Amber Morelli Overview of Nursing Informatics This chapter outlined the history of nursing informatics (NI), discussing the evolution of NI from a definition into a recognized specialty by the American Nurses Association (ANA).
Important Concepts in Nursing Informatics Graves and Corcoran provided a description and definition for nursing informatics that eventually became widely accepted in the 1990s. In 1992, a few years after this definition was coined, nursing informatics became a recognized specialty by the American Nurses Association. The ANA currently defines nursing informatics as a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practicing.

The HCI is the study of how people interact with computers, and how to design easy and efficient computers for humans. An important concept to human-computer interaction is usability, which deals with specific issues of human performance during computer interactions. To promote usability, an INS should ensure that an application is effective and efficient. Because technology is becoming more prevalent and complex, now is a good time to learn nursing informatics; an increase in technology is leading to job growth. A federal mandate required all health providers to switch to electronic health records by 2014. As a result, the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) estimates that 70,000 health informatics specialists will be needed within the next few years, resulting in a 23.7% job growth through 2020 (Raines, 2012; Richards & Terkanian,
