The shortages in healthcare continue to increase as the baby boomer generation ages throughout the United States. Not only does this affect the public but also the health care worker as they will be reaching the retirement age as well. With this demand increasing, the human resource management departments are seeking a new way to attract and retain new employees. One area that is experiencing a shortage is the profession of the nurse. Many times as is often seen in a hospital, when the economy takes a turn for the worse and people are often struggling to survive, many hospitals will employ temporary nurses, according to the Journal of Nursing Scholarship (2016). This profession is described as persons who provide personal care and daily activities for people living in their own homes. The common age for the persons who receive these services is generally 65 years and older. This profession is likely to have a shortage due to the expanding life expectancy and the increasing age of the baby boomer generation. Many people want to stay in their homes as long as possible rather than enter long-term care facilities. For agencies to understand what would retain their workers, an academic research was completed on HSW in Canada and the United States. The information gathered found that there are four areas that are important to the home service worker: compensation, education and training, quality assurance, and working conditions (Keefe, Knight, Martin-Matthews, & Le'gar'e, 2011). Compensation relates to the low wages in comparison to a colleague that may be employed in a facility as well as any benefits that may or may not be available. Education and training, most of Canada requires college level education for an HSW, however, in the U.S. this is not always the case (Keefe, et al., 2011). Long-term care (LTC) covers a wide range of clinical and social services for those who need assistance due to functional limitations. These limitations usually result from complications associated with age related chronic conditions, from disabilities related to birth defects, brain damage, or mental retardation in children; or from major illnesses or injuries suffered by adults (Shi L. & Singh D.A., 2011). LTC encompasses a variety of services including traditional clinical services, social services and housing. Unlike acute care, long-term care is much more complicated and has objectives that are much harder to measure. Acute care mainly focuses on returning patients to their previous functional level and is primarily provided by specialty providers. However, LTC mainly focuses on preventing the physical and mental deterioration of an individual and promoting social adjustments to suit the different stages of decline. In addition the providers of LTC are more diverse than those in acute care and is offered in both formal and informal settings, which include: hospitals, physicians, home care, adult day care, nursing home care, assisted living and even informal caregivers such as friends and family members. Long-term care services have been dominated by community based services, which include informal care (86%, about 10 to 11 million) and formal institutional care delivered in nursing facilities (14%, 1.6 million) (McCall, 2001). I think that home health care is an excellent option for patients who still want to be independent and they are able to do it from home. They are still provided the quality care they need from skilled workers in the privacy of their own homes. This option is also cost effective and provides jobs for home health aides and people who have experience in the specialty areas. HIM home care positions require knowledge of finance, quality improvement, utilization review, and information systems, and as HIM evolves I think home health care will open up more positions for HIM employees. HIM professionals can contribute greatly to the future business planning of home care.
