As we all know, nocturnal animals are more active at night than daytime. These animals sleep or resting during daytime and hunt their food at night. They have special adaptation that helps them to survive at night. They prefer to come out at night to escape the daytime heat though some nocturnal animals can be seen during the day and others spend the whole day resting or sleeping.

Surprisingly, the most important sense for nocturnal animals is the sense of sight or their vision. As nocturnal animals relay in this sense only, their night vision is myopic or short range. The amphibians, nocturnal snakes, and nocturnal birds are all have good night vision. To collect more light, their eyes must be large with increase retinal surface, larger lens and wider pupils. Nocturnal animal’s retina contains photoreceptor nerve cells called rods and cones just like land vertebrates. The denser the cone cells, the sharper the vision in daylight. Diurnal animals are best example of it. In contrast, nocturnal animals have lots of rods which are effective to provide good night vision; however, they are color blind. In general, nocturnal animal’s retina is packed with rods. Many nocturnal animals rely on their sense of hearing. The ear reaches its highest degree of development and most species improved the outer ear or pinna. Gregarious nocturnal animals rely on sound to communicate with their group members. Many nocturnal animals find the sense of smell a very important one. They use it for locating food, danger or mate. This is sometimes describes as the first stage of chemical discrimination. And also smell is closely allied in sense of taste. The sense of taste is considered as the second stage. It has an ability to detect and respond to dissolved molecules and ions.
