Navigational Tools
When designing a website, a web designer must develop and create an effective way of navigating his or her website. When doing this job, the web designer must keep the principle of compensation in mind. According to authors Killingsworth and Gilbertson “in every revision of a text, something is lost and something is gained” (45). Using this principle of compensation, a web designer must realize the consequences for choosing a picture, icon, or text to represent links on his or her web page. For each one there are advantages and drawbacks, which if weighed or balanced properly can enhance that web designer’s page. Human beings by nature are visually oriented; therefore, the web designer should find a satisfactory medium between the use and placement of either text or graphics. According to Brad Bachetti in his response “Creating a Roadmap”, “ If both text and graphics are used to represent the button, it is visually appealing to keep the text and graphics of equal width. This is exemplified on the main page of the WebCT course page” (Bachetti). If we take a look at the WebCT course page, we will find this to be true. The WebCT course page also exemplifies the principle of compensation. The pictures that accompany the text not only compliment each other in width and size, but also enhance each other. Together the pictures and text convey better meaning then they would if they stood alone, thus allowing for easy navigation on the course page.
Sometimes though a web designer may only want to use a picture, icon, or text to represent a link or navigational tool on a website. According to Principles of Web Design, by David and Jean Farkas, “Links must make clear their destinations the page that the link will display” (209). Using this simple principle put forth by the authors, a web designer may encounter problems when dealing with pictures and icons to represent links or navigational tools. According to Farkas, “to design links that will communicate their destination clearly, you need to think about your audience and their information needs” (Farkas 209). A picture and icon may have different connative or denotative meanings for people of a different age, gender, race, or nationality. That being stated icons and pictures have some significant advantages over text links. For example, a familiar one is processed faster, icons communicate across languages and cultures, they are visually interesting, and they often save space (Farkas 211).
Blanche Dubois provides as Williams’ core personage throughout ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. Her vulnerability in a changing society and monomania with her appearance, along with her mental fragility both cumulates pathos from the audience and draws in our attention. Furthermore, the contrast between a pure southern belle and a cheap seductress, as well as her relationship with Stanley, allows Williams to explore ideas relating to the patriarchal society of the time. As the play progresses and the audience observe Blanche endure an exigent predicament, we see her come forth as the conspicuous protagonist in the play and a victim of circumstance.
You can't really know a person just by what they look or dress like until one really takes the time to get to know them. A "Streetcar Named Desire" has quite a few key characters and colors, but Blanche and the color white are quite significant and seem to stick out a lot in the book. Tennessee Williams's play A Streetcar Named Desire contains more within it's characters, situations, and story than appears on its surface. Joseph Krutch, author of Twentieth Century Interpretations of A Streetcar Named Desire wrote, “The authors perceptions remain subtle and delicate… The final impression left is, surprisingly enough not of sensationalism but of subtlety” (38.) As in many of Williams's plays deeper meanings are understood only through close examination of each scene. The reader must ask him or herself as they go whether or not something might lend more than what lies on the surface.
In Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire,” paper lanterns, kitchen candles, and multicolored strobes reveal the various shades of reality surrounding Blanch DuBois. When Blanche visits her sister, Stella, and Stanley Kowalski’s modest apartment in New Orleans, tension regarding her mental stability immediately emerges. Blanche cloaks the apartment’s harsh light with a paper lantern, which initially suggests the fervency of her insecurity regarding physical beauty; however, this dim light eventually evolves to expose her unwillingness to embrace reality, one of Blanche’s principal character flaws that stems from the devastating suicide of her former husband. While recounting her husband’s tragedy, Blanche heavily relies on light imagery to accentuate the suicide’s influence on her existence. Towards the play’s conclusion, Mitch destroys the paper lantern and forces Blanche to candidly expose her deteriorated mentality, thus commencing Blanche’s downfall into hysteria. Blanche DuBois’ aversion to light, an element which epitomizes the concept of transparent reality, reveals her superficiality and exposes her capricious mentality, ultimately perpetuating the theme that willful deception leads to unstable reality.
The proliferation of graphic scores emerging in Europe and America from the mid-1950s has had a profound impact on musical thought, broadening links between performers and composers, audiences and art forms. Exploration of notational methods based on graphics flourished rapidly and diversely during the fifties and sixties, primarily as a trend amongst young radicals. So many composers producing scores of this kind used a personal vocabulary of symbols – often creating different notation systems for each work – that the effectiveness of their approaches in realising a sonic concept can be assessed only on a case-by-case basis. But the significance of early graphic scores does not depend entirely on how they sound; rather it lies in their capacity to accommodate or even to generate new forms, techniques and mediums, and to challenge notions of what constitutes a musical composition. In addition, these works demonstrate that notation can extend beyond instructional functionality to allow for prominent interpretive and aleatoric elements, and can harbour an intrinsic aesthetic value of its own, apparent before a single note is sounded.
The Play “A Streetcar Named Desire,” was written by Tennessee Williams in 1947. This is a tragedy that begins in 1947 in the French quarters of New Orleans after the tragic hero, Blanche Dubois, is forced to move from her family home of Belle Reve in Laurel, Mississippi due to a prolonged experience with poverty. Blanche suffers from a form of psychosis that makes it difficult for her to cope with reality. She often hears a music play when ignoring the truth of a past issue or something that does not fit the mold of what she sees as reality. She struggles with living with her sister and abusive brother-in-law, led her to progressively lose her understanding of reality. Her inability to bring her struggles to light due her past and Stanley always being forgiven for his transgressions bring to light the how unchecked desire can be a destructive force in society.
The author Tenesse Williams whom wrote "A Street Car Named Desire" uses colors to symbolize the characters in his story. The author also uses colors to symbolize certain objects in his story as well. The colors used for the two characters "Blanche" and "Stanley" in the story "A Street Car Named Desire" either fits the persons lifestyle, or contradicts their lifestyle. "Blanche Dubois" which we are told means white woods, her name reflects on the fact that she is always wearing the color white because she dresses as if she was rich to impress the men although she is poor and lives in the ghettos. "Stanley" who is is the second character in "A Street Car Named Desire" whom the author also uses the color blue to relate to Stanley's righteous character seen in the story. By using colors to symbolize characters, and objects he creates a better visual for the reader see in their own perception.
Despite the great lengths society has overcome in regards to gender inequality, social issues regarding the difference between men and women still exist. Women in today’s society still continually earn less than men in almost every single occupation. Women were given the right to vote in 1919, yet in 2016 they still have not achieved full equality in comparison to their male counterparts. Gender equality related to equal pay is concerning not only in my own community, but the entire nation.
Throughout the history of the world, discrimination in all forms has been a constant struggle, whether it is race, gender, religion, appearance or anything else that makes one person different from another, it is happening every day. One significant discrimination problem that is affecting many women takes place in the work place. As of recently the gender wage gap has become a major topic for discussion. The gender wage gap is the average difference between men and women aggregated hourly earnings. Women who are equally trained and educated, and with the same experience are getting paid way less than men. In 2015, female full time workers earned eighty cents for every dollar earned by men.

Tennessee Williams wrote A Streetcar Named Desire to set place in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1947. The play shows how desire can control and affect someone’s life. What one desire is different from others people’s desires. In the play, desire affects Stanley and Blanche lives differently. Their desires causes them to dislike and crash against each other. Other characters in the play are affected by desire but is shown more in Stanley and Blanche lives. Stanley demonstrates his desire of being the one in control while Blanche is trying to live in fantasy to get away from her past and seem to have a better life.
In “A Streetcar Named Desire” Tennessee Williams portrays memories, secrets, and relationships. In the book it showed memories of two girls living on a plantation. Also a lot of secrets too, as in Blanche hiding her face trying to keep her age in secret. Finally, it showed the many relationships such as Stella and Stanley. The design of the Web site is very bright and appealing to the eye. Its layout is inviting and easy to navigate. Its design is consistent through all pages.
