Reading the book, Fire From Heaven by Mary Renault, one would question whether Alexander’s destiny is directed more towards nature or nurture. Nature played an important role in Alexander’s life as well as nurture. Taking a closer look into his talents and abilities, the relationships he has with others, and how both of these were able to meld into each other to help balance for Alexander’s benefit. This will show how Alexander was nurtured into his destiny and how nature helped him achieve his destiny.
In the beginning we can see that Alexander has natural talents and abilities that help him in his everyday life. For example, the book opens on him being awakened by a snake coiled around his waist. This happens to Alexander at a young age and shows that he is a descendant of Herakles, on his mother’s side. Alexander goes into the royal stables and into a stall with a foaled horse. “As he had hoped, no one was about to say she was dangerous at such time.” This sentence makes it appear that the horse had some dangerous tendencies. On October 9, 1968, a set of twins were born, but separated at birth and ultimately, put up for adoption. The decision to separate the twins came from the adoption agency who wanted to conduct a nature versus nurture experiment; however, the experiment was conducted in secret. However, for unknown reasons, the experiment never developed to fruition. Unaware the child they adopted was a twin; both sets of parents raised a singular child. Thirty-five years later, one twin began a search for her biological mother through the adoption agency, only to find out that she was born a twin. Upon learning her identity, she reached out to her twin and they began the journey of getting to know one another by comparing characteristics that appeared similar such as temperament and mannerism. They even discovered that they both held positions as a film critic and enjoyed almost identical movies.
Freeman also spends enough time describing the difficulties and contradictions in the sources of Alexander's story that the reader can gain a sense of what may have happened while also still having a firm grasp of the his opinion of what he thinks is the truth. Some of the other texts briefly touched on the difficulties with the sources and the contradictions between them, but did a poor job conveying the opinion of the author, or the reliability of the various sources. Freeman also spends some time describing the history of Alexander. He touched briefly on Alexander's father, mother, and mentors and how they shaped him and to give a sense of him as a person. Without an understanding of where Alexander came from it is more difficult to gauge the validity of the disparate sources. With an understanding of who Alexander was as a person researchers can better understand his personality and then make better determinations if something seems out of character or not.

The debate over nature versus nurture is very important and cannot be ignored. Identical twins are different in many ways. Studies have shown that nurture, is more dominant than nature.
