As the nurse, it is my responsibility to be the patient’s advocate. In order to do this I must be aware of my own opinions, attitude, and environment so that it does not influence my practice. Through continuous education, I am able to gain a better understanding of my cultural practice in regards to healthcare. Self-reflection is imperative, so that I can recognize areas for improvement. There is never an ending point for growth; it is my desire to decrease any chance of offending my patient and their family. Healthcare providers can potentially offend the patient, in turn causing increased stress to an already critical situation. Our attitudes can cause unnecessary tension between the patient and hospital staff. Encouraging open communication with patients and families can encourage health promotion and reduce potential risk. Open communication allows the client to feel more comfortable sharing cultural beliefs that directly affect their plan of care. Being mindful of my personal attitude and facial expressions are ways to remain respectful to my patients. This allows me to more easily retrieve all the necessary information from the patient that could drive the plan of care; as a result we then have the details needed to develop the most optimal plan of action for the client. Discuss the wishes with a non-bias approach to inform the client of the potential risks, benefits and alternatives to transfusions/ blood products and potential preferences they might have in regards to their care.
