Often art is lost or destroyed through out the many dangers of time. Art is sometimes used to convey thoughts or ideas of a time or people. If works are lost or destroyed we may lose important information from this time or the people who created the art. This matter is shown best in the movie titled The Rape of Europa. The movie begins by giving us a brief history of a painting. The painting they refer to is the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. It was still in its creative process at the time being painted by the artist Gustav Klimt. At this same point in time Adolf Hitler applied to the Vienna Academy of Art. The David was started in 1501 by Michelangelo Buonarroti. His sculpture was 17 foot tall. It was crafted from an abandoned block of marble. He started to sculpture to take up the challenge of others such as Donatello who had sculpted the same figure. The David sculpted in his statue is a person from the Bible. In the story David slays the giant Goliath and goes on to be a Hebrew King. According to pbs.org the David is described as, “a fit symbol of courage and civic duty to guard the city of Florence.” At Michelangelo’s time sculpture was acknowledged the finest form of art because it replicated divine creation. Also, this sculpture is considered to be a masterpiece. It was put up for public display in 1504 in the plaza of Florence. This plaza was also known as the Piazza della Signoria. To better protect the statue it was then moved to the Accademia delle Belle Arti in 1873. A copy was eventually made of the David and placed in Florence’s public plaza to replace the original. Along with the copy in Florence another replica was made of the statue in 1939 and placed in the Forest Lawn Cemetery of Glendale California. However this replica has a fig leaf placed near the genitals to censor it. Today many still debate whether it is appropriate or not to leave the statue in its original uncensored state in places like schools or where children may be present. Many works of art can be considered artifacts that hold volumes of information regarding the culture of the people that created them and the historical context in which they lived.
It shows this through its comic book style drawings on a topic that is difficult to explain. With the illustration throughout the story it shows the true meaning of a picture is worth a thousand words. Compared to any other type of Holocaust book it would be hard for a person who did not go through the Holocaust to understand what was taking place during that time. Most books are just written, no images. It is just a plain book with many descriptions. Unlike those "Maus" took on another type of perception. Humans have the ability to understand and reason things but with all of that it is hard to understand the extent of the Holocaust through just words. So Art decided to included drawings in a comic book form to allow readers to understand what was going on without having to imagine it. His book allowed its readers to see what was taking place while reading it. That is what the main difference is compared to other narratives. Also, his use of symbolism allowed the reading to understand what was going on without drawings of humans but animals. An example of this was the Nazis being represented by cats and the Jews represented as mice. In reality we know that the cat always tries to kill the mouse. Hitler himself bought hundreds of pieces every year to display, as he was highly involved in the selection process. Exhibits were mostly landscape and genre paintings, and no modern art was included (“Historical Documentation”). On the day following the opening of the museum, an exhibit was opened up across the street entitled “Entartete Kunst,” or “Degenerate Art.” This exhibit was a mocking and degrading display of works of modern art that the Nazis had confiscated right off the walls of other German museums (“Nazi Plunder”). These ideas all correlate with how we view World War II history and how Inglourious Basterds muddles our previous thoughts on how these events occurred. Many Americans have watered down the depiction of Jewish oppression during Nazi reign to swiftly round up concentration camps. What Quentin Tarantino and the Jewish film community wanted to illustrate through this film is how this is an incorrect overgeneralization. Inglourious Basterds illustrates more realistic Jewish life during Nazi reign and the constant terror they faced. This oppression was far more personal, intimate, and cordial yet brutal altercations invoked through self-defense and hatred.

The subject of Warhol 's Art ranged from celebrities to car crashes to even a can of soup, though this may seem unappealing Andy Warhol had a way of turning these basic things into Master works of art. However Leonardo da Vinci 's artwork is vastly superior and was based on a vast array of multiple subjects including not only humans but animals even inventions he made himself. "You can wipe out an entire generation, you burn their homes to the ground and somehow they will still find their way back. But if you destroy their history, you destroy their achievements and it as if they never existed"(Cambell,2014). During World War II the Nazis would go through the countries they occupied. The art they took was either put in their own museums or they burned them. The Nazis stole millions of pieces of art, mostly pieces that were made from the end of the of the 18th century up until the 1900 's. Hitler ordered his soldiers to steal the art to gain power over other cultures. At the end of the war, the Allies were on a hunt to find all the missing and stolen art the Nazis hid at the end of the war. The big debate today is if the stolen art should go back to their rightful owners. Over a span of six years, the Nazis stole millions of paintings the trails to get those back to their rightful owners has had a lasting impression on today 's world.
While the Holocaust was taking place, something that went on that hasn’t been emphasized was the art that the Nazis stole from the peoples they made flee their homes. Art was something that was popular for Jews to have in their homes. Art usually doesn't sound like something we would connect to the Jews during and before the Holocaust. However, when you look at their job s and occupations, the Jews were in the field of art. For example, Dellheim explained how Jews had jobs that dealt with art like jewelers, the workers in furniture shops, or architects and etc. When the Jews were fleeing from the Nazis or when they were forced out of their homes, they were forced to leave their art. There was also a difficulty with storing art during this time.

Its power lies in its ability to capture and compel an audience nearly six decades after the modern world's "other" day of infamy. To understand fully the painting that evolved out of the Spanish painter's outrage, one must know its context. "Why do you think I date everything I do? Because it is not sufficient to know an artist's works--it is also necessary to know when he did them, why, under what circumstances" (Picasso). An appreciator who knows the saga of Spain's historical fishing village is given a depth of experience that only a genius like Picasso could portray --"it may well be the most terrifying document on the horrors of war ever to be produced by an artist" (Wertenbaker 126).
The German Expressionism movement started in the early twentieth century art world, pre-WWI, presumably from Vincent Van Gogh’s “pioneering expressionist paintings like… Starry, Starry Night”(Encyclopaedia of Art History). It was a purely aesthetic movement at this time that sought to oppose the Impressionist movement, which imitated nature, by imposing unnatural, distorted images. The Natural History Museum is extraordinary place to explore and learn. It’s fun and breathtaking. The museum served as an agricultural fairground from 1872 until 1910. The original structure of the building from the 1913 and today’s structure are combined with a blend of many styles. Like a Spanish Renaissance ornamentation in the terracotta trimmings. There is a Romanesque style in the arched windows and the brick walls. The Beaux-Arts tradition is a T-shape floor plan. The building measures 75 feet in diameter with three wings. The Rotunda’s walls are made of Italian marble and the floors have a mosaic tile. The statue in the center of the floor called “Three Muses.” The Rotunda’s dome is 58 feet high with a skylight 20 feet across on top, which has been restored recently into a bright colored stained glass design. The museum had its first grand opening on November 6, 1913 and was called “The Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science, and Art. It was opened formally to the public. The museum was joined by other major cultural facilities in the park; the Memorial Coliseum, Sports Arena, Swimming Stadium, California Science Center, California African American Museum and the largest Municipal-Owned Rose Garden in the nation, with a beautiful water fountain in the center.

In prehistoric times cave dwellers drew on the wall of caves to record history. In biblical times paintings recorded the life and death of Christ. Throughout time art has recorded history. Most art is created for a specific reason or purpose, it has a way of expressing ideas and beliefs, and it can record the experiences of all people.
