Introduction
Organizational leaders across the world need to be self aware of their own negative leadership behavior in order to improve and combat the issue. Most leaders have been promoted or hired into their management roles because they are highly competent and have proven themselves to be successful (Brusman, 2011). In general, negative leadership behavior is the result of poor communication skills and lack of emotional intelligence on the part of the leader (Brusman, 2011). In order for a leader to improve their negative leadership behavior they need to realize when they have made a mistake and strive to not make the same mistake twice.
The Experience
In my current position as a technician for a large telecommunications company I observe negative leadership behavior from my supervisor on a weekly basis. My supervisor holds team meetings once a week to discuss topics ranging from team productivity all the way to our customer experience. Every week my supervisor gets extremely upset and tends to lose his temper and yell at our team when our team as a whole doesn’t reach a specific number of productivity points coupled with a low repeat rate. On a weekly basis my supervisor then threatens to take away the company vehicle privilege of anyone on our team who doesn’t make their productivity and repeat numbers. This is a vicious cycle that I’ve observed every week since joining my supervisor’s team.

Keeping a calm, cool, and collected attitude, even when curveballs are thrown, signifies a strong leader. When an egregious amount of errors or flaws occur during a project, a poor leader will be effected by it negatively and lose control of their team. A poor leader gets frustrated, angry, or even depressed during periods of struggles. An effective leader, notwithstanding, remains composed, and they will not allow even the worst of setbacks to affect their leadership style.
It takes a long time to become an effective and respected leader but can evaporate very quickly with one misstep. It needs to be nurtured and cultivated every day. My personal leadership style is to observe and correct. As a junior member, one of my Chief told me, “I don’t care how long it takes you to do a job as long as you do it right the first time because if it is wrong you will be the one fixing it.” That resonated with me because it allowed me to take risks and learn from my mistakes making me a better technician. I firmly believe one of the best learning tools is failure. His statement let me know it was all right to fail but if you do you will be learning from it. Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or an organization. Leadership is leading a group of people or company to reach a result or further and the organization. A leader is supposed to be an example of how all employees are expected to act and what they should be striving for. Good leaders also don’t use their position within a company to take advantage of the company and its employees. A good leader is supposed to be able to perform their job with high standards, efficiency, and honor. However, for every good leader, there are bad leaders and the worse the leader the more detrimental he or she becomes to employees and the company they run. Leadership is supposed to guide people to attain a particular set vision. The learning obtained from the Leadership and Organizational Behavior course has been valuable. From this course, I have learned that while someone can be a manager or a leader, it is better to be both. The various topics discussed throughout the eight week course have provided the unique insight necessary to be an effective leader. The insight gained allow for the identification of the behaviors that an effective leader must possess and continually develop. By identifying these behaviors, I am better able to shape my leadership style and goals so that I can achieve my full career potential as a leader within my organization. Ultimately, I realize that it is important to both do things right and do the right things in all my actions within an organization.
When I was working in the hospital, I had a supervisor who did not quite understand what it took to be a leader. It felt as if she was part of the team rather than the leader of the team. She would gossip with her subordinates about other employees. There had been a time when I heard her call one of her employees an idiot when he was in the next room. She would also play favorites with the workers who would gossip with her. This created a division among her workers.
Organizations have leaders who are effective and ineffective. Many of us want to be leaders but, do we have what it takes to be effective or are we going to be ineffective. Leaders are people who build their organization and employees up. Ineffective leaders are those who only care about getting a check. This paper will discuss effective and ineffective leaders. The effective and ineffective leaders I have had the pleasure to work with.
There are many examples of poor leadership behavior in today’s workplace. Inadequate leadership can be detrimental not only to a team within an organization, but also to the entire organization itself. I believe it is vital for upper management to ensure that their leaders are properly trained and aware of how to handle certain situations and employees. When a leader’s weaknesses are overlooked, large problems occur.
Leader should have the shared responsibility and collaborative quality. For example, instead of making the strategy alone, he will gather the idea of all brilliant workers to increase the productivity of the organisation.
