Every manager wants nothing more than to see their organization succeed and an important part of their organizations succeeding is that their employees are completing their duties to their fullest potential. When thinking of ways to get the server to agree that a problem exists, I would begin by asking the server questions about his or her nightly routine when closing the restaurant.
As the server leaves out vital details, I would begin to question as to why those details are not getting done, and ask the server what he or she thinks may happen if they are not completed. This can be supported by a statement made in the text that says, “The supervisor needs to ask the employee questions designed to extract a statement of the problem behavior and its consequences. This approach ensures that an employee understands the situation.” (Werner & DeSimone, Pg. 337). After having a discussion with the server in hopes of agreeing that a problem exists, and the server still refuses to acknowledge that problems existent, then I believe I would have to turn to the disciplinary option of consequences. It is with high hopes that once the server is faced with the consequences of not only not completing the required tasks, but even not acknowledging that a problem existed, that an agreement of resolving the issue will

When dealing with this situation I would select the option of mutually discussing alternative solutions to the problem. I believe that employees will work better when they feel involved they have a voice and are involved in some decision making choices. During this discussion, I would allow for the server to come up with some alternative ideas on how to improve the store-closing operations. In an online article titled, “6 Tips to Conduct One-on-Ones with Difficult Employees”, it states, “Employers should encourage employees to disclose how they view the issues by listening and not interrupting.” (Geese Blog, 2013). Allowing the server the opportunity of explaining themselves and developing ways to maybe remember the store-closing operations will hopefully motivate them to accomplish these duties. 3. Lessons Learned Before beginning this assignment I was unaware of the responsibilities of a manager who serves as a coach. For instance, it states in the textbook that, “Managers who are effective coaches are more knowledgeable about employee performance and can help employees adjust to changes in goals, task, and expectations.” (Werner & DeSimone, Pg. 352). Based on the ways the text has described how management who serve as coaches affects employees performance, I plan to incorporating these coaching methods in the future.
