Healthcare is a complex activity which requires many different professionals such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, etc. Therefore, teamwork in nursing is critical in management of patients. One working alone cannot achieve the target of healing a patient. When nurses work as a team the job is easier, we are more efficient leading to enhanced patient care and less errors. Other advantages of teamwork are reduced stress and less burnout. Lastly, job satisfaction and patient satisfaction results from collaboration. However, there are challenges faced in working together such as poor communication, ineffective leadership and inability to resolve conflicts.

Negative working conditions and employee stress is well known. It has been reported that up to 13% of new nurses consider leaving their jobs within one year. Job dissatisfaction is reported to be strongly associated with nurse turnover. (Kovner et al. 2007). Collaboration as a team can lead to less burnout and no longer is one person responsible for patient health because an entire team comes together to coordinate the well-being of the patient.
Finally, people are more satisfied when healthcare professionals are able to collaborate. When roles are clear, there is less confusion about the patient’s treatment plan. Families feel more at ease because teamwork is centered on solid communication which leads to families being more satisfied with healthcare. Healthcare workers are also more satisfied with their work.
There are challenges associated with teamwork. Poor communication is one challenge faced and this creates situations where medical errors can occur. It has the potential to cause severe injury or unexpected death. Failing to communicate are the leading root cause of the sentinental events reported to the Joint Commission from 1995 to 2004. By being assertive, establishing trust and respect this will promote good communication in the work
