The Negative Effects of Modern Technology and Social Media
Are Becoming Social Network Idiots?
Albert Einstein once said, “I fear the day when the technology overlaps with our humanity. The world will only have a generation of idiots.” Even though these words were spoken many years before technology took over the world, Albert Einstein seemed to be able to predict the future. Albert Einstein saw and was fearful that the growth of technology would someday affect the human race. Each and every single day, technology creates idiots. Technology has overpowered humanity, and the day has come when technology has taken over most human interaction. Just take a look at the everyday life of a human in a technological society. Everyone is either glued to an I phone or to an I pad. Whether it is driving a car, walking in the mall, or even spending a day with friends, society is glued to their technology. It has become a necessity to our lives and rather than a luxury. Humans just can’t seem to live a single day without checking their Face book, having their smart phone on hand, or tweeting their latest activity. Yes, Einstein was right that humans are becoming idiots as this modern technology is taking over how society speaks, writes, and carries on conversations. In fact, society is constantly using technology and even in some instances beginning to replace it with real life. Even though technology is a necessity and a great invention to the modern day society, the overuse of it has caused many negative effects on humans. The overuse of modern

... Albert Einsteen was certainly right when he said “when technology overlaps humanity, it will create a society of idiots.” Technology is a great tool, but when overused is causes lack communication, decrease in health, and an overall negative effect of our well being. Numerous studies show that social media is harming our society. Teens are

Beginning to show signs of depression. Studies also show that the more we use social media, the less satisfied we are with our lives. The decrease in human interaction is scary, and it is time society takes control and learns how to communicate the old fashion way. We have become a Society that has forgotten to speak our language, forgotten how to spell, and forgotten the use of proper grammar. Let us stop being a society of idiots and use technology to better mankind rather than ruin it.
Humans have been creating tools that allow us to be do things that would be otherwise impossible since the beginning of our existence. The ability to use and develop new tools is what sets us apart from all other animals. Yet it seems that ever since these tools started being created there were also people that feared these new tools and claimed that they are bad for the human race. The present fear of new technology is illustrated in the essay “Is Google Making us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr. In this essay Carr argues that the internet and other new technologies are changing the way we think in a negative way. Carr claims that new technology is making our generation stupid. In opposition the article “Smarter Than You Think” by Clive Thompson
I agree with Ray Bradbury, humanity is doomed. Technology has created so many problems, so rapidly, that humans cannot respond to the changes. Technology has become a tool that makes our lives easier, but the negative effects are far too overpowering, making it almost impossible to stop it before it is too late. Examples from “The Veldt,” and “There Will Come Soft Rains,” show the potential dangers that technology could bring. It may seem unbelievable, but just as George Hadley said, “This is a little too real, but I don’t see anything wrong,” (Bradbury 1). Humans cannot see the problem, only past it. Global warming, antibiotic overuse, overpopulation, and modern warfare, are just a few of the threats technology bestows upon us.
Technology Is What You Make It The articles “How Computers Change the Way We Think” by Sherry Turkle and “Electronic Intimacy” by Christine Rosen argue that technology is quite damaging to society as a whole and that even though it can at times be helpful it is more damaging. I have to agree and disagree with this because it really just depends on how it is used and it can damage or help the user. The progressing changes in technology, like social media, can both push us, as a society, further and closer to and from each other and personal connections because it has become a tool that can be manipulated to help or hurt our relationships and us as human beings who are capable of more with and without technology. Technology makes things more efficient and instantaneous.
Although Though technology can be good, it can be worse than good, such as people always with their faces on their phones and headphones in their ears, people neglecting books and using more online text, and people wasting their lives watching TV.Children now know how to use a phone faster than they can
As people can probably see this today, technology is not only harming our attention spans, ability to efficiently complete tasks, and think and communicate, but also harms our abilities to communicate with one another. Although cell phones, tablets, and computers were made to supplement the user's life, they actually do more harm than good for our society, because of our ignorance to the harmfulness of it all. People can argue all they want about the good and bad sides of technology but the fact of the matter is change is needed, and our future generations can take a lot from what the Dalai Lama once said, "Real change in society must start from individual initiative."
Social media might help some people express how they feel. However, it makes us a self-centered culture. Technology made us more selfish and we have become more separate from people because we are shorthing texts and taking selfies all the time (Doc 7). We don’t even look up when someone is talking to us we don’t even look up from our phones and then we don’t build empathy from them. (Doc 3). It has also weakened our ability to focus on tasks because there are engineers programming your phone every minute to keep you on it (Doc 12). In overall technology is making all of us self-center by not noticing people when we talk to them and we can’t even focus on one task for long amount of time.
The use of social networking sites is rising at great rates. According to a report conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project in 2012, ninety-five percent of individuals aged 12-17 use the internet; and eighty-one percent of those use social network sites (Pew Interest). Although it is known that social media can have a useful impact on lives, often times people forget that with a positive comes a negative. The continual use of social network sites will impact teen lives more negatively than positively because they can cause huge distractions from valuable and critical pursuits like education; they can also cause mental health issues and a reduction in communication skills.
“I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.” The world’s highly respected genius, Albert Einstein, stated that without hesitation. Einstein’s quote is straight-forward as if he wanted to make his voice clear that this issue with technology is already heading towards an endless pit of disappointment. Some of those disappointment that Einstein have predicted are in media like movies and television, others in entertainment like games, and a main concern of many people, social media such as Facebook. This conversation about technology’s use has been argued and debated since the first advancement of technology; it is making our live easier which only lead us to become lazy. The
Technology is an important issue that my generation will face in the coming years if it is used inappropriately. Albert Einstein states his input on how technology will be an issue: “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots”. Many people say that technology will affect people’s ability to think properly and claims that we will have a generation of people who are ignorant compared to earlier generations. Technology has shaped how people live their lives on a regular basis and it defines my generation as the technology generation. Technology has changed how we do things in our daily lives and has become a large part of our daily lives and has impacted each
To begin with, social media has been proven to be a dangerous addiction due to the many negative side effects like: sleep deprivation, and self-esteem problems. Most of the adult American population is connected to some sort of social media site, and they have joined the banned wagon of people whom check their social media accounts at least five times a day. Using social media to often can be time consuming and essentially causes sleep deprivation because the user stays up late on social media. Since social media has grown in popularity many have began to believe that social media is a life necessity. It is viewed by many as a daily necessity like brushing our teeth, or yet as important as eating. People whom are constantly on social media have been linked to develop self-esteem problems because they are so consumed on pretending and portraying this image of a person they are not. Social media has became such an addiction that many people wake up and the first thing they do is...
Social media has impacted everyone that has used it some point in his or her life. Since the world is increasing in technology advances, so is social media which can be good and bad. Technology has made a huge difference in the world and definitely how people are doing things now. Yes, the Internet can be good for the majority of things we use it for such as finding research, keeping in touch with family or friends who are far away, and saving time and money. Others like to take advantage of social media and use it in a way that can hurt people; it may not hurt them physically, but it can hurt them emotionally. Examples of how some people use the Internet in a bad way include cyberbullying, identity theft, or cyberstalking. Social media has impacted the Millennial generation for sure.
Nowadays, it is not only common to have social media accounts such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, but expected. Many people know the numerous benefits of signing-up for these accounts: keeping in touch with friends, being able to organize information and photographs, keeping track of dates or news, and many more. However, new research suggests that the use of these social media networks, specifically Twitter, can cause great unhappiness in relationships (“Twitter use…”). It appears that the social media page can act as a third member of the relationship. The use of these networks can take up so much time of one or both of the partners, that it is like having another person in the relationship. Unfortunately, this loss of time as well as the other negative affects social media has on relationships, can lead to communication issues and arguments.
environment where increased critical thinking and collaboration are possible. A study done by Annetta and Jackson shows that students who participate in social media as part of a class feel more connected to their peers that those students who do not participate in social media type education (Annetta, Jackson, 2011). Social media allows students to not only group themselves with peers who are similar, but also to enhance and link existing peer groups. In addition to enhancing established peer groups, social media can bridge the diversity that exists in classrooms by establishing a “neutral zone” in which students can interact with one another. For many
Think of a time when people didn’t have technology and how they had to interact, whether it had been from writing letters to using telegraphs, communicating with people was hard to come by back then. Of course times have changed and now technology has made it easier over the years, social media has become an essential part of our life whether it be on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and many other websites. Now days everybody is using it whether its companies using media to promote its products or even teachers to tweet out what last night’s homework was. Social media is a great tool that helps us connect with the world and communicate our ideas. Yet there are some people who believe that social media has a negative impact towards our society as they believe that people can get addicted to it, it causes them to get easily distracted, and many other dangers. Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world.
Albert Einstein quoted, “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.” The use of technology today is affecting our future generations by introducing them fast into using technology. Children today are focusing more on Ipads, Ipods, smart phones, or other electronic devices, rather than focusing on their knowledge. In addition, toddlers are mastering using electronic devices before they can even speak. (Alison Lee, 2013) According to research conducted by Alison Lee, it has been shown that when her child was 17 months old, he could activate the television by the use of the remote control. Although, today’s technology has also abducted the minds of adults, and It makes them addicted to it. For example, due to careless driving and many causes of death accidents, this happens from people who use their electronic device while driving their vehicle. In fact, technology is being upgraded annually, and causing more people to get addicted to it. Today’s society is very addicted to technology, that studies indicated that 2013 is the year where some human beings have an internet disorder. In addition, people who have internet disorder suffer from this condition. However, people who are overly attached to the use of technology makes them more prone to anxiety, physiological disorders like cyber bullying, and clutched to that electronic device would dominate home life.
