In unit seven we learned a lot about the job process. I actually learned a lot of things that I didn’t know before. For instance, I learned that companies offering jobs don’t necessarily have to take any applicants, and that they actually go through contacts to find a suitable person not as much as resumes. This really surprised me, whenever I think of the job market I think of applying for a job, handing out a resume, and interviewing. I never once thought that the companies and businesses offering jobs may look to social media and contacts instead. It truly changed my idea about what I would do to find a job after college. I would of course still apply and polish up my resume, but I would also turn to social media a lot more. It also made me think a bit more about how I present myself on social media, since many companies and businesses are turning to social media this means that I would have to make sure that all my social media posts are posted with a great deal of care, and kindness. …show more content…
This really inspired me to go through my posts and presence on social media, I went through and made sure that I made my presence in photography really well known, and showed that I was business like and professional. I really think doing things like this is really important because if employers look at your social media and see that you post anything bad they might get the idea that you don’t care about jobs, you're unsuited for the job, or just get a bad idea about you. My mother once told me to take pictures during a family picnic. That was the day I discovered the art of photography. I found it fascinating how an image could be capable of sharing an entire story. What started out as a hobby, ended up becoming a life-long passion that has allowed me to develop into a more capable individual. When I saved up and bought my first camera, I read vast amounts of photography books and watched countless internet tutorials, in an attempt to teach myself how to become a good photographer. I would then use what I had learned and go outside, for hours at a time, and take pictures of the world around me. I even had the opportunity to practice commercial photography and graphic designing for various public events. These experiences have made a deep impact on my character. Growing up, I was reluctant to work with others, especially in school. Maybe because I was a natural introvert, I believed that in order for something to be done right, I had to complete it on my own and asking others for help was a sign of weakness. However, when complex situations arose during photo-shoots, I realized how lucky I was to be working and collaborating with talented individuals. By sharing the responsibility and by having confidence in my team, the quality of my work drastically improved, and in turn, I thrived in such an environment. It really was a surprise to me how photography has taught me the value of placing trust in others.

As the economy is recovering from a recent recession, job seekers are taking up to search for employment; many businesses are utilizing social media to target outside talent to employ (Pay Attention, 2008). With emerging markets, companies are transitioning in these markets once they seal the deal, social media aids in boosting firms’ image and status (Pay Attention, 2008). When businesses experience a heightened return on investment, they use different forms of social media to document their revenue and how employees receive benefits from the company’s good fortune (Anson, 2012).
Social media sites are now finding their way into workplace. Now, social media sites are not just a place where you post photos of your pets wearing cowboy hats. Human Resource professionals now see Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook as an avenue for finding and recruiting promising potential employees. A survey carried out by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) revealed that 77% of firms use social media when selecting candidates for positions. (Global HR Research, 2015). However, weighing the benefits and risk of using social media in hiring decision making is a significant risk that professionals advice should be considered when designing a recruitment strategy. According to a research from the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) and ACAS, approximately half (45%) of human resource decision-makers now make use of social media tools when recruiting; with a further 16% planning to do so in the future (ACAS, 2013).
This idea was reinforced through the completion of an assignment that required me to establish a social media presence to engage with others. Many recruiters can find their ideal candidate by searching for key terms that may match individual’s background or show up on their personal profile (Blacksmith & Poeppelman, 2013). Although this process may make it easier for recruiters to scout potential employees, the method has its limitations. Recruiters are basing their decisions off of information provided by the unknown individuals, information that could potential be false. When deciding to have a social media presence, it is important to do so wisely. Firstly, when focusing so much on a virtual world, it is easy to neglect fundamental skills, such as communication which helps us succeed in the physical world.
