In contemporary society, individuals consider Alexander the Great to be the greatest warrior in history. He was a Macedonian warrior at the age of 14, a general at the age of 18 and King at the age of 19. As king, he conquered lands and gained the support of many civilizations along the way for about 12 years (Encyclopedia of World Biography 1988). It is extremely apparent that Alexander the Great possessed numerous highly desired qualities, such as intelligence, ambition and determination. However, Alexander the Great also possessed various negative qualities, such as his brutality, greed and manipulative ways. Regardless of the character traits he has developed over time, it is extremely appalling, as well as impressive, that he was able to conquer and achieve so much, at such a young age. It started on September 20th, 356 B.C., when Alexander was born to Philip II of Macedonia and his first wife, Queen Olympias. Alexander had one other sibling, a younger sister, who was born one year after him. Both Alexander and his sister were born in Pella, Macedonia. Alexander was disobedient as young boy, and was often controlled by his domineering mother, who taught him to resent his father, because was never really present in his life growing up, as his military campaigns and other women consumed him. Olympias also instilled other negative thoughts into Alexander’s mind while growing up, such as an intense dislike for women and wine. It is believed that she instilled many of these particular thoughts into her son’s head over the years, simply because they were the complete opposite of what his father’s would ever be. For example, Philip II could be portrayed as a womanizer and deeply indulged in wine as much as he could (Encyclopedia o... ... middle of paper ... ...of by simply arresting and executing them. Alexander also married Stateira, Darius’ daughter to fully establish his rule, even though he was married to Rhoxana. In 323 B.C., Alexander moved back to Babylon, with hopes to explore the seas and conquer North Africa. However, he did not get to achieve these goals as he contracted malaria and died 11 days after, at the age of 32 (Encyclopedia of World Biography 1988). Although, Alexander the Great’s reign emphasized his brutality, his accomplishments over the course of his extremely short life are truly impressive. After taking into consideration how much he had obtained by the age of 32, it is hard not to see why one might call Alexander the Great the greatest warrior in history. The fact that Alexander the Great is still being referred to and talked about in modern day society shows how much of a legend he truly is.
Peter Alexander was born in 1965 in Melbourne, Australia. He attended school at Mount Scopus Memorial College and was voted as the least likely to succeed by schoolmates. Alexander's teacher suggested he leave and go to TAFE but he was stubborn and decided to stay at school and successfully completed Year 12. Nowadays, Alexander states that the confidence and self-belief was derived from his school life and he was able to set high goals and achieve them independently. He wishes that he’d done a business course before starting his own business to jump start the benefits and profits in the sleepwear business.
Have you heard of Alexander the Great, the famous historical figure? There are many amazing stories about him explaining the courageous things he has accomplished. However, if you learn more about him and his accomplishments, you will soon realize the real person Alexander was. Alexander the Great, ruler of his empire, was in fact not great as his title states. The definition of great is a person who shows concern for others, has leadership and shows intelligence.
In the countries who believed Alexander was the son of the devil or the devil himself, will say he is not ‘great’ but a demon who did evil. The countries who were on his side would say he was the greatest conqueror to live. He began as a Macedonian cavalry commander at eighteen, king of Macedonia at twenty, conqueror of Persia at twenty-six and explorer of India at thirty [Foner and Garraty]. The amount of large scale accomplishments he managed to finish in a span of six years is astonishing. Alexander’s tomb was the largest tourist attraction in the ancient world. The tomb was even visited by Julius Caesar, Pompey, Caligula, and Augustus. Alexander the Great’s accomplishments set a bar in which provided a standard that all other leaders would match their careers too. Many leaders after Alexander could not reach the standard left by him [Foner and
Alexander the Great is undoubtedly one of the most famous leaders and Kings in our history. This one man miraculously led his armies into countless battles and created an empire nearly as large as the Roman Empire. Men and women all over the world have clearly heard of the amazing things that Alexander accomplished in his times; however, the question of whether his deeds were heroic or villainous still remains. To answer this question, Alexander the Great was unmistakably a villain.
Although several people may disagree, these achievements and intelligence lead to great success. For example, against Porus and his army, Alexander puzzled the elephants causing them to stampede and kill Porus’s army. Also, in eleven years Alexander conquered 2,200,000 square miles of land at the age of twenty. Nobody can do this any day and Alexander showed his ability to persevere through tough times. Ultimately, when thinking of great names in history, remember Alexander the Great and all his great accomplishments because nobody has been able to conquer so much land in such a short amount of time with little rest and so much confidence in any
Alexander The Great was a very influential person in history. The reason that he is so recognized is because of how much he achieved at a young age. When he was a child, his father, Philip II of Macedon employed Aristotle, the famous philosopher to teach Alexander strategy, math and art as well as chess. By the time he was 20 he was extremely educated and really good at chess. When his Father was assassinated in 336 B.C.E, Alexander took his place in the army and started his conquest of much of the early world. Alexander was great because of his leadership, Integrity and courage.
Alexander the Great is hailed, by most historians, as “The Great Conqueror” of the world in the days of ancient Mesopotamia. “Alexander III of Macedon, better known as Alexander the Great, single-handedly changed the nature of the ancient world in little more than a decade. Alexander was born in Pella, the ancient capital of Macedonia in July 356 BCE. His parents were Philip II of Macedon and his wife Olympias. Philip was assassinated in 336 BCE and Alexander inherited a powerful yet volatile kingdom. He quickly dealt with his enemies at home and reasserted Macedonian power within Greece. He then set out to conquer the massive Persian Empire” (Web, BBC History). It is important to note, which will maybe explain his brutal actions, that Alexander was only twenty years old when he became the king of Macedonia. “When he was 13, Philip hired the Greek philosopher Aristotle to be Alexander’s personal tutor. During the next three years Aristotle gave Alexander training in rhetoric and literature and stimulated his interest in science, medicine, and philosophy, all of which became of importance in Alexander’s later life” (Web, Project of History of Macedonia). “In, 340, when Philip assembled a large Macedonian army and invaded Thrace, he left his 16 years old son with the power to rule Macedonia in his absence as regent, but as the Macedonian army advanced deep into Thrace, the Thracian tribe of Maedi bordering north-eastern Macedonia rebelled and posed a danger to the country. Alexander assembled an army, led it against the rebels, and with swift action defeated the Maedi, captured their stronghold, and renamed it after himself to Alexandropolis. Two years later in 338 BC, Philip gave his son a commanding post among the senior gener...
Few historical figures stand out in the same degree as that of Alexander the Great. He was a warrior by 16, a commander at age 18, and was crowned King of Macedon by the time he was 20 years old. He did things in his lifetime that others could only dream about. Alexander single-handedly changed the nature of the ancient world in just over a decade. There were many attributes that made Alexander “Great.” He was a brilliant strategist and an inspired leader; he led by example and was a conqueror at heart. In looking at his early childhood, accession to the throne, conquests, marriage, and death one can see why Alexander the Great is revered in historical contexts as one of the greatest figures of all time.
Alexander the Great was only 20 years when his father Philip of Macedon died. Even though he was a young man, he had an unusual talent for politics and military tactics. After his father’s death, Alexander moved to continue Philip’s invasion of Persia. In the ten years of his war campaigns, Alexander conquered a large portion of the then-known world. (Judge & Langdon, 2012.)
Alexander the Great has been considered for centuries as a military genius and influenced conquerors such as Hannibal the Carthaginian, the Romans Pompey, Caesar and Napoleon. Although, he inherited a strong kingdom and an experienced army, Alexander was capable to display his leadership and military capabilities. In 338 B.C., his father, King Phillip II, gave Alexander a commanding post among the senior generals as the Ma...
Countries rise and fall, but within this chaos is the certainty that new leaders will emerge to fill the shoes of those fallen. What is it that separates the great leaders from the lesser? This question weighed heavy on the minds of many great Renaissance thinkers due to the power that derives from this knowledge. In the 16th century, Niccolò Machiavelli sought out to answer this time worn question. It was in his publication of The Prince, that Machiavelli spread his cold and practical formula of how to rule. In The Prince, Machiavelli clearly states what characteristics great ruler have. These Machiavellian traits show themselves in the life of Alexander the Great and some of the traits used by Machiavelli were taken from Alexander’s style of ruling. Even though he lived before the creation of The Prince, much of Alexander’s success stems from his Machiavellian principles of war, deception, and his ability to absorb the culture of conquered territories by limiting changes in their government.
Even though Alexander III of Macedonia, more commonly known as Alexander the Great, only lived to be 32 years old, his accomplishments were so vast it would be impossible to capture them all in a 3-hour Hollywood film. The well-known director, Oliver Stone, spent years studying Alexander and dreaming of making an epic film about his life. Stone's 2004 film, Alexander, was met with reviews that made it sound as if it was mediocre or disappointing, but the problem with it is that in the era of exciting action-driven Hollywood films, Alexander asks viewers to go deeper than they are accustomed. The length of the film was considered too long, but the history of Alexander is so huge that it is actually too short. Since Alexander lived more than 2300 years ago, and much of the information on Alexander's life has been lost over time, it seems to me that Alexander accurately depicts the historical era, Alexander's relationships, battle scenes and the different cultures involved in Alexander's conquests.
Alexander the Great (July 356BC – June 323BC) was King of the ancient Greek Kingdom of Macedon. By the age of thirty he had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world. He remained undefeated in battle and is considered one of history’s most successful Military commanders. Historians’ have offered theories which could explain Alexander’s motivation to conquer so much of the known world. Some suggest that Alexander was an idealistic visionary who sought to unite the world, whereas others argued that he was a fascist whose hunger for power drove him. The Ancient Greeks were driven by love of honour (philotimaea) and their desire for greatness. They were competitive, always striving to better one another.
The first matter to consider is what constitutes “greatness”. There are no set standards no checklist, to apply to a person, to determine it they are “great.” The simplest way that I could conceive to decide whether this title should apply to Alexander was to determine if he was, in some way, superior to the rulers that came before or after his reign. The most obvious place for me to start my consideration is with Alexander’s vast accomplishments as a conquerer.
Have you ever wondered why Alexander from Macedonia is called Alexander the Great. According to history, it is because he is the most glorious general in the history who conquered Persia, Greece, Egypt and Babylon in a very inexperienced age. He became the commander of Macedonian armies at age eighteen and the king of Macedonia at age twenty. After six years of preparation, he conquered the great Persian empire. Unfortunately, he died at age thirty-three. He would have conquered many lands if he hadn’t died at a such young age. He was a legend and an icon for great kings like Charlemagne, Julius Caesar, and Pompey. World’s most famous generals tried to compete with him but they couldn’t accomplish. After years, his tomb
