With Hitler gaining power in the 1930’s, he needed to convince the German people that the Jews were an inferior race. The Nazi’s released copious amounts of propaganda. These advertisements were meant to create gaps in all areas of life between the Germans and the Jews. Much of this Nazi propaganda got collected and published in a book titled “The Eternal Jew” in 1937. I will be using a photograph from page 51 of this book. The picture depicts a Jewish artist looking at one of his sculptures. The opening line of Nazi propaganda is, “In sculpture even more than painting, Jews display their absolute lack of talent.” The Germans want to show that their race has superior artistic talent in comparison to the Jewish race. The German Nazi dictator utilized his power over the people using propaganda, eventually creating a sense of hatred towards Jews. After World War 1, the punishments of the League of Nations caused Germany to suffer. The Nazi party came to blame the Jews in order to have a nation-wide “scapegoat”. This hatred and prejudice towards Jews is known as anti-semitism. According to the Breman Museum, “the Nazi Party was one of the first political movements to take full advantage of mass communications technologies: radio, recorded sound, film, and the printed word” (The Breman Museum). By publishing books, releasing movies and holding campaigns against Jews, antisemitism came to grow quickly, spreading all across Germany. The Nazi Party often referred to the notion of a “People’s Community” where all of Germany was “racially pure” (Issuu). They would show images of ‘pure’, blond workers, labouring to build a new society. This appealed greatly to people who were demoralized during Germany’s defeat in World War 1 and the economic depression of the 1920’s and 1930’s. Hitler, along with Joseph Goebbels, used developed propaganda methods in order to suppress the Jews and spread anti semitism.
The movie begins by giving us a brief history of a painting. The painting they refer to is the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. It was still in its creative process at the time being painted by the artist Gustav Klimt. At this same point in time Adolf Hitler applied to the Vienna Academy of Art. This eighteen year old Hitler’s admission to the academy was rejected. The people deciding his admission were primarily Jewish and most likely fueled the flame to his anti-Semitism.

It shows this through its comic book style drawings on a topic that is difficult to explain. With the illustration throughout the story it shows the true meaning of a picture is worth a thousand words. Compared to any other type of Holocaust book it would be hard for a person who did not go through the Holocaust to understand what was taking place during that time. Most books are just written, no images. It is just a plain book with many descriptions. Unlike those "Maus" took on another type of perception. Humans have the ability to understand and reason things but with all of that it is hard to understand the extent of the Holocaust through just words. So Art decided to included drawings in a comic book form to allow readers to understand what was going on without having to imagine it. His book allowed its readers to see what was taking place while reading it. That is what the main difference is compared to other narratives. Also, his use of symbolism allowed the reading to understand what was going on without drawings of humans but animals. An example of this was the Nazis being represented by cats and the Jews represented as mice. In reality we know that the cat always tries to kill the mouse. Some of the opinions and mindsets that German citizens had may have been there even before the Nazis came into power and made it seemed like they were brainwashing people with their propaganda, but with what justification can it be said that Nazi propaganda had a psychological and psychoanalytic impact on the German population to a great extent, rather than it being the work of pre set psychological states of mind of people due to the Treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression, Hyperinflation, and other sources which may have led the German population to support and hold anti-semitistic and nationalistic ideologies.

Hitler wanted to establish an anti-Jewish policy, but at the same time he wanted to avoid violent actions which could negatively affect his rule. He came to a conclusion in March 1933, when he established a boycott against Jews in the business and professional world.
