“A test of a people is how it behaves toward the old. It is easy to love children. But the affection and care for the old, the incurable, the helpless, are the true gold mines of a culture.” –Abraham Joshua Heschel. I decided to do my senior project on becoming a certified nursing assistant because I believe CNA’s go beyond their limits for their patients. This is in honor of all CNA’s who work hard to care for the sick and elderly.
The first step to understand your role as a CNA is to know the difference between a hospital setting and a nursing center. Hospitals provide emergency care, surgeries, and laboratory testing. They care for people of all types of ages and all scenarios. Hospital patients have three types of illness: acute, chronic, or terminal. Acute illness is a sudden illness from which someone is likely to recover. Chronic illness is an on-going illness which there is no known cure. Terminal illness is an illness or injury from which a patient is expected to expire. On the other hand, long term care centers are designed to meet the needs of people who no longer can care for themselves but do not need hospital care. These people are called residents upon their entrance. Care centers provide residents with the right medical, nursing, rehabilitative, recreational, and social services. Nursing centers meet the needs of all kinds of residents from alert, oriented, confused, short term, life long, mentally ill, terminally ill, to persons needing complete care. Besides the differences hospitals and nursing centers have similar standards. They must protect and promote patients or residents rights. Both require high quality care, and a clean and safe setting. ...shift is the last shift of the day. It’s from 10 to 6 am or 11 to 7 am. Night crew turns and positions the patients or residents every hour or two depends on the care plan. They make four rounds at night usually one at the beginning of the shift, at twelve, two, and at five before the shift ends. Night shift cleans and sanitizes the wheelchairs, handlebars, doors, and day to day equipment used. All the shifts have the same purpose to keep the helpless safety and as clean as possible.
In conclusion, being a CNA is hard work and takes a kind heart to do this job. From my experience I have learned CNA’s are not just CNA’s, they play an important role in patients and residents lives. They are there when times get rough, when the lonely needs a companion, when the hurt needs comfort, when family absence causes pain. Certified Nursing Assistants are angels in disguise.
