Hiba Shaikh Mr. Hill Rhetoric 101 - 6 14 September 2015 Hypnotized By Technology Working thesis: The advancements in technology have caused the social norms of society to adapt to its rapid change, by becoming captivated to its simple access; which is effecting the way we communicate and act. Bissell, Tom. "Extra Lives: “Why Video Games Matter.” They Say / I Say 2nd Ed. Birkenstein, Cathy, Russel Durst, and Gerald Graff New York: W.W. Norton & Company, (2012). 349-361. Print. In his article, “Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter,” author Tom Bissell utilizes pathos to explain the extra life our society is born into when dealing with gaming, making us forget everything happening around us. Bissell gives many examples of his own life and …show more content…
explains that he lost himself into games such as “Grand Theft Auto” and “Fallout 3,” which made him zone out everything around him; such as missing Obama’s presidency. He also explains the internal conflicts he had with himself, constantly realizing that all the hours he spent playing these games were not worth it; but does not understand why he keeps losing himself into these games. I would use this in my essay to depict that our generation becomes too involved in technology, such as video games, and does not realize what is happening around them. Also, I would include how this obsession effects the way our generation communicates with one another. Chast, Roz. "The I.Ms of Romeo and Juliet.” They Say / I Say 2nd Ed. Birkenstein, Cathy, Russel Durst, and Gerald Graff New York: W.W. Norton & Company, (2012). 347. Print. Chast Roz, the author/illustrator of “The I.Ms of Romeo and Juliet” uses imagery and slang to mock our generation’s method of communicating with each other.
Chast shows two young teens on their laptop, chatting with each other while they are sitting in the same room, separated by a text box. By using slang in the dialogue, Chast is implying that our society’s communication skills are becoming lazy and incorrect in terms of grammar. Also, his dialogue contrasts entirely with the work of William Shakespeare, who uses complex language, unlike Chast who uses abbreviations. The picture depicts that teens are blinded by technology and do not focus on other important things such as communal relationships with family and friends. I would use this in an essay to display the lack of face to face communication that is developing in today’s world. To continue, I would argue that the diminishing use of verbal communication is a disadvantage rather than an …show more content…
advantage. Gladwell, Malcolm. "Small Change: “Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted” They Say / I Say. 2nd Ed. Birkenstein, Cathy, Russel Durst, and Gerald Graff New York: W.W. Norton & Company, (2012). 312-327. Print. In his essay, “Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted,” Malcolm Gladwell argues that social media is an inappropriate tool for revolutionary movements when compared to people physically uniting and making a change. Malcolm Gladwell describes many examples of protests, and observes that there was no social media involved in these events. He noticed that the protests seemed to be stronger, because of the people attending had emotional bonds, and it was more organized. Gladwell uses examples such as the story of the four freshmen at the Greensboro lunch counter, which brought validity to his argument. He proves social networking websites are not a form of organization to make social change, but rather just a way to communicate. I would use this in my essay to argue that protests are more effective than social media to begin a movement, and to display the laziness of our generation of using technology to fix a problem, rather than physically getting up and doing something about. I would also argue that society is too dependent on technology to solve all problems. Stevens, Dana. “Thinking Outside the Idiot Box.” They Say / I Say 2nd Ed. Birkenstein, Cathy, Russel Durst, and Gerald Graff New York: W.W. Norton & Company, (2012). 295-298. Print. Dana Stevens, in her article “Thinking Outside the Idiot Box,” mocks Steven Johnson’s idea that TV makes us smarter, though it only acts as a way to relax our brain, and has no purpose of enhancing our knowledge.
Stevens uses many of her own opinions to make her argument convincing, and relatable. She attacks Johnson’s view on TV calling it “completely bogus.” Stevens states that our society watches a show and only thinks about what will happen in the next episode, rather than learning a lesson and taking away something important from it. An example she used is the show “24” and explained how this series helps others be aware of their surroundings, but in the end the audience is not being informed and is not using the information in the show in the real world. I would use this in my essay to demonstrate that although technology has its advantages, it is hypnotizing our society in a way that makes us unsocial with friends family, and make us lazy. I would also argue that too much technology results in a lack of physical activity, and social
interaction.
“Just One More Game…: Angry Birds, Farmville, and Other Hyper Addictive Stupid Games” summarizes what today’s society focuses on. Sam Anderson, the writer of this essay, talks about his viewpoint on the impact of video games and smart phone games on our society.
Jane mcgonical instantly dismisses the thought of video games being "mind-numbing waste of time" by telling readers video games fulfill human needs. Mcgonical avoids several
The topic of technology and our society has become a very controversial subject today. Many people believe that technology is an essential component of our modern world, helping us to improve communication from farther distances as well as giving us easy access to important information. On the other hand, there is the opinion that too much technology is affecting social interactions and our basic development. “Technology…is a queer thing, it brings you great gifts with one hand, and stabs you in the back with the other.” (Carrie Snow.) The CBC Documentary “Are We Digital Dummies” displayed the pros and cons when it comes to modern technology that we use in the western world everyday.
Technology has changed our world dramatically over the last several decades. Several generations before us did not have air conditioning, telephones, television much less internet. However, today we have access to all of this and more. Technological advances have not only made changes in how we communicate, but also in how everyday tasks are done. The New York Times explains how social media affects children’s behavior and academics, and how the concept of dating has been altered while Louis C. K. explains how the 21st century takes little things for granted and YouTube channel charstarlineTV shows how daily activities can no longer be done without the use of cellphones.
In most games, players often find themselves combating an enemy that can either be the computer, a player on the other side of the world or even themselves. In any case, both players argue that he or she should be victorious and the other should not. In Anderson’s article, he purposely injects the views of an opponent who believes that gaming provides beneficial applications to one’s, or another’s, life.

We should develop games that people want to spend time on that are also educational, increasing the attention span of people, visual acuity, and multitasking abilities of all generations. The author very effectively portrays her message of by connecting with her audience charismatically, visually, personally, and logically. In the age of technology we must come to terms with the changing hobbies and daily activities around us. Rather than passing them off as bad campaigning for them to be cut back, censored, we should be focusing on the good that is already done by video games and how we could continue to improve
In society’s current era of technological advancement, video games have gone a long way since they were first created. Video games in the twenty-first century are no longer just toys or junk in the lifestyles of the youth. They have become innovative inventions that not only entertain its users, but also help aid the people in both the academic field and in jobs. The influences that video games bring about in the culture of the youth today are, in fact, not the negative influences that most people think. Video games are actually this generation’s new medium for educating the youth. The information they learn are also mostly positive and useful things that they may apply in their future lives (Prensky 4). In a generation that revolves around technology and connectivity, developers and educators have already been able to produce fun and interesting games that can teach and train people. Video game developers and educators should continue to collaborate in order to create more positive, educational, and appealing games.
“We barely have time to pause and reflect these days on how far communicating through technology has progressed. Without even taking a deep breath, we’ve transitioned from email to chat to blogs to social networks and more recently to twitter” (Alan 2007). Communicating with technology has changed in many different ways. We usually “get in touch” with people through technology rather than speaking with them face to face. The most popular way people discuss things, with another individual, is through our phones. Phones have been around way before I was born in 1996, but throughout the years, they have developed a phone called a “smart phone”. The smart phone has all kinds of new things that we can use to socialize with our peers. On these new phones, we can connect with our friends or family on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Technology has also developed Skype, a place you can talk with people on the computer with instant voice and video for hours. The new communication changes have changed drastically from the new advances made in technology through our smart phones, social networking sites, and Skype.
The standard 21 year old adults have exchanged 250 thousand emails, spent 5 thousand hours video gaming and 10 thousand hours using their mobile devices (Lei, 2009). When people hear the word technology, they think of microwaves, televisions, cars, NASA, different types and transportation and more. For all that, technology has occurred long ahead these discoveries. Technology is an arguable matter amongst people. .In the old days, people lived an extremely simple life without technology. They used candles to light their houses and lanterns at the dark to travel, they used fire to cook and used newspapers and mail to share news. On the other hand, technology has seized an important place in our society. People are living in a stage of progressive technology. They are using all natural reserves applicable for making their lives better and easier. The society cannot picture life without electricity since it allows them to live through their everyday life. This paper argues that technology positively impacts people’s lives.
Today, Americans are faced with the increasing change of technology in our everyday life. Sometimes the change happens and we do not realize how it affects our lives. I think it is always a good idea to talk to someone that is older than yourself, like your grandparents to remind you of the times in their younger years. Hopefully, that will open your eyes to the changes we face in this generation and the generation to come. In this chapter, the author explores the relationship of changing technology to changes in both the environment and social institutions.
Technology is changing how we think and act at younger ages. The term “technology” doesn’t only mean manufacturing processes and equipment necessary for production, it also defines a social space and could be a social problem which makes a real impact on social reality. Different types of social software affect a variety of aspects and have both positive and negative impacts. It's important to be aware of how a digitally-driven life is changing our education, sense of self, relationships, social interaction, consumerism, and ways of doing business around the world.
People in the present society have turned from the use of the old means of communication to the more advanced and technological ways of communicating. Technology has made it easier for people to communicate in a faster, efficient, and cost saving means through the introduction of the communication channels. The world has turned out to be the centre for technology with different technologies emerging daily as the people continue to develop from time to time to cope with the growing technology. The benefits of adopting the communication technology are explained in this article which shows why people do not function without technology.
Technology has changed modern society drastically, both positively and negatively. Technology has influenced every aspect of our life, making it simpler but not necessarily better. Albert Einstein was concerned about the advancement of technology. "I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction."1 Undoubtedly, what has changed the most are communication, the spread of information, and how business is practiced. Consequently, practically everyone knows how to use a computer, connect to the Internet, or use a smartphone. This is demonstrated by the way the Internet is used daily by millions of people to communicate, to sell, advertise, retrieve, and share information. Thanks to the Internet, information from anywhere in the world is at our fingertips. As a result, the advancement of technology has changed our life in many ways including; sharing of information, communication, business, education, social interaction, simplifying everyday tasks, replacing basic skills and jobs.
The first area where technology and society relates most is communication. People in a society must pass information from one person to another to maintain order. Traditionally, information dissemination was done using inefficient methods such as the messengers and would take long time before it reached to the intended recipient depending on the distance. Technological advancement that resulted in introduction of more efficient means of communication such as mobile phones and computers led to contextualization of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT). This had a direct impact on the society as now information could be disseminated amongst a larger group and in the contemporary wo...
