”. She started college just like many other new students, not knowing exactly what to study or what to do after graduating. This made Keyla realize that is “one of the positive things” of college because “you have the opportunity to take different classes and discover your likes and dislikes”. In her case, it took her just about three years to discover a passion in nutrition, an area she never had imagined herself studying, although Keyla does realize that she was always “questioning how certain foods affect our body and what defined a healthy food and an unhealthy food”.

I think this project was a great opportunity for me to learn how to educate and guide patient’s in making better nutritional decisions with the help of my using MyFitness Pal. I think MyFitness Pal is an excellent resource for any patient that is interested in improving their nutrition. Nutrition is often neglected by patient 's, therefore, as dental professionals it is important to use the latest technology to attract our patient’s to become more interested in their nutrition. The positive impact of this project has encouraged me to recommend using MyFitness Pal to my patient 's as a hands on activity to help correlate nutrition and the patient’s overall health. This project also allowed me to become aware of the poor food choices I made, which will help to benefit my patient’s that have a similar diet.
Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined.
The late Nineteenth Century saw increased industrial growth in the United States. One of the major developments that led to the increased industrial growth was the expansion of the railroad. The railroad provided infrastructure that made it cheap to transport goods from one place to another. Investors could now build industries in different parts of the country and transport products fast and to a wide network of consumers. Another resource that fostered industrial growth was the influx of immigrants into the United States. During this time, many foreigners were able to come into the country and provide cheap labor for building industries thus reducing the cost of industrialization. In addition, the country was in need of vigorous development to cater for the needs of the growing population at that time.
Nutritionism is an ideology that believes that the nutrients in foods are the key to understanding them. Nutritionism believers are so focused on the nutrients that food contains that they forget about all other aspects of food. The problem is that consumers rely on packaging to tell them what nutrients a food provides, since nutrients cannot be obviously seen, and they rely on science to tell us what nutrients are good and which are “evil”.
Since 1916, the United States Department of Agriculture (the government agency responsible for all U.S. policy regarding agriculture, food, and farming) has revised their recommendations several times. Unfortunately, money talks and the USDA’s recommendations are based on outdated science and are influenced by people with business interest. Even so, its recommendations are considered almost “holy” by physicians, nutritionists, and dieters, but in reality, they are the root cause of the problem. A single visit to our local public school cafeteria and it will become clear that they do not have the best interests of the children at heart. Based on a variety of personal experiences, I became very interested in the role of foods and nutrition. During my last year of highschool, my favorite who had a successful business succumbed to a strange alliment. He was tired all the time and was diagnosed to live only 1 year. While he didn't have cancer, his bloodwork had many abnormalites the doctors couldn't diagnose. He began to seek out other doctors who ultimately recommended that his see a dietitian. This changed his life. He started to eat low fat foods thats packed in vitamins, quit smoking and drinking and started to exercise regular bases. One year later, he could get out of bed, live as an full energetic person as he had before. This made him inspired to study nutrition in America. I was overwhelmed after I knew his history and never looked at food the same way again. It is clear to me now that how people eat and what people eat is an important factor in acheving optimum health, that just exercise isn't enough.

George Washington’s public health program strives to fully prepare students for successful careers in public health, and I hope to use the knowledge and experience from the program to reduce the impact of eating disorders on public health.
My field practicum at the University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center Nutrition Support Shared Resource would be a great experience for other students interested in public health, epidemiology, cancer prevention, and population dietary assessment. It would not be as relevant to students interested in clinical dietetics or food service because clients, patients, or customers are not interacted with and no food is served.
