Having a group of senior citizens following you around for dinner most likely doesn’t sound like a fun night. However, working at a nursing home doesn’t feel like an actual job at all; I actually enjoy spending my nights at the Grand Residence. Not only has this job given me responsibility, but I also have built relationships with many residents. While spending my evenings at a nursing home throughout my high school career, I have come to the realization that I am comfortable and genuinely happy with pursuing a career in patient care in the foreseeable future.
One example I’d like to share is about one special lady named Pat. She taught me many things. While working in the “feeding room” I assisted her. This room is separate from the dining room where residents need assistance to feed themselves. She was always smiling and very talkative; she conveyed her whole life to me. I looked forward to our time together and our relationship grew quickly. She loved to paint, read, and surprise me with her paintings. She encouraged me to work harder in school and to try new things rather than doing the same things day after day. Consequently, last year I took Painting I and

When we talked about school and life as a teenager, I never described it as positive or enjoyable until I met Pat. She spoke of being young and having a family as the best two things a person could have in life. Pat emphasized to me that when I’m her age, I will miss school and having dinner every night with my family. Realizing I had been taking this situation for granted, I began having more conversations and doing activities with my family. Instead of hanging with my friends every weekend, I have concluded what’s important: education, family, and how fortunate I am for my health. For instance, I found a new hobby of riding bikes with my mom. Pat may not have given me the idea of riding bikes, but she gave me the inspiration to try new
I worked with Dementia and Alzheimer patients as a Certified Nursing Assistant for almost three years. Working with the elderly has been one of my greatest achievements. I assisted my residents with bathing, grooming and making them feel comfortable. I was able to create a favorable environment for my residents while working with them. I had the opportunity to see patients go from early stage to their last stage of dementia. This gave me an opportunity to want to do more for people who are in need of my care. From my experience, I learnt that nursing is not just a job; it’s a responsibility and a calling, and it requires that you derive joy in what you are doing even in the toughest moment of caring for your
When I am older I would love to be a Nurse Practitioner, I enjoy helping people when they are sick and taking care of them. Another reason I want to be a Nurse Practitioner is because my sister is also a Nurse Practitioner.
Dealing with death on a regular basis can take a toll on a person. Being a hospice nurse will never be easy and is certainly not for the faint of heart. A hospice nurse watches patient’s health decline, often times very rapidly, and many times sit by the patient’s side as they pass away. It can be exhausting both emotionally and physically. You need to have a big heart and a strong will to help those in need for the occupation. Sara Schmidt certainly never saw herself in the profession, but discovered that she has a true love for helping people.
Licensed practical nurses (LPN 's) fill an important role in modern health care practices. Their primary job duty is to provide routine care, observe patients’ health, assist doctors and registered nurses, and communicate instructions to patients regarding medication, home-based care, and preventative lifestyle changes (Hill). A Licensed Practical Nurse has various of roles that they have to manage on a day to day basis, such as being an advocate for their patients, an educator, being a counselor, a consultant, researcher, collaborator, and even a manager depending on what kind of work exactly that you do and where. It is the nursing process and critical thinking that separate the LPN from the unlicensed assistive personnel. Judgments are based
When I first decided to come to college for nursing after staying in university for three years, I had an argument with my parents because they were not happy with my decision. My parents just wanted me to finish rest of my degree and they thought that it did not make sense to go to college for diploma, and not complete the university degree. However, I just wanted to complete my nursing diploma in the same amount of time that I can finish my degree in the university because I always wanted to be a nurse.
Adult nursing is a subject I am passionate about. In my opinion, there is nothing more important than the health, safety and security of one’s self and others. I aspire to achieve these attributes for individuals in everyday life and this course will help me to do so. I find helping people rewarding and adult nursing provides a professional platform to achieve this target. It also helps me to progress to a stable job that is solely concentrated on making a positive difference in someone’s life. For this reason, I would feel privileged to be accepted on to this course.
A care worker has many responsibilities. For example, it is a care worker’s responsibility to treat each individual fairly and equally with care. This is because a care worker would have to help people who have difficulties doing everyday tasks like getting up out of bed, getting to different places around the home, getting dressed, using the facilities and on some occasions eating. Some clients in the home could have physical disabilities, learning disabilities or mental illnesses such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. A role that a care worker could have is spending quality time with the residents, talking to them and doing activities as a group. This will make the residents feel valued and cared for. Another role that a care worker could have would be to tend to a
Saying that you are a registered nurse is a broad statement. Registered nursing is a job that has many aspects. Registered nurses work in many different settings and they carry out many different routines. As a registered nurse you could be exposed to many different opportunities. My goal is to be a registered nurse but, I need to learn a lot. Becoming a being a registered nurse requires a lot of hard work and effort but, if I focus on my goal I will be able to achieve it.
Introduction“High turnover for direct care staff, recently measured at 71% for the nation’s nursing homes is acostly problem” (Bishop, C. E., Weinberg, D. B., Leutz, W., Dossa, A., Pfefferle, S. G., &Zincavage, R. M. 2008, p. 1/15). The recruitment, training, and screening process is costly fornursing homes. It has been estimated to cost nursing homes $2,500 to go through this processwith a new employee. The initial cost is not the only thing that the nursing homes lose. Lossesinclude the prior CNA’s knowledge of how the nursing home is run, the preferences and needs ofthe residents, and relationships with the residents. The turnover rate directly effects the care thatresidents in extended care facilities receive. Factors that affects the turnover rate is the pay, benefits, staff to resident ratio, and the possibility for growth in the job.
Contributions of The American Geriatric Society Florida’s hurricane season has created many tragedies, in particular, a tragedy involving one of our most vulnerable populations, which included the evacuation of a 152-bed nursing home and a total of 8 dead elderly residents (Reisner, Fink & Yee, 2017). A prognosis by the U.S. Census Bureau states that by 2030 the geriatric population will double in size (Brown-O'Hara, 2014). The geriatric community has what is called geriatric syndromes, which consist of five main conditions that elderly patients are at a higher risk of which are: pressure ulcers, falls, decline of daily function, incontinence, and delirium (Brown-O’Hara, 2014). The purpose of this paper is to reveal information on a geriatric organization, such as The American Geriatric Society and how they take part in contributing positively to the elderly across our nation. Founding and History
Nursing homes have never been a happy place for me. They remind me of old age and sadness. It all started when my dear old granny had a stroke and was placed in a nursing home. With my mother being of no help the burden was left on me to check up on her. Every.
What to Look for in Home Care Are you looking for a Home Care provider? There are many to pick from so the process can seem tough at first. The key is to know which features are critical to helping you pick the right one. Here are some of the key factors to weigh before selecting a provider: 1.
When it comes time to face the important family decision of how to care for an aging cherished one, the choices are limited. You can either place them in a nursing home, move them in with you, or hire an in home elder care company to take care of their day to day needs. Many people are only aware of the first 2 options, and often choose one of the two, despite the well-known challenges to each. Most people are aware of the common problems with putting an elderly family member in a nursing home. They get lonely there and the quality of care is often sub-standard.
Within the senior discussion group that I was part of we spoke about many different topics, but the one that resonated with me and that will continue to stay with me in the future. In class we spoke about the benefits and challenges of caregiving in both formal and informal care. As I mentioned previously, the leader of the discussion group, Miss A, told us that her mother was a formal caregiver at a old age longterm facility (“The Challenges and Benefits of Caregiving”, 2015). Miss A told us of her mothers experiences as a caregiver in the particular facility that she worked at. She said that the most significant benefit of providing care was the feeling of giving back to the older generation. She expressed that the
During these last 9 weeks, I have learned a lot about the workplace. With the readings assigned to us in class and my time at Bickford Assisted Living, the skills I have accumulated with aid me in my future career as they have given me the knowledge of how to make informed decisions. As well, this opportunity has allowed me to understand, from firsthand experience, what it is like working with seniors.
