Paragraph 3 talks shortly about how during the 3 watches of the night one should always practice meditation. I quote from the scripture “In the third watch, you should get up and, either walking or sitting, continue to practice yoga, with a pure mind and controlled senses” (Scriptures 99). That quote above talks about how during the regular endeavors we partake in we must always remain on the idea of yoga. The line that caught my attention and made me think was the line that stated, “Keep the wandering mind focused completely on one thing” (Scriptures 99). The memoir Night, by Elie Wiesel, is Wiesel’s story from surviving the Holocaust with the help of his father and fighting to stay alive day by day. Wiesel suffered from brutal conditions in labor camps and managed to survive through the agony while watching others perished every day. The unnatural behavior by the S.S. led to dehumanization that shattered the faith of Elie Wiesel and many other prisoners.
The first concept of Living Buddha, Living Christ that was the most important to me was the concept of mindfulness. Mindfulness was particularly interesting to me because it isn’t something that is thought of in daily life. It is a concept that you unconsciously think about, and you are never truly aware of what you are doing until you accept it. My favorite part of mindfulness was how the author described Buddhism. He described it as “we sit, we walk, we eat” and that is a very blunt statement. Although the statement is blunt, it opened up my eyes to see that mindfulness does not require excessive thought like I had assumed. Excessive thought is something that is not a part of mindfulness, and it relates to what the book said about the past. If you worry about the past or future, you’re wasting time. I love the idea of living in the present, not the cliché type, but I love the idea that the past and the future can only hurt you. You are never truly aware of what is going on within you and around you until you focus on the present. If you do everything with mindfulness, you will always see the beauty that surrounds you. Reading his meditation make me think about how it is important to think about what is true and what is false. I think that he was making one see the importance of questioning one’s senses about whether it is false. It is also important that one does not become too skeptical about things.
