It is not only the positivity 's that matters, the negativities are very crucial too because they make us work harder to improving and getting better in what we do by helping us to achieve our goals after going through all those experiences. "According to Merriam-Webster 's collegiate(R) dictionary, Strength is defined as the quality or state of being strong" (Strength. 2012). "Weaknesses is defined as lack of strength" (Weakness. 1997). "Self-Understanding helps individual in his or her recognition of weaknesses assisting the person to overcoming any shortcomings in the nursing field" (Carson, 2005). To be a good leader, you must be empowered with the Knowledge on strengths and weaknesses. Nursing leaders ' responsibility extends to become a voice for the nurses and for offering quality in patient care, not just at their organizations but spanning the whole communities, interacting with law makers in revising regulations and laws, with researchers and educators. Nurse leaders, in particular those at manager and supervisory levels are spread sparsely. They are involved in business planning, human resources, information management and writing reports. It is advisable for them to refocus the leadership on care which matters to patients which is the essence of
Nursing advocacy is a professional obligation and the standard of practice expected by the Ontario College of Nurses (CNO, 2009). The concept of advocacy is enshrined into the code of professional ethics that nurses “must promote the interests of clients in their care” (CNO 2009). To meet this standard the nurse must first ensure a deep understanding of advocacy and how it relates to the nursing profession. Advocacy in nursing is a concept that can be first seen in the early work of nursing theorist Florence Nightingale and her plight to protect the safety of patients through autonomous nursing actions (Goldie, 1987). Although the concept of advocacy had been presented in early nursing theory, the term “advocacy” had not been

In my brief nursing career I sometimes struggle with my confidence and leadership abilities to guide and instruct others beginning their nursing career. My unit manager sees me much differently. She views me as a proficient nurse with the ability to teach, instruct and a beneficial influence on new nurses and nursing students. This inner conflict is slowing going away bit by bit as I complete each class towards a bachelor’s in nursing. This conflict has pushed me to climb the ladder in the nursing profession and has improved the way I see and feel about myself on a personal level. A better estimation of leadership capabilities and effectiveness lean more heavily on confidence and self-awareness rather than on IQ and technical ability (Showry & Manasa, 2014, p.
Nurses play many vital roles when it comes to working with patients. Among the many different healthcare professionals, nurses experience the most interpersonal contact with patients; therefore, it is sensible for a nurse to be an advocate for their patients. For the patients and families of patients receiving end-of-life care, the process may be very stressful and may often be considered a burden. As a nurse, it is important to advocate for the patient by communicating effectively, educating the patient and families, delivering information with honesty, and making sure patients understand and are fully aware of their options regarding their healthcare. Increasing awareness about the benefits of advance care planning helps guide healthcare professionals as they deliver the best care for the patient nearing the end of their life.
Leadership is defined by Northouse (2013) as a transactional experience between persons whereby one individual influences a group of individuals who have a mutual goal. Leaders may hold authority attributed to them by the group, substantiated by how they are regarded, whether or not they have positional authority. In contrast to management, where the goal is to provide order through control, leadership is concerned with producing change through transformation and practical adjustments (Northouse, 2013). Because of the nature of nursing, its obligation to promoting health and healing of people, nursing leadership concentrates change efforts based on human needs and concurrently ponders the needs of administrations largely because they understand the interrelatedness of the two influences.
Each individual gets to a point in life whereby they assess their internal qualities, people reflect their profession aspirations and attempt to see which careers will make them happy in their lives. It is also important for a person to consider whether they have the qualities needed for a particular profession and also consider the available resources that will help him or her reach their set goals (Chafey, Rhea, Shannon, & Spencer, (1998). Every human being has weaknesses and strengths in their personal or professional aspirations. Having strength means that someone has the physical and mental power to perform things in a successful manner. On the other hand, weaknesses are the drawbacks, the inadequate lack of strength or power to accomplish important goals in life, and every human has some potential of being a leader in some way (American Association of Critical Care Nurses (2006). This paper will discuss the outcome results inventory on the nurse as a manager, it illustrates personal strength and weaknesses in relation to personal life and professional aspirations. The paper will also discuss planning for career, disciplines in personal expedition, practice
The nursing leadership problem is there are not enough bachelor prepared nurses to staff hospitals nationwide, because Magnet hospitals have a goal to have 80% of nurses in the hospitals to have a four year Bachelor of Science in nursing degree by the year 2020 (Sarver, Cichra, & Kline, 2015). This problem of the shortage of nurses stems from the baby boomers retiring and needing more medical care. So to offset the need for nurses, more two year programs for nurses have begun around the area to increase the nurse population to accommodate the baby boomers. The problem is leading to the nurses who are working short staffed becoming dissatisfied with their job and jumping around from hospital to hospital causing high turnover rates
Through practice groups and exercises we can identify the independent weaknesses and strengths. By writing different modules,
For personal and professional growth, given my personality traits, I need to embrace my strengths and weaknesses. I must use my strengths to my advantage, to be more effective academically and in the workplace, but I also need to identify and try to overcome my weaknesses, especially professionally.
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
Understanding oneself is a very important character for adaptive leadership. Unless we understand our self, it will be hard to understand others. The Johari window model well illustrates four areas of how people's self-awareness and information processing on the basis of feedback. They are very useful for understanding the strengths and weakness to develop the leadership skill (Luft and Ingham 1961). By understanding, this concept nurses will use their knowledge for understanding others in their workplace. As a result, nurses are the one who are 24 hours carers and advocate on behalf of the patients, they can also create a positive environment by establishing the better nurse-patient relationship. In addition, nurses have very good understanding of emotional intelligence as a result they can their own emotion by understanding consumers emotions and this is another important skill of adaptive leadership (Mayer, Salovey and Caruso
As nurse leaders, it is important for us to recognize the leadership theories and the styles that are relevant to our own nursing practice. In today’s society, leadership is a common yet useful trait used in every aspect of life and how we use this trait depends on our role. What defines leadership is when someone has the capability to lead an organization or a group of people. There are many examples that display a great sense of leadership such being an educator in health, a parent to their child, or even a nurse. In the medical field, leadership is highly used among nurses, doctors, nurse managers, director of nursing, and even the vice president of patient care services. Among the many positions in the nursing field, one who is a nurse manager shows great leadership. The reason why nurse manager plays an important role in patient care is because it is known to be the most difficult position. As a nurse manager, one must deal with many patient care issues, relationships with medical staff, staff concerns, supplies, as well as maintaining work-life balance. Also, a nurse manager represents leadership by being accountable for the many responsibilities he or she holds. Furthermore, this position is a collaborative yet vital role because they provide the connection between nursing staff and higher level superiors, as well as giving direction and organization to accomplish tasks and goals. In addition, nurse managers provide nurse-patient ratios and the amount of workload nursing staff has. It is their responsibility to make sure that nursing staff is productive and well balanced between their work and personal lives.
