In today’s rapidly growing global society, foreign relations with other countries are imperative to a nation’s prosperity and world-wide harmony. Especially with China, the fastest growing country in the world, it is important for Canada to establish relations that can benefit both countries. The foundation of these Sino-Canadian relations was created by Norman Bethune’s involvement in the Second Sino-Japanese War. China was not always such a flourishing and prosperous society. In 1937, during this war, Japan invaded China with imperialist objectives. It wrought lurid death and destruction upon Chinese lands, leaving 20 million dead and 15 million injured between the years of 1937 and 1945. Dr. Norman Bethune was at the forefront of the aid …show more content…
Norman Bethune’s legacy in China also proved significant in the development of Canada’s official political ties with China. In 1972, after Canada’s erection of diplomatic relations with China on October 13, 1970 under the Trudeau government, Canadian Foreign Minister Mitchell Sharp led a Canadian trade delegation to China to meet with Premier Zhou Enlai. During this trip, Sharp also travelled to Shijiazhuang, China, where he recognized the significant contribution to Canada-China relations of Norman Bethune. This trip demonstrated that even though Canada and China were completely different nations that were separated by an ocean, they still had the respect and heraldry for Norman Bethune in common. The legacy of Bethune had created a mutual solid foundation from which diplomatic ties could flourish. This visit was a success and as a result also paved way to another one in 1973, by Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau. In his visit in 1973, Trudeau became the first Canadian Prime Minister to pay an official visit to the People’s Republic of China. In this visit, Trudeau was able to establish further diplomatic relations with China through his meeting with Chairman Mao Zedong. The two leaders discussed the relationship of their countries, economic reforms, and foreign affairs. Both leaders showed respect and goodwill toward the other; as was televised nationally in China. Viewers tuned in across the nation to this historic visit and to see their hero’s country …show more content…

The years since the Battle of Vimy Ridge may have passed quickly, but the legacy of the Canadians whose accomplishments were great in that pivotal First World War battle lives on. Many people claim to this day that Canada came of age as a country on those hard April days in 1917. At first, through the meticulous planning of the battle, the world saw a nation capable of working together and making decisions as a team. Afterwards, with the range of technical and tactical innovations involved in the attack, the world saw a strong nation unafraid to protect and defend. In the end, through great sacrifice the world bore witness to the birth of the Canadian legacy. To conclude that the nation was born on April 9th 1917, on the Artois plains is to deny over three centuries of history during which the ancestors of millions of Canadians devoted their lives to building the country. This is why the Battle of Vimy Ridge wasn’t the birth of Canada itself, but the birth of our legacy- the ‘true’ origin of our nation.

The Chanak affair of 1922 was a major event, and one of the earliest signals that Canada wanted to establish autonomy. The affair took place in Chanak, Turkey. The dispute involved Turks and the British. During the course of the affair, British troops were outnumbered; they were in need of more troops, so they requested Canada’s help. Unlike previously where Canada was automatically at war when Britain declared war, Prime minister King who was in power at that time, insisted that he would have to consult the parlia...

The Government of Canada is very active in fostering relations with the United States, and has expanded its U.S. consular presence to help enlarge and secure the trade relationship.
It was December 8th, 1941, the day after the attack in Pearl Harbour, that the Canadian government imposed the War Measures Act which changed the lives of more than 21000 Japanese Canadians forever (Paolini). The War Measures Act allowed the government to impose certain conditions on the population in times of crisis. This gave the government the power to intern the Japanese-Canadians during World War Two. These Japanese-Canadians were first tar...

China's record of human rights violations is long and mind-boggling. Atrocities such as purging tens of millions of people during the Cultural Revolution, its infamous one-child-per-couple Population Policy, persistent oppression of Tibet and the bloody June 4 massacre at Tienanmen Square in 1989 have given the Chinese government a reputation of having little respect for human life. And yet, despite its tarnished record, China maintains its Most Favoured Nation trade status with the US and is one of Canada's top ten recipients of bilateral trade. As supposed supporters of human rights, Canadian and US governments have developed hypocritical attitudes toward China, compromising ethical values for material gain. Instead, North American nations should restrict aid and trade with China to programs that can be used to encourage social reforms.
Canada and China are very different States and are run by very different forms of government. The basic underlying difference between the two governments is the location of sovereignty in the counties. In China it seems as though the people do play a large part in the government, but after studying it, it is evident that the power really rests with the Communist party and the dictatorship. While in Canada the people popularly elect their representatives who elect their Prime Minister.

As mentioned, the ROC and the USSR were perturbed by Nixon’s visit. After the Nationalist Party lost their war against the Communist Party, the ROC moved to Taiwan and remained the official representative of China in the UN, and to most of the western powers. The normalization of the Sino-American relationship indicates the ROC lost their official position as “China” in the global arena. The USSR, the Communist ally of the PRC, had a close relationship with the PRC when it was formed. However, after the USSR implemented the hostile policies such as Brezhnev Doctrine and the Encirclement approach against China, their relationship with China became more

My thoughts on the relationships with Canadians and non-Canadians is pretty good. The reason is because there are people from other countries who choose to live here. And they have even share some of their culture by opening up restaurants and spas. Some people even show dances from their countries. For example the theater show Shen Yun is an ancient Chinese dance show that is held in Toronto every year. There’s even a district in Toronto called China Town. China Town is a district in Toronto where you can take a walk and get a little bit of a feel what it’s like to live in China. People from places like Sweden open up a Spa that offers massages in a very comfortable. People from Japan do the same thing. One thing that they offer is a pool
