Recommended: Social impact of new media on society

The impact that new media has on society is apparent though various community based forums, user oriented video hosting websites, and user managed blogs. People are straying from more traditional forms of information and resort to using new media technologies as a source of reliable information. The increase in usage of new media plays a pivotal part in shaping the society of this century. The evolution of social media websites brought forth a negative outcome. Social networking websites such as MySpace and Facebook have become a normal occurrence to find associates or coworkers on. A major transition from traditional forms of information to new media is the creation of video hosting websites such as YouTube. These video hosting websites caused an increase of regular people reporting on headlining events and as a result causing a surge of unreliable information for the viewers. Viewers overlook more traditional forms of information reported by actual journalist and take in fictional instead of factual information. The advancement of new media is detrimental for society in every way.
First of all, as today’s society progresses the source of information has changed from more traditional sources to being received from new media sources such as the internet or other often unreliable sources. The advancing in technology caused an emergence of a new source of information which has caused implications for society. “Our cell phones are not simply telecommunications devices t, they also allow us to play games, download information from the internet, and take and send photographs or text messages.” (Jenkins 465).The advancement of new media changed the way in which society receives, interprets, and responds to information. ...edn’t share. For example, “intimacies that were once whispered into the phone are now announced unabashedly into cell phones as loud running conversations in public places. Diaries once sealed are now called blogs and posted daily.” (Williams 473).
Consequently, new media of the future will future a prominent role in providing information as it is occurring. People will engage in fierce competition to cover a news story first. Information will be spread rapidly like a wildfire. Events will be covered as it occurs and relayed to other parts of the world instantly. Gone are the days were reporters are the experts on an event. Information will be covered by ordinary people for people in society to comprehend. News will become a more opinionated fact. Overall the world will become a place where people resort to doing just about anything for a chance at instant fame.

    Are technology and the media shedding the very fabric of the existence we have known? As technology and the media spread their influence, the debate over the inherent advantages and disadvantages intensifies. Although opinions vary widely on the subject, two writers offer similar views: Professor Sherry Turkle, director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self, in her article “Can You Hear Me Now” and Naomi Rockler-Gladen, who formerly taught media studies at Colorado State University, with her article “Me Against the Media: From the Trenches of a Media Lit Class.” Turkle asserts that technology has changed how people develop and view themselves, while at the same time affecting their concepts of time management and focus (270). Similarly, Rockler-Gladen believes media and its inherent advertising have had a profound effect on the values and thinking of the public (284). I could not agree more with Professor Turkle and Ms. Rockler-Gladen; the effects technology and media have worried and annoyed me for quite so time. The benefits of technology and media are undeniable, but so then are the flaws. People are beginning to shift their focus away from the physical world to the virtual world as they find it easier and more comfortable. The intended purpose of technology and media was to be a tool to improve the quality of life, not shackles to tie people to their devices. I no longer recognize this changed world and long for the simple world of my youth.
