When is it ever alright to deny a child special treatment because of what allergies the child has? If someone have never seen someone going through an allergic reaction, here is what they will witness: coughing, choking, hives all over the body, skin turning red like a lobster, vomiting, and eventually their airway closes up so they can not breath. Most young children are not aware of what they can or can not eat or what maybe is an ingredient inside what they are eating. The children’s parents are able to monitor what they eat at home under their care, but once the child heads to school there is a need for them to be in a safe environment. Two reasons why food allergies pose problems in schools is because the allergy of nuts is common it …show more content…
One parent said that her kid gets separated at nut-free tables which caused him to be teased and bullied. This quote says what happens to some kids when they sit alone at lunch “Despite the school telling the parents their son would sit at a "nut-free table," which made him sit alone at lunch, apart from the other students, resulting in teasing and humiliation”(Kalson). Sometimes the airborne peanuts can still affect students which cause them to sit in the nurse's office and eat in there instead of the lunchroom (Talia). The following quote says that a certain student couldn't go into the school cafeteria when they were serving peanut product because his allergy was so bad “We had a patient who couldn't go into the school cafeteria at all if they were serving anything with tree nuts," Ms. Waldron said. "He had to eat lunch in the nurse's office… It sounds like what they did may not have been the best thing socially for the child” (Kalson). In schools today the kind of allergy the male child had that made him eat in the nurse’s office is more rare with most people their allergic reactions only happen when they consume the food item they are allergic …show more content…
Not taking their concerns seriously and finding a resolution could be deadly for the child. Without resolution more and more children will visit the emergency room because of the food allergies they were exposed to in their school. When parents are bad at attempting to protect their child at school could result in bad parenting from the parent that is taking care of the child. Can the people in this current society be sympathetic towards the needs of others and find ways to help these children enjoy the experience of eating lunch with their friends? So that they can enjoy a simple life not worrying about what they can or can not eat, but to eat as a normal kid would be not fearing an allergic reaction to food or the foods they are allergic to. Mostly all children with food allergies wish they could lead a normal life if it were that they were not allergic to the certain foods they are allergic to. In the modern world today most kids who have allergic reactions that are in schools are in kindergarten to the 3rd
Having different food can affect a child health. There are milky ways, cake, cookies, pizza and lets just add some French fries in there and call that lunch. Don’t forget the drink sweet tea, pop and milk that one doesn’t choose to drink it. The students would go back to the class rooms after twenty minutes and be hungry at the end of the da. Garland said, “Instead, we allow school cafeterias to dispense the same junk food that kids could buy in any mall” (621). There has been so much junk food and soft drinks in schools that makes the student health unsafe and a distraction to their education. Garland mentioned that the students are filling up with fat, salt and sugar rather than filling up with fruit, whole grains and vegetables. Schools should be about healthiness, and well balanced diets. With having Students eat healthy can boost up their energy and ability to learn. With that being said when I was in high school it was nothing but junk food for three years. When Michele Obama changed the law on the school lunches my senior lunches have changed. It was nothing but healthy food like whole grain, no sweets, two scoops of fruits and vegetables. At Odessa they had a school store loaded with junk food that would be sold out by forth period. When the law came to the school there was nothing but baked chip and replaced with other baked nutrition food or we had nothing at all. The drink machines were changed out
Following my first sip of milk at the age of one, with the resulting hives and coughing that ensued, I involuntarily joined the community of fifteen million Americans afflicted by food allergies. Living everyday with additional allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish has, out of necessity, sharpened my compulsiveness with ingredients and food preparation, but furthermore has spurred me to intervene on behalf of fellow members in this emerging epidemic. The Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) national organization has been a source of education and support in my own life, and subsequently has aided my efforts to raise awareness among peers, and to nurture my advocacy involvement. Selected as a member of FARE’s Teen Advisory
The Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act has taken over schools nationwide and needs to be stopped. There are more negatives than positives that go along with this act and there needs to be an end. Schools should not have to waste money on expensive food to have it not be eaten. Students should be able to enjoy what the lunchroom has to offer. The students do not buy these lunches so the food goes to waste. In 2012, when the Healthy Hunger Free-Kids Act was made students stopped eating their school lunches and schools began to lose great amounts money. It 's beneficial to encourage healthy eating habits with schools but this act needs to be reformed.
...n potential death. What the FDA should do is support funding for more advertising, encouraging all citizens to be more aware with the potentially hazardous products they consume. I’m sure if people without food allergies were more aware of the potential harm their daily snack could cause to someone else, they would start to use a lot more caution.
Anaphylaxis shock occurs when someone who is sensitive to a substance they are exposed to which results in constricted airway and possible inability to breathe. Parents with children that experience any form of allergic reaction most notify the day care provider so appropriate precautionary steps are taken to maintain a safe health environment for these children. As allergy conditions have slowly increased within our society day care providers have taken more aggressive action to protect these children by extending a “peanut free environment” within the school setting. The percentage of children who experience their first allergic reaction outside the home has increased by 77% over past years daycare providers need to be trained and prepared to handle all types of allergic reaction situations. Steps that a provider and parent should take are as follows: 1. Food allergy action plan, 2. Inform all staff, 3. Post child’s name and allergy,
True food allergies are rare. The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) estimates that only 2% of the adult population of the United States is allergic to foods. Further, only eight foods cause 90% of all food allergic reactions. They are milk, egg, wheat, peanut, soy, tree nuts, fish and shellfish (Food Allergy Network). Many reactions to foods are really intolerance (reaction of the metabolism due to a chemical deficiency) rather than allergy (reaction of the immune system). Many infant allergies, which are later outgrown, are thought to be the result of immature immune systems. However, other allergies become stronger as the person ages and inadvertently becomes more exposed. One report on KCBS radio indicated there may be a link between mothers who ate peanuts during pregnancy and their children’s subsequent allergies.
All sorts of food allergies affect eight percent of children and two percent of adults in the United States. Allergic reactions happen because one's immune system overreacts to regular foods that are ordinarily harmless to the general population (7). An allergy affecting many children and adults recently in the United States is an allergy to peanuts. In the last few years, tremendous amounts of people have developed this allergy, which seems, in most cases, to be very severe.
A recent study in 2015 reports that over 15 million people in America have food allergies that is 1 in every 13 people under the age of 18. Making it very likely that somebody in this room is part of these 15 million American’s who have food allergies. If you are somebody who has food allergies, or you know of someone who has food allergies, this speech will help you better understand more about food allergies, so you can deal with food allergies and more importantly be more careful around other people who do. So today, I am going to be informing you about Food allergies.
In the United States, over three million people are diagnosed with food allergies every year, and over 50 million people have an allergy to some type of food. This number includes one in every 13 children. Most people are born with their allergies; however, allergies can develop at any age, and that is what happened to me. I developed an allergy when I was 14 years old. It was then that some troubling and deleterious side effects started happening to me. When people develop food allergies, their immune systems overreact to normally harmless food proteins. (foodallergy.org). These attacks can affect people in a multitude of ways; they can cause hives, difficulty in breathing, stomach aches, and many more symptoms.
The most common triggers to stimulate anaphylaxis in children are food products such as peanuts, dairy, seafood, etc. Exposure to any of these allergens can result in severe anaphylactic reactions within 20 minutes. Australian Resuscitation Council, 2012).However the doctors discuss the history of symptoms occurring in children suffering with peanut allergy before declaring them to be anaphylactic and prescribing medication. Unknown, 2014. Symptoms of anaphylaxis may occur in varied forms depending upon the severity of the reaction.
In the same room with you, there might be people allergic to your food, and by bringing that food, you put them in danger. Without knowing, you will hurt someone or even kill. Imagine you being allergic to something. You came to the movies knowing you will never find this single fruit that you are allergic to, and then, BAM, you see someone in front of you chewing an orange. You immediately start to scratch, and soon you face is twice as big as it should be.
Allergies are especially unique in the medical field because they differ among patients. An allergy is a specific immunologic reaction to a normally harmless substance, one that does not bother most people. People with allergies are often sensitive to many substances. Common allergens that cause allergic reactions include seasonal, outdoor allergens like tree, grass, and weed pollen, and year-round indoor allergens including dust particles, animal dander, and indoor mold. Most people usually can be cured by various treatments.
Many of these children only get a full meal while having their school lunch, so many of these children go hungry the rest of the day.
75% of the world’s population is lactose intolerant, 25% of which live in America, so why is it the American school system looks at all students the same when providing lunch? Lactose intolerance is when one’s body cannot properly digest foods containing lactose because of their body’s lack of lactase, which is what helps other people digest dairy. No two people with lactose intolerance are the same. Some can handle eating certain dairy products better than others, and some have different symptoms than others. Just because there is a wide range when it comes to lactose intolerance, doesn’t mean it should be overlooked, especially when it comes to kids. By forcing students to take milk, schools are not only endangering the student’s health, but possibly losing money as well.
The Netflix Original documentary series, Rotten, highlights the health, economic, and social issues that surround food and animals, and showcases the understanding of that particular issue and its solution using science. The specific issue that will be discussed here along with its impact is related to food allergies. According to the documentary, food allergies have become considerably common in the last decade. They have a major impact on people, and it is extremely severe to the point where an individual may die. Food allergies have also revolutionized the way restaurants operate, and how chefs cook, because not doing so could result in the deaths of many people, especially children. In the episode, “The Peanut Problem”, researchers and
