Nursing homes are for people who do not have the ability to take care of themselves in their own home. They are similar to hospitals, they provide medical care, physical care, and speech and occupational therapy. For this assignment I was asked to go to a nursing home and ask the facility questions and make my own observations. I was able to choose a facility easily due to the day my mom has been a CNA at the Gorham house for about two years. She works in the unit where people are mostly in the last stages of their lives, so they require a lot of assistance. After being able to make my quick visit, I was able to ask many questions and made observations on what it is like to work and to live in these facilities. What is it like living at the Gorham house?I was able to walk through a tour of the entire building, including the assisted living side. The “lobby area” is very roomy and comfortable for the residents. They have tv’s, with huge bookshelves and couches and sofas spreaded out. They have board games and the residents were actually out playing with them. However, on a separate floor of the facility, is where the actual nursing care takes place. The people who live here at mostly individuals suffering from Dementia or Alzheimer’s and are in the last stages of their disease. This is where my mom works, she helps them …show more content…

The rest of the individuals usually have medicare. For a private room it costs roughly 40,000 yearly. An advantage to living at this facility is that they have so many types of care. For people who are newly diagnosed with their disease, they can stay in the independent living side of the building under their disease progresses further. Preventing them from having to move when they get more sick. A potential negative is the fact that some nursing homes can be understaffed. With not enough people, means that there is more room for accidents or falls to happen, which does not insure
